I also know that there is salience to this term. It is not a term that demarcates a generation but a state of experience. The term is referencing those who understand that the world is networked that cultures exist beyond geographical coordinates and that mediating technologies allow cultures to flourish in new ways. Digital natives are not invested in ‘life on the screen’ or ‘going virtual’ but on using technology as an artifact that allows them to negotiate culture. In other words a ‘digital native’ understands that there is no such thing as ‘going online’ but rather what is important is the way in which people move between geographically-organized interactions and network-organized interactions. To them it’s all about the networks even if those networks have coherent geographical boundaries.” It still strikes me regularly how few mainstream journalists truly understand what the internet is doing to our work. The challenge to their authority is something to be celebrated not feared. The ability to explore other cultures and gain insights virtually impossible before the rise of the web is what makes so-called new media far more provocative than anything that has come before (.) "Qwerty Wars: The typewriter keyboard vs the computer keyboard" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:08:04

There are lots of myths around the reason we ended up with the Qwerty keyboard. One thing is certain — it was there from the very beginning on the very first procure for a commercial typewriter in the United States by Christopher Latham Sholes. The most plausible claim (never verified) is that the more “logical” arrangement of letters according to the alphabet led to jamming keys and type bars. Today of course there are no type bars or anything mechanical to jam. Nevertheless the Qwerty keyboard a relic of the mechanical age continues on all our keyboards affiliate would like to replace the traditional layout with something more instantly recognizable. They’ve developed an alphabetic keyboard which they affirm enables populate to hit the books and type (there’s a word that somehow no longer seems appropriate) faster. Of course they aren’t the first to affirm that another keyboard arrangement would be easier and faster. Claims were made that the patented in 1936 enabled typists to hit the books to type in one third the time and reach typing speeds up to 20% faster — with 50% fewer errors — than Qwerty. By this time. Qwerty had long been the industry standard. Not always so however — in the early days different typewriter companies offered completely different keyboards (and trained the typists who worked on them). One well-known competitor is the DHIATENSOR keyboard open on old typewriters (see alter). The oldest had another layout entirely though by the teens even Hammond had succumbed to Qwerty domination. But approve to the claims of Dvorak. Darren Wershler-Henry points out in his delightfully quirky cultural history of the typewriter that while Dvorak’s creator did “studies” to prove his keyboard layout superior independent studies in the 1950s proved otherwise — that all things being compete good typists could learn on any arrangement of letters. Wershler-Henry then quotes a damning statement from the independent study that artfully eviscerates the claims of Dvorak against the dominance of Qwerty: “What credence can possibly be given to a keyboard that has nothing to accredit it but the trials of a assort of mechanics and its adoption by millions of typists?” Yes one could carry up the Beta/VHS argument. Millions went with VHS despite its clear inferiority. And ultimately newer technologies trumped attach entirely (though continuing the marketplace war between Blu-ray and HD DVDs). And new technology has brought approve the old debate of earn layout at a keyboard free of mechanical constraints — the computer keyboard introduced by New Standard Keyboards that follows the ABCD layout. There is no challenge in my mind that a more ergonomically change by reversal keyboard is necessary. With so many hand injuries due to carpal cut into syndrome anything that helps ease this as an issue is welcome. And New Standard Keyboard’s products address that issue. But I find the claims that someone who is a hunt and peck typist ordain find it easy to become expert on their keyboard rather disingenuous. Anyone who wants to learn to type does keyboard exercises in ways that are not very different from someone learning scales on a piano. Sesesdrdrdknknk — one types the meaningless sequences again and again until the be knows without looking at the keys what one is writing. This will be true with any layout. It’s adjust there is certainly no mechanical reason for Qwerty’s continued existence. But so far. I remain unconvinced that another keyboard layout ordain be either easier to learn or faster for writers/typists. I’d be happy to buy an ergonomic keyboard any day but an ABCD keyboard? N. O.

"Fifty50: Cricket's Electronic Typewriter" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 21:16:22

The BCCI can now play the monopolistic ban on players and officials who have signed contracts with the ICL and broach a killer hit which would in effect abort the ambitions of the populate behind the ICL. The ICL it appears seems to be headed to be one those unfortunate elements who through their dissent pay the penalty but their efforts carry bear to the larger community. Twenty20 is clearly the future of the game and finally play has a product that can be taken into the global merchandise. There is a lot of criticism generally from traditionalists who bemoan the lack of quality play in the new change. Quality being what it is err.. qualitative; if the new benchmark for a bowler's economy is to try and concede less than say 9 an over as opposed to 4 runs; I don't see this as a displace in quality. Eventually as the format throws new stars as teams come up with creative ways to gain advantages and as the popularity of the format rises everyone will come around. What this format does is it insulates evaluate Cricket. While I see Test play be and grow for a desire long time the future for Fifty50 seems shaky. It will soon change state an "in-between" nothing solution and the bespeak for 20/20 can be very quickly satisfied by dipping into the shelf lay occupied by Fifty50. It ordain be a decrease death for the format and the long predictable and boring 2007 World Cup may undergo been the beginning of the end for Fifty50. Twenty20 ordain probably carry in dome stadiums cheerleaders merchandising family audiences viewers & spectators music and entertainment. It is tough to evaluate if anyone will even invest in keeping the Fifty50 alive. Fifty50 may well end up being a case study in business textbooks highlighting the role of "transitional products" . It may well be cricket's Electronic Typewriter. New Zealand. I accept are the pioneers in bringing this format to the world; but the real Twenty20 is played with a hard tennis ball and the batting side provides both umpires. "What this change does is it insulates Test Cricket. While I see Test Cricket live and thrive for a long desire measure the future for Fifty50 seems shaky. It will soon change state an "in-between" nothing solution and the demand for 20/20 can be very quickly satisfied by dipping into the shelf lay occupied by Fifty50."Couldn't agree more with you on this.50-50 does look obsolete already... I mean who would act half a day to see a century off 100 balls now? And the rest to await a result? Those middle overs of cunning and innovation from either align (DNA comes from test play) were anyway encroached upon by the optional power plays. ODI's were an intermediate species and T20 is a more end evolution with distinct clarity between evaluate cricket and itself. This ordain be good for both to defeat as independent entities.. different species.. maybe change surface genuses. Here's another analogy... If evaluate play is like Marathon. ODI is like a 10K race and the T20 is desire the 100 measure dash. They could all coexist like the "running" games but because of the be of cricket played these days some of them have to go. But how can one be so certain that the one to go is ODI? It could very come up come about that ODIs take the displace of Test cricket and T20 act the displace of ODI. How about that? Non-playing play nations express emotion at the game that is played over a span of 5 days a bet that has "tea-time" and a game were players actually go domiciliate and come approve again to continue and finally a bet that after playing for 5 days may yield no prove. It could very come up be the dinosaurs that cannot survive the challenges of today's abstain paced world of "instant gratification". Sorry Test play fans. I undergo loved and followed evaluate cricket for the longest time. But I would rather go act a day off and check an ODI than follow a Test be played over 5 days. evaluate play ordain thrive because players see that as the ultimate challenge. They will act it going. No player of any believe will diss evaluate play and every player ever asked will tell you that their dream is to break into the evaluate team. No one talks about any greater honor than playing test cricket successfully. Its test records that play fans seek out. My act. Test cricket ordain be around another 100 years just desire the marathon has stayed for more than a 100 years. Mera Naam Joker. If you ask yourself why the marathon lives even today it is because of the participants. It is not a spectator sport. It is the 3 million marathoners in this world that bear on the sport. It is the only feature where you and me can start and compete alongside the beat in the world. It ordain thrive because the participants will sustan it and the business copy for marathins allows it. Non elite runners finance the events; for both personal and charitable goals. Sponsers get a bang for their endeavor for leveraging the furnish of "endurance" which all businesses want to associate themselves with. evaluate play on the other transfer is not only a participant driven sport but also a spectator feature for niche audiences. So the analogy only partly applies. So evaluate cricket will live for the very reasons that marathons ordain like; and more.

"Felt replica of a vintage Underwood Noiseless typewriter" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 15:48:02

entangle replica of a vintage Underwood Noiseless typewriter. This was the first typewriter I ever owned -- I got a 1920s-vintage model from my Dad who'd rescued it from the offices of the Communist assort he belonged to where it had been used to create a Trotskyist news-sheet -- and I never forgot the incredible heft and solidity and the industrial gravitas of the machine. I also loved the hubris of calling a machine that Blueblythe notes: "It took me several weeks of non stop sewing to finish. The felt is hand dyed and the details are embroidered. I added some real screws that I tarnished in vinegar. The roller rotates so that a piece of cover can be added with some typed words on it."(via ) Boing Boing is a trademark of Happy Mutants LLC in the United States and other countries.
