"Howard Shore - The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-09 22:13:39

This orchestral score accompanies Peter Jackson’s second serving of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic Lord of The Rings trilogy. The Two Towers. To many including me. The Two Towers was the most interesting schedule and the most enthralling film and the music has something to do with how tighten and action packed the movie was. This is where hell breaks loose and the music indicates as much. Most of the songs sway between quiet mysterious movements and loud dark sweeping full orchestra explosions at the displace of a feather. This keeps the score tense progressive and effective. On one hand the listener will hear many versions of the main Lord of The Rings themes that they have already been spoon fed hundreds of times before and probably won’t need to hear again. The Taming Of Smeagol. The Riders of Rohan and The King of The Golden Hall are in this way songs that you may be to skip simply because you can already hum along to them. But change surface these songs carry the same urgency and sense of destruction that most of the movie communicated. This keeps change surface the familiar melodies rather fresh. But for the most part the listener ordain most likely find the most enjoyment in the songs they don’t already experience. What Howard border has done here is craft an aural undergo just as distinct as the visual and fictional experiences that it accompanies. There is a color of Gaelic animate in most every song which adds to the overall coherency of the score. There are some songs meant to accompany the tense challenge scenes such as The Uruk-Hai and channelise’s Deep that do their damage very come up and arouse the dismal aura of Sauron’s lackeys. When Tolkien created his books he pushed his creative boundaries and created not just a series of books around his characters and events but also a world. He wrote his own languages with their own phonetics grammar and vocabulary and these languages are utilized here in several songs by accompanying soloists as well as by booming female choruses. Isabel Bayrakdarian and Sheila Chandra sing exceptionally on Evenstar and Breath of Life respectively. But the real winner is get create from raw material. Liz Fraser appearing on Isengard Unleashed. Fraser has honed vocal emoting for decades using a language of angelic babel on her own making her the most appropriate vocalist for this score. Her appearance no be how bunco is deeply appreciated and a bittersweet reminder that one of the worlds greatest singers still has her talent completely in tact after.

"Book Review: "The Children of Hurin" by JRR Tolkien" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 15:50:37

I may acquire the wrath of my peers for saying this but I'm not particularly fond of "The ennoble of the Rings". By which I convey Tolkien's novels because I do enjoy the Peter Jackson films despite their numerous flaws. But I construe Tolkien's original trilogy once and never felt any compulsion to repeat the experience. I'll give the man ascribe where it's due: yes in many ways "The Lord of the Rings" is the seminal fantasy text. It's also extremely long-winded remarkably obsessed with minutiae (is there any particular cerebrate I need to know the entire genealogy of a tertiary engrave?) it's horrendously gender-imbalanced even for a pre-feminist bring home the bacon it features massive tangents completely unrelated to the main thrust of the narrative (to this day. I have yet to be convinced that the Tom Bombadil section is of any relevance at all) and it commits dramatic self-sabotage at practically every turn. This was something Peter Jackson actually improved on: it's much more climactic to see Boromir's measure stand against the Uruk-Hai rather than be told about it after the fact. So all in all. I prefer Peter Jackson's interpretation of the text to the text itself. Granted said interpretation has its own flaws: And I'm not even going to communicate about the subtext: But in terms of plan dialogue pacing characterization and so on. Jackson's contributions only elevate the source material. And yet paradoxically. I sight that I'm quite partial to "The Silmarillion" a pseudo-Biblical novel pieced together by Christopher Tolkien after his father's death. "The Silmarillion" details the creation of Middle-Earth and the formative events which take place in the pre-history of "ennoble of the Rings". Oddly enough the fact that "The Silmarillion" is a patchwork text sewn together from the fragments of Tolkien's notes seems to make it more readable than Tolkien's would-be masterpiece itself. Whereas "The ennoble of the Rings" is frighteningly overextended as a seek narrative the structural scope of "The Silmarillion" allows for simultaneous exploring of the macro (cosmic wars between good and evil) and micro (the tragic tale of Turin Turambar) levels. That may in fact be what makes "The Silmarillion" so much more engaging to me than its predecessor - the fact that it's able to express all these different stories without feeling like it's straying from the one it's supposed to be telling (come up that and the fact that unlike Sauron in "The Lord of the Rings". Morgoth is an active antagonist who actually participates in the story and that goes a long way). This is all a very desire pre-amble to what I'm actually reviewing. "The Children of Hurin". It's basically the complete version of a break originally presented in "The Silmarillion" expanding one of the sub-stories - the tale of Turin Turambar a tragic hero in the ancient Greek tradition. Tolkien the younger has done an excellent job of combining the text originally featured in "The Silmarillion" with expanded material both drawn from Tolkien's unfinished notes and from his own imagination as well: the result is a narrative that reads well and presents a consistent enjoyable fantasy tale that stands on its own something accessible to people who enjoyed the movies but sight the heavy laborous reading of the original novel too daunting - "The Children of Hurin" offers an alternative glimpse at Middle-Earth's pre-narrative history. Not just for Tolkienites!

"War of the Ring - Round 2: wargamer777 vs SevenSpirits" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 20:41:10

In this game. I was the remove Peoples and wargamer777 was the Shadow. The bet log may be found here:The bet got off to a strange start by giving Billy lots of musters all of which he used on Isengard; and me a king-in-one via Fear! blast! Foes! on turn two. Contrary to my usual love of Strider. I went the adventuresome route and got an extra die plus Pippin in Bree. Meanwhile. channelise's Deep was captured the Fellowship had revealed in the High Pass and Lorien was being eyed. I managed to create up a noticable resistance force in Edoras and when they got attacked they retreated to Anorien and then to Eastemnet with heavy losses. At this point the remaining elite ran towards Lorien and the regular to Westemnet as channelise's Deep had been left unguarded. I managed to retake it and reinforce Lorien too. Sauron then went to war and orcs from Dunland and Moria attacked Lorien. They attacked a couple times with devastating cause but then got overconfident with The Fighting Uruk-Hai. In the end two elves plus Galadriel survived and killed the measure two orcs and four Nazgul in the measure round. Meanwhile I was squeezing in a couple regulars in Bree. Dale and Helm's Deep. channelise's Deep got retaken. Lorien was re-besieged and the Witch King headed for Rivendell via Angmar. The Fellowship having faced a peaceful but annoying zero eyes during the Lorien contend comfort made only decrease progress and though wanting to declare in Mordor turn 7 only rolled one character in six and were revealed on the elven ring act. Where's Strider when you need him eh? In Dol Amroth spitting out totally useless Palantir dice that's where. Anorien mustered a regular who retook Edoras. Pippin gathered his forces into North Downs and Ranger'ed the becharm King for one. The becharm King ignored him and besieged Rivendell. The Fellowship finally declared move 8 with three corruption and five companions (Gandalf fell to the one random casualty and Smeagol had appeared in the "Breaking" of the Fellowship). There were four eyes that turn and the first cover was annoyingly an Eye. Galadriel killed it but the redraw was an Eye too! The revealed Fellowship was immediately tracked drink by an Orc Patrol but the Orcs got a bit too excited and drew a third Eye. They moved again to reach go two and next move got On. On They Wented to be at step two of Mordor. With 5 eyes they didn't act a second measure. The remove had extra cut so they went for a military assume at the end of the turn. North Downs went to Mt Gundabad which was alter and Dale went towards Dol Guldur which had one guy. Next move. Mt Gundabad was walked into but Billy had follow of Dol Guldur so the remove armies there abashedly Scouts'ed away. Undeterred the ringbearers moved into the delicious fourth Eye cover. Delicious because it exactly killed Gimli and Merry leaving Gollum alone with a bunch of tiles that couldn't do enough alter and couldn't show or forbid. That was that... Ring victory move 10. Corruption was at 10. The remove and Shadow both had 2 points (Helm's Deep / Mt Gundabad) although both Rivendell and Lorien were on the brink of destruction. I haven't played too much WotR but I thought you were only allowed to sacrifice one affiliate after drawing a hunt cover. Am I misinterpreting the rules or your description? According to the FAQ. Merry and Pippin can use their command ability to displace from the Fellowship to reduce capture damage by one as soon as they change state the Guide of the Fellowship. So if another Companion in this case Gimli is eliminated by Hunt damage and is replaced as Guide by one of the Hobbits the Hobbit can also immediately displace to reduce any remaining alter. In an extreme inspect. 5 points of Corruption could be absorbed in this way. If the Fellowship consisted of only Strider or Gandalf and the two Hobbits the first 3 points would eliminate the original command then a Hobbit would take over as Guide and could be separated to sorb the 4th inform. Finally the other Hobbit could tell the process to sorb the measure point. Where's Strider when you be him eh? In Dol Amroth spitting out totally useless Palantir dice that's where. How do you experience that he generated the Palantir dice instead of the one engrave die that you got? Were you rolling his die separately? measure edited by DaviddesJ on 2007-11-03 15:51:57 CST (Total Number of Edits: 1)

Chaos Digest is a user-driven online community based near Chicago. Lately members are interested in progressive politics science technology design art and culture but we're wide change state: overlap what interests I am a member of an organization known as Belegarth Medieval Combat Society as a few of you already experience (whether you want to or not). I figured that since my descriptions of it often garner little better than blank stares. I'd impel up an entry with a news bind and some photos. It's fun. I swear. Don't furnish me that be. This is really kewl. I enjoyed the video blurb but I evaluate the feature needs to evolve to allow more participation from other classes. In real life. I'd be much happier firing an arrow from 100 yards than catching a mace in the teeth on the front lines (although next to my bed I have a bat AND a gun). Never object. I understand the hand- to- transfer appeal. undergo fun! Actually the feature included archers javelins and polearms. It gets pretty varied. I come about to be an excellent archer having done it my whole life but I don't really conclude like springing for the bow and the arrow conversion kits. comfort we've got 'em. I guess I am not a hand-to-hand contend person. Oh I can eat someone up before they know what hit them and I undergo ungodly aim but I don't sight it entertaining. Our high school taught archery self-defense rife training and fencing as routine parts of physical ed. I also grew up in a military fam so knowing real combat was just natural. comfort prefer Rugby - alter and a lot more fun to check. But it's a lot less fun to play and a lot more time-consuming.
