Questions are again being levelled at the adequacy of the AFL's illicit drugs policy after former West Coast Eagles star Ben Cousins faced charges of bringing the game into disrepute. Ben Cousins has never tested positive to illicit drugs but he was sacked by the Eagles because of his alleged drug use. Cousins did not have to front the AFL Commission on Monday but he opted to do so evading the media pack by slipping in to AFL House via a back door. The charge of bringing the game into disrepute comes after a tumultuous 12 months for the former Brownlow medallist who was sacked by his club after he was arrested and charged with two drug related offences in Perth. West Australian police eventually dropped the charges and apologised to Ben Cousins. He flew to Los Angeles for drug treatment but instead went missing. It is alleged he was hospitalised after a five-day bender using cocaine. In the end Ben Cousins spent just a day-and-a-half at the Californian drug treatment centre before flying home to face the AFL's charge. His lawyer Shane Brennan has threatened to sue the Eagles. Despite all the headlines it is understood Cousins has never tested positive to drug use but he now faces fines and a possible suspension. Former Fremantle Dockers coach says what has happened to Cousins reflects badly on him. West Coast and the AFL describing the situation as "farcical". "Ben has not been caught has not tested positive under the AFL drug testing regime so that's been a little bit farcical," he said. "There's no doubt that Ben has been has a serious problem with illicit drugs and that he has been unable to shake that to the degree that we all want him to." Earlier this year two players from another AFL club tested positive to illicit drugs use twice. They can not be named and neither can their club under the AFL's drugs policy. Technically their club does not know either - under the AFL's policy a club is not informed until a player tests positive three times. It turns out the club does know who the players are and so does the media after Channel Seven obtained the players confidential medical records. The names of the players and the club have been suppressed. "I'm just hoping that the Federal Government can get into the AFL to insist that they go ahead with a two-strike policy and be much more overt in the instances where people test positive in the first instance," he said. The Federal Government has also criticised the AFL's policy as being too soft on illicit drugs use. It says the AFL should adopt the NRL's two strikes policy. In the NRL a player receives a suspended fine worth 5 per cent of their annual salary for their first offence. The player is then named after a second offence and an automatic 12-month suspension is imposed. The NRL will conduct 3000 drug tests each year compared to the AFL's 500 tests. An NRL player on average can expect to be tested seven times compared to an AFL player who risks being tested on average less than once a year. Former Essendon great Kevin Sheedy is calling for a national drugs summit involving every sporting body in the country. He says the time has come to admit Australian sport does not have the answers when it comes to combating illicit and performance enhancing drugs. Drum agrees saying the issue needs to be brought out into the open with a view to bedding down a uniform approach. "We need to be very very open and transparent and we need to put in place policy going forward which is going to help the young people of tomorrow," he said. Drum says it has taken a long time for the AFL to deal with illicit drugs and while the signs are positive there is still a lot of work yet to be done. "I think early on there's no doubt that they had their head in the sand on this issue there's no doubt about that," he said. "I think in later stages the AFL have acknowledged that they have got to act with a little bit authority and I would think that over the last month they have in fact done that."
