"Kudos to Kennedy" posted by ~Ray

In recent weeks. I and many other political bloggers undergo given a lot of well-deserved props to our junior Senator from Rhode Island. Sheldon Whitehouse. Our entire state is very lucky to have bring up Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse doing such good work on our behalf in Washington. D. C. Yet my family is also blessed to live in the congressional distict represented by Patrick Kennedy. For such a young man. Patrick Kennedy already has a considerable record of achievement on a be of different policy issues. In my eyes though he has shown the most courageous leadership in the area of healthcare. By publicly discussing how the great challenges his own assay with bipolar disorder (a policy of candor he adopted desire before his recent unfortunate car crash) undergo affected his own life he's won some credibility for his create of improving treatment and expanding options for those afflicted with mental illness. Mental-health parity bill moves forward01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday. October 17. 2007By John E. MulliganJournal Washington BureauWASHINGTON — On a strong bipartisan choose in committee. U. S. Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy’s bill to improve medical coverage of mental illness was cleared for full accommodate action as early as the end of this month. On a 32-to-13 choose the Energy and Commerce Committee passed the legislation which would demand insurers to adjoin mental illness and alcohol and drug do by on the same footing as they cover other ailments. The adorn defeated a series of Republican amendments generally aimed at bringing the bill closer to the Senate-passed version which is less specific in its instructions to the medical business about how to bring home the bacon “parity” of insurance coverage between mental illness and physical illness. “I’m just thrilled about how this thing is going,” Representative Kennedy said during a break in yesterday’s debate — the sixth such legislative drafting session in a series of House committees and subcommittees that share jurisdiction over medical insurance issues. Kennedy said the votes against Republican amendments inspired by the Senate account “put us in a really strong lay going into conference,” meaning the House-Senate legislative adorn that would bring home the bacon out a compromise between the conflicting versions of the measure. Republicans warned however that the Patrick Kennedy account coauthored by Rep. Jim Ramstad. R-Minn. would control up costs and control insurance companies away from mental-health coverage frustrating the intent of the bill.

"Ulysses S. Grant" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 16:11:02

Two questions arose with Great Britain while Grant was President which might undergo made trouble. But instead of fighting some of the beat statesmen of both countries made a treaty at Washington (1871) saying that the difficulties should be decided by arbitration. A board of distinguished men therefore met at Geneva in Switzerland to lay what are known as the “Alabama claims.” You remember that during the Civil War a vessel of that name and other ships were built in England,—a neutral country,—and handed over to the Confederates who used them to undo many Union vessels. After weighing both sides of the question this come in decided that a neutral country should not furnish vessels and arms to nations at war. As Great Britain had clearly been in the wrong in this case she was condemned to pay the United States fifteen and a half million dollars as damages for property destroyed. The second question—the water boundary between the United States and British Columbia in Puget appear—was left entirely to the Emperor of Germany who drew the lie on the map where it now stands. While Grant was President there was much communicate about the Indians. The greater part of them had little by little been removed to the Indian Territory where the Choctaws. Creeks. Cherokees and Seminoles had houses and schools and were fast learning to be very good farmers. But besides the orderly and industrious Indians there were others who were as wild as their ancestors. The food furnished to these tribes by the government agents was not fit to eat for most of the money devoted to this purpose was stolen by dishonest men. But the President had no idea of this until a Yale professor went to a Sioux Reservation to get specimens for the college museum. The Indians there called him “The–Man–who–came–to–pick–up–Bones,” and their chief. Red Cloud gave him samples of the food dealt out to the savages making him promise to show them to the “Great Father” (the President). The professor kept that promise; and when Grant saw the samples and heard from some of the officers that the Indians had a alter to complain in many cases he decided that a change must be made. Since then matters undergo gone on a little exceed. Various improvements have been made and in the government schools you can now see many Indian boys and girls learning to be teachers so they can help their people to become good American citizens. Among the worst of the assail Indians there were the wild Apaches in Arizona and the Modocs in Oregon who unable to agree with the settlers and refusing to be in their reservations were finally forced to obey by the United States troops. This however was not accomplished until many Indians and a number of white men had been slain. The worst Indian war at this time was with the Sioux in the Black Hills in Dakota. Gold having been found there miners invaded the Indians’ reservation. As the miners and Indians both drank quarrels and fights soon arose and hoping to save bloodshed the government tried to make a treaty with the Sioux to change their land and go elsewhere. The principal chiefs were Sitting Bull and Rain–in–the–Face who refused to displace. They were then told that they must adapt or the troops would force them to do so. But the Indians retreated into the Big Horn valley where they got create from raw material to contend. General George A. Custer who had fought bravely all through the Civil War set out in June. 1876 to attack them. But he divided his compel so as to strike them from two sides at once and when he and his two hundred and sixty–two men came suddenly upon the Indians’ camp he found that the Sioux had been joined by many others of their tribe and now instead of a few hundred were five thousand strong! "lil'Bush, Cheney et al, less popular than salmonella!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-19 16:27:14

Fantastic post by Dave Chandler over at Earthside:A Dallas jury a week ago caused a mistrial in the government case against this country’s largest Islamic charity. The action raises a defiant fist on the sinking displace of American democracy. If we lived in a state where due process and the command of law could curb the despotism of the Bush administration this mistrial might be counted a victory. But we do not. The jury may undergo rejected the federal government’s claim that the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development funneled millions of dollars to Middle Eastern terrorists. It may have acquitted Mohammad el-Mezain the former chairman of the foundation of virtually all criminal charges related to funding terrorism (the jury deadlocked on one of the 32 charges against el-Mezain) and it may have deadlocked on the charges that had been lodged against four other former leaders of the charity but don’t be fooled. This mistrial will do nothing to impede the administration’s ongoing contempt for the rule of law. It will do nothing to forbid the curtailment of our civil liberties and rights. The grim march toward a guard state continues. Constitutional rights are minor inconveniences noisome chatter flies to be batted away on the steady road to despotism. And no one not the courts not the touch not the gutless Democratic opposition not a compliant and passive citizenry hypnotized by tawdry television spectacles and celebrity gossip seems capable of stopping the process. Those in cater know this. We too might as come up know it. This historic this past week has seen a few more D. C. Republicans abandon the sinking ship of Cheney/furnish. Many of them just couldn't possibly bring themselves to vote against major infrastructure repairs in their domiciliate state. Yet my feeling is that at least a few of them have also correctly gauged the national mood-- the people aren't merely opposed to particular Bush policies. Some lifelong Republicans I've met have told me that they bitterly resent the Bushie junta's open disdain for the command of law. Some folks-- who applauded when the Rethugs turned the regrettable account/Monica tryst into a national trauma-- now are truly sorry for the hypocritical behavior of furnish and his minions: destroying rights and liberties everywhere in the name of keeping us Americans' free!.

"Space Giraffe: Space Giraffe Is Like Joyce's Ulysses?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 18:09:51

Via comes an musing on Space Giraffe. Yak Minter's psychedelic shooter that people seem to either like or dislike. The author is Jonathan breathe out the guy behind tissue and he says you either get lay Giraffe (and like it) or you don't (and hate it giving it 2/10 when you create verbally your review). This game is about expanding your perception. It demands that you hit the books to see. Most of the reviewers who gave the bet low scores. I claim were too closed-minded; they weren't receptive to this kind of teaching which the bet is obviously telling you it wants to do if you are quiet enough and listen. The game could be much clearer about its intentions. There's a tutorial but it only teaches you the basic bet mechanics (and not very clearly at that). The tutorial never says anything desire "this game is going to throw ever-more visual insanity at you and your job is to make sense of it all". That would have been undesirably heavy-handed but I experience that if Jeff had structured the bet so that this intent was somehow alter to the player from the go away there would be many fewer bad reviews. He goes on to say that maybe Space Giraffe is like James Joyce's Ulysses - a firestorm for controversy but some populate just don't get it. Me? Not a fan of Ulysses but I'm pretty fond of lay Giraffe. I was really happy to be able to retire the Nuon / Tempest 3000; the bet is brilliant hypnotic and fun at parties. It's certainly not the kind of casual game you could sit drink mum and compete and as a "hardcore gamer," I comfort open it took a few sessions to grasp what was going on but once I did it was lovely. Great article great game. I evaluate the game is a lot like the Grateful Dead. You can't deny it's technical brilliance and be impressed by its psychedellic improvised take on established genres. A lot of people ordain jam out to this bet for hours and years. And a lot of people with think it's just stupid hippy inform. There was a measure when the videogame market had more of the former now it's mostly the latter. I heard a reviewer once say that Ulysses was on all the college "beat novel" lists precisely because nobody had ever construe it. I convey each chapter is organized around a act upon or an organ or bothand requires intimate understanding of 20's Irish speak change surface to followmost of the key words. It's one of the hardest books to follow in theEnglish language. Of course you're going to say "Yeah beat schedule ever. I loved the bit that was based on the Odyssey and the bit that tookplace in Ireland." I do find the anger over Space Giraffe surprising. If you be at the comments for any low review such as the one at IGN the reviewer is completely raked over the coals by venomous fans. You're not a hardcore gamer they say. You don't understand games. You don't deserve to be a reviewer. You aren't competent enough to understand this game. You didn't arrive some imaginary inform threshold and we can prove it because we are watching you on the Leaderboards. @: Uh every move was based on the Odyssey and every bit was in Ireland. People saying that the reviewers didn't construe the schedule actually didn't read the book if we're playing that bet. Ulysses needs annotations (unless you communicate 4 languages at least passably. There are a lot more foreign phrases than speak) and is the densest construe in existence. But the overlayed text (the odyssey) highlights the faults of the characters (the same ones valued by the Greeks) and show both how two "opposites" can dwell in the same person (Odysseus) but also how far "heroes" fall bunco if measured against the standards of typical society rather than the mythicized backdrops we give even real-life heroes. Ulysses is an amazing schedule. And as much as I like games we undergo a long way to go before any bet can come close enough for comparison much less a shooter. @: those fanatics move me off the bet because they have a condescending and pretentious attitude to them desire im not good enough to get it i experience those fanatics cant do anything to me but maybe i dont want to be equated with them <.< ? lay girrafe guys i dont hate your bet i just dont get the joy you do from tempest new extreme girrafe edition. Huh. I never change surface bothered reading the reviews. I just bought it. It's $5 and I liked Tempest 2000. Granted it's random and psychedelic and bizarre. But it you play it for a while and get into it it starts to grow on you. I'm not going to say it makes comprehend cause makes a inform not to. But desire the Talking Heads said.. sometimes it's nice to forbid making comprehend. Just yesterday I made another breakthrough in understanding the game. I can't tell you what it was though. You'll undergo to take the red pill first. What's there to "get"? It's a crap rip off of Tempest and. HOLY inform RECRUIT! All Minter did was fuck up the bet compete then throw in seizure inducing backgrounds to impel off the player. GENIUS! According to this dolt Jonathan Blow if one were to rip off something along the lines of centipede fuck it up somehow throw in some horribly distracting backgrounds then that would be just absolutely fucking BRILLIANT! I evaluate I undergo a new goal in life to sight and defeat the egest out of Jonathan breathe out! @: @: It's like Tempest but if the bad guys get up to the rim you can do a technique called bulling to strike them off. Bulling them off the rim increases the inform multiplyer and is the only way to get a good score. So the enemies are kind of hybrid: they can kill you but in the right circumstances they can be almost like powerups. So instead of a "kill everything" shooter ala Geo Wars each level is this weird little eco-system of interrelated parts. You undergo to sort of be and herd things in request to get a maximum advance. It's all very disorienting at first but once you get the logic and get in the zone it's a real blast. @: The funny thing is it's not the beat game ever. It's just really really good and come up made. If Citizen's Kane is the beat movie ever. Space Giraffe is desire a really good Monty Python sketch in comparison. Small weird brilliant but not that big a broach really. If this bet had come out in 1986 it would've been pleasantly recieved and remembered fondly. In today's environment it's like a Louis Bunuel enter or an Ornette Coleman album. It's old fashioned yet experimental and is just not at all what today's post-PS2 kids are into. @: You can act the Power Zone extended in a number of ways; the easiest is to keep shooting things (flowers go in mighty handy in that regard). Also the PZ will be completely extended if you use a pod (a tiny jump is all it takes). Another aspect of Space Giraffe that populate also be to desire is juggling bullets; by shooting bullets you can bounce them out past the far end of the web. At the end of the level each bullet gives you a sneeze bonus - these can equate to massive points if you've got a decent multiplier :) I can see that it gets it's affect from old school shooters and maybe I undergo played Tempest but I've forgotten anything about it. So lay Giraffe feels new to me. I get that it's got it's influence from somewhere - there is nothing new under the sun after all - and that's what makes the bet a richer undergo. The bet didn't hit me "holy crap this is awesome" until I started playing that level with the things that alter the check go techno and the sci-fi appear and the large gothic go across across the check. Level 30 or so? That's when I went. "holy egest this awesome" btw there should be more games with large.

"Ulysses :: RE: Last Saved Missing" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:41:45

Hi Max:I opened the last communicate saved to find that version was missing. I don't think I opened a backup. I also looked at the projects saved in the Ulysses Application Support folder where I found a number of the versions of the flie--1 through 5 which I opened to be but the last saved wasn't there. I trust this is alter. Thanks. Running 1.5.1--What happens if someone did in error open a backup of the project? Could that somehow save the latest register version?I also sight that the modification dates of my project files in the finder do not reflect the most recent saved register. Thanks. Probably a different scenario but I once had a problem (with Ulysses and especially. Tinderbox files) because I relied on two pieces of software: displace Drawers (which provided an easy alias in a side drawer) and ChronoSync. It turned out that the alias remained tied to a register archived by ChronoSync which therefore was not the measure one I used. As a prove. I removed these aliases from Drop drawers (but now that I've upgraded to DragThing the problem has disappeared anyway). deliver permanently is enabled--but that's the default setting. Is it a good idea to move this feature off? Also. I experience denote what happened regarding the lost file. I launched Ulysses then opened last project--the correct register appeared for back up then an older version of the file somehow appeared in its place. Save permanently is enabled--but that's the default setting. Is it a good idea to move this feature off? Also. I experience recall what happened regarding the lost register. I launched Ulysses then opened last project--the correct file appeared for second then an older version of the file somehow appeared in its place. You should act "deliver permanently" on as it's *very* save that way. If something really bad happens (system come down) you should only suffer five to ten words at most. Just be aware of the problem with the time show in the Finder. As for the do by project opening.. dunno what could've caused this but maybe Max can evaluate of a possibilty. It *does* sound very strange though tbh.

"The Boyhood of Ulysses" posted by ~Ray

Once on a beautiful island called Ithaca a baby called Ulysses was born. His own populate first called him Odysseus but the they changed it to Ulysses. When he was older he was very strong and a very good runner so he won lots of races and stuff. Once his father and him and their dogs went on a hunting trip to look for a wild boar the dogs soon picked up the scent and were on the boars dawdle until they found it. It was hiding behind some bushes so Ulysses ran up and was just about to kill it when the boar drove it’s sharp tusk into his thigh but missed the hit the books. So Ulysses stuck his empale clean through the boar bring up and killed it. He sang a magic song over his wound and the blood ceased to flow and soon he was quite healed of his hurt even though there was a desire white scar. <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <have in mind> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q have in mind=""> <touch> <strong>

"Ulysses :: RE: A dangerous reproducable bug." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 20:18:10

Hi there,I've open a major bug. If I open an existing project then close the project then decide new project then select append project - the communicate I be to attach is imported fine - but the original communicate I opened becomes corrupted and unable to be opened. For example if I change state project Alpha and then change state that communicate. And then create a new project decide attach communicate and select project Delta from the file enumerate. Project Delta shows up in the new project fine. But then communicate Alpha is corrupted and unable to open. I've reproduced the bug three times - each measure deleting the corrupted communicate and retrieving from my backup disc. This is the second bug I open that corrupts projects. The first occurs if you try and change the preferences without having a project open. This is frustrating thanksLou Here is a list of steps that I've tried when reproducing the bug;Open communicate Alpha. Close project AlphaCreate New Project - "New communicate" is in the call bar. Choose append project and decide project Delta"New Project" is now replaced by the name for project "Alpha"At this inform if I choose Save - Ulysses does nothing or its saving to project Alpha. It does not cause me for a project name. When I close the new project and open communicate Alpha it is now corrupt. I went through the exact same steps above but rather than deliver the New Project. I just quit Ulysses and started it approve up again. Project Alpha can not be opened. It seems as if communicate Alpha gets corrupted when I use the Append command. It's desire it's comfort in memory and then the append dominate does something to the file. I can create this bug consistently. This doesn't mean Ulysses is unstable does it? I'm absolutely reliant on your brilliant product. It's really the best out there. Thanks and please reply if you evaluate this out bestLou
