"Attended My First KenCon Tonight" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:23:08

Local writer Ken Rand had his monthly KenCon today at the Barnes and Noble at the Southtowne Mall. KenCon is really has a gathering of local writers who talk about what they are doing conventions they have been too and share some work with the group. This was my first meet-up with this group. I feel a little out of place seeing that I’m the only one not yet published. I’m working on it. It was great. The people there tonight are first rate. Here is a list of those I could remember and a link to their site. The fun part about this meet-up was I got to reconnect with an old friend I hadn’t seen in 5 or 6 years. Turns out she’s running a very successful magazine here in Salt Lake. - Ken is the grand master of all. He has hundreds of stories several books published including two upcoming books called Pax Dakota and Where Angels Fear. Ken is the host of KenCon aptly named for himself. - Paul is a speculative fiction writer. He also writes poems and shared one with us tonight. Fantastic. Love Patrick’s writing. - Paul has such an energetic and contagious personality. Paul has a book coming out in May 2008 called The Golden Cord and has been published in various other books. - Eric is a science fiction and fantasy writer and has been published in various magazines and books. - Rebecca has a new book coming out in January called Red Dragon Codex. From what I understand she is a very accomplished writer. - Beth is Editor-in-Chief of Shimmer a speculative fiction magazine which is published quarterly. There was also another couple there who came later and I forgot to get their names. Sorry guys. Maybe someone can help me with that? I also forgot to take pictures but since it was my first visit I guess its ok. I appreciate Ken inviting me. I can’t wait for the next one. I want to report I’ve written a lot more of my Novel and short stories by then. Sounds like it was a great meetup. Nothing motivates you like meeting people already successfully doing what you dream of doing. I know some people can find that discouraging and maybe in the past I did too but of late I've come around to thinking that you need to be surrounded by successful people if you want to be successful. There's an infectious synergy to be gained by hanging with doers instead of dreamers.~Douglas-=-☆ - Overcoming Neurological Disabilities With Lots Of Humor And Attitude Hey Douglas yes I agree surrounding myself with those who are successful is something I've always tried to do. The meet up was great. Very informal. Everyone had some great stories and most importantly getting published. It was very cool.

"Kid Magazine Writers" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 19:31:07

I've been thinking about going back to submitting some cram for magazines.. mostly poetry but maybe some other cram too. I've had a few stories poems and articles in various children's magazines but that was mostly several years ago and I haven't kept up with the market very well. So. I was happy to reacquaint myself with an e-zine published by Jan Fields a talented writer/organizer/editor (among other things. I'm sure!). This e-zine is now on air 39 and I'm pleased that one of my former columns is in it--the to evaluate out where the meter isn't working. I'm change surface more pleased to remind myself about this terrific publication. In this month's issue. I learned about a new place run by Rosanne Tolin a former Guideposts for Kids editor who bought a few things from me. Terrific! Here's a new merchandise for me to check out. Features consider things desire investigate tips specific analyses of an issue of a children's magazine (which are incredibly helpful--especially if it's not a magazine you have easy find to) new markets editor interviews and all sorts of alter cram. Oh and there's a great magazine market command where you can look up a magazine and see not only their submission guidelines but also what has appeared in Kid Magazine Writers about that magazine. What a great resource! If you have any interest in submitting stories poems articles or activities to kids' or teens' magazines this site is a great place to get a monthly dose of info and encouragement. See ya there! Awww.. that makes KMW appear so good. Thank you kindly lady for the loan of the excellent article.. and for the nice things you said. As time was of the essence to get Blogging for a aid underway we worked with the list of artists whose snowflakes were already in possession of Dana-Farber. Therefore not all the participating artists will be featured. This in no way diminishes our appreciation for their contributions to this worthy cause. "A writer always quite fringy" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 21:12:51

Tonight when the Dada von Bzdulow Theatre from Poland stages the first of four performances here of Several Witty Observations (á la Gombrowicz) which debuted at Manhattan's La MaMa in 2006 you can evaluate a literary/theatrical interact. According to critics who caught measure year's performances the three dancer/choreographers - Katarzyna Chmielewska. Rafal Dziemidok and Leszek Bzdyl - deliver Gombrowicz's droll conflicted alienated insights through yet one more medium of beautify modernism - their attach bodies. If you haven't heard of Gombrowicz or just bear a distant comprehend of him as a more acerbic. beautify Kafka forgive yourself. Even the cosmopolitan literary organization Words Without Borders regards Gombrowicz as probably "the most important twentieth-century novelist most Western readers undergo never heard of." Yet Milan Kundera deemed him "one of the greatest novelists of our century." (That would be the 20th.) John Updike praised him as "a know of verbal burlesque a connoisseur of psychological act upon." Susan Sontag in her say to Ferdydurke (Yale University touch). Gombrowicz's major 1937 novel declared him "extravagant brilliant disturbing defy funny. .. " He began as a child of the beautify upper middle categorise whose early avant-garde bring home the bacon in Warsaw including Ferdydurke a significant succes d'estime targeted the endless conservative emit of Polish elite grow about the nation's lost sovereignty its unfair marginalization in Europe and other complaints any cultural visitor to Poland still finds today. The key move in Gombrowicz's life took displace in 1939. In August he agreed to travel on the inaugural jaunt of the Polish cruise liner Chrobry to Buenos Aires to participate in a cultural road show for the prewar Polish government. Then Hitler invaded Poland on Sept. 1 starting World War II. Stranded in Argentina without money or Spanish. Gombrowicz decided to be rather than return home. His innovative novel Trans-Atlantyk also published by Yale uses the old baroque form of beautify memoir to capture the experience of getting trapped in Argentina. The shocker - both to him and some old friends - was that he remained there for 24 years at times extremely poor. He worked as a bank clerk for years engaging from a hold with an elite Argentinian literary establishment that he considered too conservative and Europhile while preferring Buenos Aires' more downmarket homosexual delights. "I was nothing," he wrote in his memoir. A Kind of Testament. "so I could do anything." Elsewhere he asserted: "I do not believe in a nonerotic philosophy. I do not believe thought that liberates itself from sex." For much of Gombrowicz's career the Polish Communist government considered him a modernist bad boy and banned his work. International literary fame began only in 1958 when Ferdydurke appeared in French. At the end of his life. Gombrowicz thanks to a Ford Foundation give returned to Europe though not Poland - he replied to one friend who asked him to reconcile with the Polish government. "I am a separate state." After six years of literary productivity and stardom. Gombrowicz died in 1969 in Vence. France. Characterizing his work can be as challenging as trying to understand his life choices. As a man. Gombrowicz loved to displease others. Antinationalist he jokingly promised "to liberate Poles from Poland." He change surface dissed Jorge Luis Borges in Buenos Aires - the two great writers hated each other. Gombrowicz's bring home the bacon takes many forms - autobiography pastiche the experimental novel aphoristic philosophy absurdist theater. The always provocative stylist writes about the imperious sway of "Form" upon writers the difficulty of ever finding the "self," the way "secondary" literary cultures are treated. Unlike many modernist writers. Gombrowicz acknowledged and remained in enjoin intellectual dialogue during his life with philosophers from Kant to Deleuze. He struggled in his thought between the limiting demands of art and a strong existentialist belief that real life defies hold back self-definition and orderliness. Hours spent with Gombrowicz could leave your brain slightly fried but also piqued stimulated aroused. Adding a pinch of "Dada" over the next few days surely won't straighten him out into boredom. So if you emerge from Several Witty Observations with a whole new Eastern European postmodernist sensibility just bequeath: Witold you so first.
