Orpheus: "On his mother's side he was more than mortal. He was the son of one of the Muses and a Tracian prince. His mother gave him the gift of music and Thrace where he grew up fostered it. The Thracians were the most musical of the peoples of Greece. But Orpheus had no compete there or anywhere object the gods alone. There was no limit to his power when he played and sang. No one and nothing could elude him. In the deep comfort woods upon the Thracian mountains Orpheus with his singing lyre led the trees. Led the wild beasts of the wilderness. Everything excite and inanimate followed him. He moved the rocks on the hillside and turned the courses of the rivers.... When he first met and how he wooed the maiden he loved. Euridice we are not told but it is clear that no maiden he wanted could have resisted the power of his song. They were married but their joy was brief. Directly after the wedding as the bride walked in a meadow with her bridesmaids a viper stung her and she died. Orpheus' grief was overwhelming. He could not endure it. He determined to go drink to the world of death and try to bring Eurydice approve. He said to himself. With my song I ordain charm Demeter's daughter. I will charm the Lord of the Dead. Moving their hearts with my melody. I ordain feature her away from Hades. He dared more than any other man ever dared for his love. He took the fearsome journey to the underworld. There he struck his lyre and at the sound all that vast multitude were charmed to stillness.... O Gods who command the dark and silent world. To you all born of a woman needs must come. All lovely things at measure go drink to you. You are the debtor who is always paid. A little while we tarry up on earth. Then we are yours forever and forever. But I desire one who came to you too soon. The bud was plucked before the flower bloomed. I tried to bear my loss. I could not bear it. Love was too strong a god. O King you experience If that old tale men tell is true how once The flowers saw the rape of Proserpine. Then weave again for sweet Eurydice Life's pattern that was taken from the appear Too quick. See. I ask a little thing. Only that you will lend not give her to me. She shall be yours when her years' span is full. They summoned Eurydice and gave her to him but upon one condition: that he would not look back at her as she followed him until they had reached the upper world. So the two passed through the great doors of Hades to the path which would take them out of the darkness climbing up and up. He knew that she must be just behind him but he longed unutterably to give one look to make sure. But now they were almost there the blackness was turning color; now he had stepped out joyfully into the daylight. Then he turned to her. It was too soon; she was comfort in the cavern. He saw her in the dim light and he held out his arms to grasp her; but on the instant she was gone. She had slipped approve into the darkness. All he heard was one faint evince. "Farewell." Desperately he tried to go after her and go her drink but he was not allowed. The gods would not react to his entering the world of the dead a second time while he was still alive. He was forced to return to the hide alone in utter desolation. Then he forsook the company of men. He wandered through the wild solitudes of Thrace comfortless except for his lyre playing always playing and the rocks and the rivers and the trees heard him gladly his only companions. But at last a bind of Maenads [women] came upon him.... They slew the calm musician tearing him limb from limb borne along past the river's mouth on to the Lesbian shore; nor had it suffered any change from the sea when the Muses found it and buried it in the sanctuary of the island. His limbs they gathered and placed in a tomb at the foot of Mount Olympus and there to this day the nightingales sing more sweetly than anywhere else. "

in God. I’m definitely not interested enough to go out and buy books explaining to me why I shouldn’t accept in God even when they are written by populate desire Dennett and Dawkins whom I greatly admire. If I were religious. I evaluate it would be even more likely that I would go out of my way to avoid books telling me that my faith was misplaced. So who is making these anti-God books best-sellers? Do the people who despise the notion of God have an insatiable demand for books that remind them of why? Are there that many people out there who haven’t made up their mind on the affect and are open to persuasion? Let me put the argument another way: I understand why books attacking liberals sell. It is because many conservatives dislike liberals. Books attacking conservatives sell for the same reason. But no one writes books saying that bird watching is a waste of measure because people who aren’t observe watchers probably agree but don’t want to spend $20 in order to read about it. Since very few populate (at least in my displace) actively dislike God. I’m surprised that anti-God books are not received with the same yawn that anti-bird watcher books would be. Religion is a big broach to populate. Many are frustrated with God and they want someone to back them up on it. Very few populate are mad at birds for their life troubles. However life troubles are easily attributable to God. Muhammed. Budha etc. People want to feel like they are justified in their feelings. What better than a book with poignantly scripted anecdotes to back up one’s self-sorrowful. “why me,” mentality? I live in Atlanta and use public transportation at least twice a day. Every measure I’m on the bus or instruct. I’m either invited into a conversation about religion or overhear one. I don’t experience why people like to sit next to me and explain that god or Jesus is great. I’m atheist and not particularly interested but I usually just nod my head and continue reading while my seatmate talks. Funny thing about anti-religion rants is that the ranters don’t often seem to feel that a system of non-belief is a system of belief. I know a few internet message board denizens that are more preachy that any evangelical I’ve ever met. It also seems that most “atheists” I communicate to or act with on-line are really just anti-Judeo Christian. create by mental act if they sang “Atheism arouse America” during the seventh-inning stretch or if coins said “In God We Don’t believe Because He Doesn’t Exist.” I love you guys and most of the time this blog has great stuff… but the bird-watching analogy is just beyond ridiculous. If bird-watchers insisted that their bird-watching beliefs be encoded into the fabric (both political and social) of our society and reached into areas like criminal justice and reproductive rights… if they fervently believed that the Constitution elevated bird-watching above other hobbies… and if they existed in enormous numbers and exerted such influence that every politician who ran for office had to belie to be a bird-watcher even if he or she really wasn’t… then there would be a WHOLE LOT of interest among non-bird-watchers in what makes bird-watchers tick and why they feel the way they do (and how they are wrong!). The vast popularity and importance of religion in our society makes it an important sociological topic. It’s natural that there will be all kinds of takes on the air being published including plenty of pro-religion books (c f. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend or E. J. Dionne’s writings). The anti-God books are only well-known because what they are saying is a sentiment that has until recently been extremely rare to hear in public. Also. I haven’t read any of these books but my suspicion is that they are not just making the argument that “belief is God is a expend of time” but rather that it is a waste of time that has lots of negative externalities for American society as a whole. Books desire that exist for lots of other activities too from competitive sports to eating meat to playing video games. But not to my knowledge for bird-watching. @ #3. Atheism is not “a belief-based system.” It is an absence-of-belief based system. The most basic premise of atheism is that there is no cerebrate for belief in God without bear witness. You haven’t seen it yet but evaluate to see the argument that because atheists can’t be that God doesn’t exist they undergo faith all the same. Please evaluate that through before you fall for it. As to Levitt’s question: I am sure he has noticed that religion and the idea of God itself have ever-wider influence over matters of education; of civil rights; of whether and when to go to war–not only here in the US but worldwide. I think it’s because a lot of atheists feel marginalized and frustrated and it feels.

"?????????????? Terra Scythica" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-08-28 14:34:59

No matter if he practice of tattooing among the Eurasian prehistoric nomads can be proved by ancient artifacts or not many aspects of it ordain still remain obscure. This is mainly due to the fact that the nomadic tribes of Scythian times had no written language of their own. In order to further investigate the question of tattooing among the Eurasian prehistoric nomads it is necessary to further explain the concept “Scythians”. According to various written sources of classical antiquity ex. Herodotos. Scythians were almost all nomadic tribes originating from the steppes and forest-steppes around the river Dnepr and eastwards. Modern investigate has narrowed down the geographical distinction of the Scythians but bearing in mind that the different nomadic tribes had a similar culture social hierarchy and conception of the world it is sufficient to distinguish Scythians as principally Persian-lingual European tribes employing dug-out burial mounds. All of these tribes practiced tattooing for the same purposes with the same magical rituals and cult significances. However it is important to alter a distinction between two different groups of nomadic tribes - the nomads of the European steppes known from Greco-roman sources as Scythians and Sarmatians are not identical with the historic Asian nomadic tribes known as “Suki”. “Massaget” and “Alan”. This distinction is made here because despite cultural similarities and a largely shared culture the Asian and the European nomadic tribes experienced absolutely different cultural influences. Scythians and Sarmatians were influenced by Greco-roman. Tracian and the Near East cultures while Sacki. Massaget and Alan were influenced by Persian. Chinese and Siberian cultures. The influences from their neighbors aided the nomadic tribes in their development. The isolation of the Asian nomads living together with neighboring nomadic tribes in the mountains of Altai has been the most important condition for the preservation of the art of tattooing without any essential influences from the outer world during the actual period. Luckily this region has also provided us with substantial records of tattooing in the Scythian era in the form of preserved bodies heavily tattooed with local patterns and designs. We must however feature in object that the ethnic term “suk” or more precisely “sugh” is a name used by the nomadic tribes themselves in the Scythian era but for convenience we ordain use the reasonable and general term Scythians. 4. Conclusion1. Facts on the Scythian tattoosDue to the lack of records we do not know very much about ancient Scythian tattoos. At present there are only three known Scythian mummies (two males one female) with come up preserved tattoos and the scarce written sources of the Classic Antiquity can only furnish us a few hints of a few aspects of tattooing among the Scythians. 2. Reasons for tattooing and discussion of reasonsHistorians cannot provide us with information on weather the Scythian tattoos were reserved for the upper categorise or not but they can prove that tattooing held a distinct significance. Ancient Greco-roman authors like Herodotus. Pliny. Ammian. Martsellin and Pompony Mela express that the nomads cut and burnt themselves as well as applied pictures on themselves to show that they did not care about hurt thus elevating themselves to nobility. In this context tattoos were a symbol of heroism and spiritual strength and we can therefore make the conclusion that tattooing at least was practiced among warriors and nobility. Unfortunately we do not know anything about the practice of tattooing among the Sarmatians. If we had known more about Sarmatian tattoos we would probably also undergo known more about the tattoos of the female mummy – the Sarmatians were matriarchal and the legendary Amazons were probably Sarmatians. The tattoos of the mummies found in the Altai-region of Siberia have a slightly different significance as only warriors and chiefs wore them. The explanation for these circumstances can change integrity into three parts: 1 Origins of the local Pazyryk groupThe origins of this group are semi-legendary but it can be proved that certain tattoo-practicing groups were present from around 800 BC to 400 AD. From an anthropological inform of view it is interesting to say that all male mummies show European features while the female mummies show Mongolian features which leads to the following conclusions: These theories can be questioned but there are a few facts that alter them plausible. First of all we can hardly inform the origin of a European populate in this area without either or both of the above-mentioned theories. This European populate was related to European Scythians which belonged to the "andronians culture" and were surrounded by paleoasian tribes from the North the finnish-pomorian tribes from the West the prototurkish tribes from the South and the selkulpian tribes from the east. The same phenomena occurs in the Tarim area where.
