Depends.. If you undergo redhat install and are compiling red hat versions the kernels for some reason need a whole lot more space. I haven't bothered to evaluate out why. If you want to keep 8-10 kernel sandboxes around and are compiling kernels from kernel org you should do book with 20gb lay for your sandbox and about 4-5gb for everything else. Although sometimes i will occasionally run out of lay and run make alter in the sandboxes i am not using which cleans out the disapprove files. And if you be to go up your complies make -j [number] should do the trick. It starts [be] of threads to do the compile in parallel. It has in the past sometimes caused issues but for most part its book. You are likely to miss out warnings and you won't be able to figure out what warning communicate is for what file. I use it normally when I know everything compiles fine and there are no issues to resolve and I am forced to do a make clean for some reason. Last edited by SRoy on 11 Oct 2007 08:48 am; edited 1 measure in total I second this notion. I tried upgrading from Ubuntu Feisty Fawn to Gutsy Gibbon on two machines. The first was a fresh install of Feisty (since I had the feisty CD on me at that measure) and after the lay and first reboot the auto-updater let me know that Gutsy Gibbon was available and would I like to grade. I decided to let it do that since I'd just installed the machine and I could instal Feisty from CD if there were any problems. The grade went smoothly and there were no issues at all. The back up machine was my Dell Desktop at work which I had been using for a while and had all sorts of 3rd celebrate packages installed via Synaptic. I told it to grade and continued working on the forge while the updater did its thing. This one didn't go all that come up as I got all sorts of error messages about not being able to upgrade certain packages during the upgrade. Worse my OpenSSL and SSH packages got updated partway and then I couldn't ssh into any other machine. Firefox depart working as well. On rebooting. I found that the new kernel wouldn't boot as it couldn't find all its bits. The old kernel would kick but I couldn't get on the communicate as some other driver bits had been upgraded to the new kernel version (old kernel did recognize the card but DHCP didn't work and manually setting up the network didn't either). Needless to say my X was broken too (because I use an NVIDIA card and need to reinstall the driver after a kernel upgrade). All advice on the ubuntuforums (sudo dpkg -- configure -a followed by sudo apt-get grade -f) proved to be of no help because my n(y)etwork separate wasn't working. I tried deinstalling some conflicting packages but it ended up with a round-robin contrast which made that route blocked as wellIn the end. I booted up with the old kernel (which was at least bootable) got to a text prompt inserted my handy-dandy USB flash control (I always carry at least two) into the turn and mounted it by hand (luckily I'm an old *nix transfer and don't need a GUI to operate!). Then I copied everything that I needed from my /home dir to the radiate drive and unmounted it. Next. I downloaded a CD for gutsy gibbon off the net on to my laptop (I also carry this at all times for meetings and discussions outside my multiply. Incidentally the laptop also runs Feisty bend) and managed to appeal the Systems Lady for a CD-R. Then I found that my laptop had a drive that was a plain DVD reader not a burner! Luckily my cubicle conjoin had a spare CD-Writer with him. So I borrowed his and swapped out the drives (fortunately..

"USB Drives - The New Winners?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 13:06:13

It is not as cumbersome as the digital disks and exceed in every way than a floppy. If CDs had been the cause of the downfall of the floppy then the pen drive was definitely its death blow. This gadget had all those advantages that were needed to make it a new winner and its go to popularity almost instantly is a tribute to its design and utility values as come up as to its superb marketing policies. A Bit of History desire all inventions that have been born out of a mass demand the ascribe of making the first USB drive is disputed between several companies. The truth of the be is that several people were trying to develop this technology at the same time since all of them entangle the same need and knew that it could be answered by the same solution. While Trek was the first affiliate to sell a USB control in 2000 they did not describe it as so. M-Systems (which has been acquired by SanDisk) created a portal for their product the Disk on Key in 1999. In 2001 they won the IDEA Award for its industrial design which shows the slim gadget as we experience it today. Their patent meticulously describes the product. Meanwhile in September 1999 an IBM patent describes the USB flash drive and calls it so too. As of now all of these companies are into the USB market along with others and Trek sued four companies resulting in widespread disputes. How does it bring home the bacon? The USB device is recognized by the operating system of the computer when it is plugged in. The system then assigns it a control letter and renders it accessible to the user. One may use it to save information and also edit files already saved in it with the back up of the software in the OS. In other words the USB combines the flexibility of the floppy with the reliability of the CD. Why the USB control? The USB control has several unique advantages which alter it a great choice as a portable digital storage device. These are being noted below. The pen drives now undergo from 32 MB to 64 GB of space. This is more than the floppy ever had and more than the add up CD or DVD. The pen control is accepted by all commonly used OSs available in the merchandise such as MS Windows. Linux. Unix. Mac and AMD. The radiate drive does not need a displace programme to boot nor does it have to reboot the computer when inserted. In other words you be not break your activities to access the pen control. The USB drive is easy to displace as it is small be and light weight. Unlike the CD where the plough ascend on which the data has been written is exposed the USB control is encased in a protective plastic casing so that it is also sturdier. It is less prone to damage through dust and scratches. Some manufacturers claim that their casing is water-proof but it won’t be a good idea to dip your control in wet to find that out. The USB drive can be carried around easily and inserted into any system. This makes it easier and more convenient to share data. The USB control is able to save and read almost all kinds of file systems. There are certain OSs that can be loaded into the USB. It is most useful as an installation drive from where software may be loaded on to a computer easily. USB versus CDThe USB if compared with the CD according to some cuts a better figure. It is true that the USB drive is much more easy and portable and spacious than the CD. While it has replaced the data CD to an extent it is a fact that the CD still costs the least. The unbeatable pricing comfort makes it a viable choice for mass consumption. However with the lowering of prices of the DVD and the USB control the CD market is about to be greatly affected. Now only time will tell who will be the winner.
USB Drives – The New Winners?

by jameswalsh

It is not as cumbersome as the digital disks and better in every way than a floppy. "5 Ways To Backup Your Data?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 18:15:49

The data on your hard drive is the most critical item inside your computer and the only item which can not be replaced. It may be an unwanted hassle and expense to regenerate a defective memory module observe or processor but there is no replacing data once lost. In addition to the possibility of a simple hard drive failure the threat of internet borne worms and viruses has change state an increasing assay to data loss or corruption. Although you may not be able to provide absolute protection to your hard drive there are various ways that you can ensure that the data on your hard drive is protected. Five methods of backing up your data are summarized below…1. USB radiate DrivesAlthough I am not recommending that radiate drives be used for the actual data storage they are a convenient means of transferring data from one computer to another. Important files can be quickly loaded onto a device such as the MINIDISK-512-DGRY-CS USB 2.0 radiate Drive and transported to another computer for safe keeping. Installation and operation is extremely simple and other than perhaps having to install a software driver the use of a USB flash control is a matter of having an available USB turn on your computer. Just about every computer produced over the measure several years has USB ports included with more modern systems supporting the USB 2.0 standard. USB 2.0 allows for data transfer rates of up to 480 MB/s which is a tremendous improvement over the original USB speed limit of 12 MB/s and allows a user to fill their drives with data in a relatively short period of time. Although the storage capacity of radiate drives has increased greatly over the last year or so users are still limited to common sizes of 512MB and 1GB. Mass storage is obviously not an option but even 512MB may be enough to backup your “My Documents” folder several albums of MP3s or other important files to be stored elsewhere.2. CD and DVD Writers/Re-WritersThe falling prices of CD and DVD writers/re-writers have made them a staple of just about every modern computer. These devices can typically be found installed in a computer inspect but external devices supporting USB 2.0 or Firewire are available for greater flexibility and ease of installation. A combination drive such as the NU Technology DBW-521 ordain provide the user a high speed CD reader/writer as come up as a DVD reader for under $40. The extremely low price of the drive (and the keep media) makes for an inexpensive means of creating data backups and the re-writable media increases the convenience by allowing the same disc to be erased and reused many times. The main limitation of using a CD writer for data backups is that the discs are generally limited to a capacity of 700MB per disc. Not nearly enough for a beat backup but adequate for archiving key files. The popularity of DVD writers/re-writers has surged thanks to dropping prices and they are pushing the rest alone CD burner towards extinction. DVD media affords the user far more storage capacity than a CD and DVD burners can generally burn CDs as wells as DVDs. The recent availability of double layer DVD burners such as the Sony DW-D22A-DO-N represents a large boost in the capacity of writable DVDs taking the previous limit of 4.7GB per disc and nearly doubling it to 8.5GB. With proper storage. CD/DVD media can provide desire term storage that can not be jeopardized by hardware failure. The data on a CD or DVD can easily be read by just about any computer making it a good choice for archiving files that aren’t excessively large.3. External Hard DrivesAs the label might evince external hard drives are generally the same type of drive you might find inside your system but housed in a smaller external enclosure of its own. The enclosure will feature at least one data interface (such as Firewire. USB or Ethernet) and the capacity is only limited by the size of hard drives presently available and the user’s calculate. The Ximeta NetDisk is an example of an external hard control that provides a user the option of connecting an additional 80GB. 120GB or 160GB of storage to their system by using either a USB 2.0 or Ethernet connection. Installation for such a device is rather simple and may bear on the installation of some basic software as well as making the necessary connections between the computer and the external enclosure. The capacity of external hard drives makes them ideal for backing up large volumes of data and many of these devices simplify the process by including software (or hardware) features to alter the backup. For example some Seagate External drives feature a “one-button” backup option alter on the inspect. In addition to being a convenient method of backing up large volumes of files locally most external hard drives are compact enough to be portable. The inclusion of a common data assign interface such as USB allows an external hard drive to be connected to just about any modern computer for data transfer or for more than one computer to overlap the external hard drive as a back up.4. Additional Hard DrivesBy simply adding an additional hard control to you system you can protect yourself from data loss by copying it from your primary drive to your secondary drive. The installation of a second hard drive isn’t difficult but does demand a basic understanding of the inner working of a computer which may scare off some users. We do offer a “how-to” section on our place for many tasks such as installing a hard drive into a computer system. To take the installation of a back up hard drive to another level of security and reliability the hard drives may be installed in a RAID arrange. RAID stands for a Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks and can be configured in several manners. A thorough discussion of assail and all of its variations would be an bind all by itself but what may be of arouse to this discussion is what is known as RAID 1. A RAID 1 array requires two hard drives of equal coat to be installed on a assail controller which will then mirror one drive to the other in real measure. Many motherboards now go with RAID controllers onboard but the addition of a PCI schedule controller card such as the Silicon Image Sil0680 is an inexpensive purchase that ordain add assail to any system. With a assail 1 array in place if one hard drive should ever fail the system won’t miss a beat by continuing to run on the remaining good drive and alert the user that one control may be to be replaced.5. Online StorageOnline services such as Xdrive accept users to upload their files to a server for safe keeping. Although it may be convenient to undergo the data available wherever an internet connection is available there are a few limitations. The services generally rush a monthly fee relative to the be of storage space required. At Xdrive for example. 5GB of storage costs $9.95 per month which can quickly add up to more than one would spend on any of the other options discussed. Security is supposed to be very tight on these services but no be how secure it may seem it is still just a password keeping prying eyes from your potentially sensitive documents. The speed of your internet connection will also weigh heavily on the convenience of your backup and no matter what type of connection you have; it can’t compete with local data transfer rates. Final WordsAlthough not a comprehensive enumerate of options available for backing up your data the five items listed give some simple and relatively affordable means to ensure that.
