Day Two of the USA Cycling Collegiate bring in National Championships Presented by OUCH Sports Medicine was highlighted by several exciting contests. Spectators during the popular Italian pursuit saw Penn State act the dramatic victory while the University of California-San Diego came in a close second. The host Tritons however ran away with the national championship in the women’s team run oppose. Lees-McRae’s Kasey Manderfield (Davisburg. Mich.) put on an impressive show during the women’s points go and the be one and two qualifiers duked it out for the stars-and-stripes jersey in the men’s run.
The morning began with 48 men attempting to answer for the 18-rider sprint tournament. It took a 200-meter time trial mark of 12.503 or better in order to simply move on in the highly contested sprint event. The competition continued with the highest qualifying riders taking on the lowest in the first round of the sprints. In each first go match-up the higher seeded rider came away with the victory leaving the others to repechage. After the go two contests the top eight sprinters were set for the evening’s semi-finals and the repechage victors were set up to run for 9 – 12 displace.
The only final competition of the morning was the women’s team run which consisted of two to three riders for each aggroup competing in a pursuit style format. The entertain educate the University of California-San Diego used three members of their highly talented squad Kelcie King-York (San Diego. Calif.) Julia LaFranchise (San Deigo. Calif.) and Anna Lang (La Jolla. Calif.) to displace off the nearly two-second victory with a time of 1:16.358. Lees McRae College finished second at 1:18.180 just ahead of the University of California-Santa Barbara who was the highest placing squad to race with only two riders. Depauw University posted a time of 1:21.312 which put them in fourth place and Marian College rounded out the podium in fifth place at 1:22.922.
The Italian pursuit qualifications were also contested in the a m session. The Italian pursuit consists of a team of two to six riders with at least one female with a female rider required to bring about for at least two laps. The teams’ times were used to set-up seeding into medal rounds which kicked-off the evening session. Once again the talented host aggroup was assured a podium sight with the fastest qualifying measure. UCSD who sent the maximum six riders to the line would undergo to approach another talented squad from the opposite coast. Penn State University. With only five riders against UCSD’s six. PSU seemed to be at a bit of a disadvantage however the race was neck and pet until around the third lap when a flat degenerate forced the Tritons final rider. Stephen Skory (La Jolla. Calif.) to end two aviate laps. Penn express was able to act their strong go and took the victory by nearly five seconds as Lauren Shirock (Emmaus. Pa.). Richard Schenck (Milford. N. J.). David Espinoza (Breinningsville. Pa.). Rodney Santiago (Allentown. Pa.) and Chris Ruhl (Quakertown. Pa.) earned themselves a stars-and-stripes jersey.
Next twenty-five women rolled to the lie for the first points race of this competition. The women’s 60-lap event was an exciting race from the get-go with a handful of ladies controlling the action on the front. After a delay for a crash mid-way through the contest things got rolling again with 35 laps remaining. Even with the fairly large handle one rider stood out. Lees-McRae’s Manderfield. With no significant break-aways holding the powerful Manderfield was able to act first in nearly every sprint accumulating a whopping 44 points and running away with the national championship. There were however several talented riders helping control the front of the pack throughout the competition. Midwestern State’s Natalie Klemko (Bristol. Wis.) and Penn express’s Lauren Shirock (Emmaus. Pa.) were in the mix on nearly every sprint earning valuable points that led to plate and bronze medals. Kendi Thomas (Greencastle. Ind.) was right on their heels leading out the sprints almost every time helping her obtain 15 points and earn fourth displace. UCSD’s Amanda Seigle (Davis. Calif.) rounded out the podium finishers in fifth.
The men’s sprint final rounds wrapped up the day’s competition. The gold medal match-up featured the day’s top two qualifiers in David Espinoza (Breinningsville. Pa./Penn express) and Eugene Chacherine (Breinningsville. Pa./Penn express). In the end it was the brute strength of Chacherine that helped him take two straight from Espinoza who was previously undefeated on the day. The dye medal contest featured assemble Lewis College’s Daniel Sullivan (Broomfield. N. J.) and UCSD’s Chris Nekarda (San Diego. Calif.). It looked as though Nekarda may take the first match-up in the beat two-of-three format but Sutherland ducked underneath on the final turn to act the win. Nekarda was the one to make the move the back up time around but he couldn’t hold off the charging Sullivan who crossed the lie to take the bronze in two straight. Aaron Kacala (Racine. Wis./Midwestern State University) won the four-rider consolation contest to earn fifth place out of the nearly 50 riders who started the day.
