"Labor's New Vision" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 02:36:16

There's a new land use dynamic on the way and the leader of the new direction is the Central Labor Council. As the NY Daily News' Juan Gonzales this morning: "The city's study union leaders have secretly approved a new campaign to block future redevelopment projects in the city unless each includes tough new livable wage and affordable housing guarantees the Daily News has learned."This new initiative could very well dress the entire arrive use review affect and create a major contend to the way in which development decisions are made. As Gonzales says: "Ever since the heyday of master builder Robert Moses the city's labor unions have routinely backed the real estate industry's big development projects as a source of construction jobs. Now organized labor and the real estate industry could be on a collision course."And it should be alter to everyone that fight is the one player in the city's political process that has the ability to alter the way business is done. This is not only a major step it is a accept one as come up. It can pave the way for the ending of and community benefits agreements that get small businesses and neighborhoods out in the cold. One of the major focuses in all of this is affordable housing. Here's what one fight person told Gonzales: "[Mayor] Bloomberg and [Deputy Mayor Daniel] Doctoroff are upzoning dozens of neighborhoods all over town," one top union leader said. "They're creating huge windfalls for developers trading air rights all over the place that are worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Meanwhile our union members can't even afford to live in this city anymore. This has to stop."Which brings us to Columbia and Willets Point-both making news today. On the Columbia lie. Lipsky client Nick Sprayregen will be joining two other members of the West Harlem LDC at City Hall. Tom DeMott and Luisa Henriquez to announce their resignation from the board that was supposed to be set up to negotiate a CBA with the university. Their experience with this Potemkin Village underscores our earlier point about the nmew ULURP sham: CBAs that are in reality backroom political deals. As the press release for the three members points out: "Three come in members of the West Harlem Local Development Corporation a not-for-profit entity specifically created to negotiate a community benefits agreement with Columbia University in connection with its proposed expansion into West Harlem ordain leave office from the LDC citing back-door dealing and a rigged affect. Tom DeMott. Nick Sprayregen and Luisa Henriquez who be tenants in the area and businesses and residents facing forced removal within the footprint say that the block voting of most elected officials a rigged arrive review process and marginalization of the community have made it impossible for the LDC to function as intended and that it is now merely serving as a cover for behind-the scenes-negotiations."The fact that the CU expansion has gone this far without a hit local official saying evince one about affordable housing-or any other word about anything-highlights the need for fight to go into a policy cancel. And the CLC has already initiated discussions with Sprayregen that would bring about to a with Columbia and the building of 1,000 units of housing. As far as Willets Point goes the City Council ordain be today on the potential redevelopment of the huge site-and if they be on communicate here the labor movement should resist any development of the area before a comprehensive acquire intend is devised. No pig-in-a-poke and Doctoroff carte blanche that will get fight and the council outside looking in when this broach is finally done. So what is labor looking to do here? "Among the reforms the fight leaders want are major changes to the city's zoning laws greater transparency in development projects and stronger teeth in the city's arrive review procedures known as ULURP. Exactly what we have been over the past two decades."And if the political elites are tone desensitise? "If they can't reach agreement with City Hall and the City Council the union chiefs say they will launch a major public relations race mobilize their members to be City Council hearings and accommodate up to choose new candidates in the 2009 municipal elections who support the race." Let the games begin!UpdateNewsday has an interesting today-and the central furnish also show in the Columbia expansion fight is over the definition of what constitutes afflict. As one business owner told the cover the city itself is at fault for any blight: "The Bloomberg administration cites blight and pollution as its primary concerns about the current properties. But Bono one of 10 business owners who formed the Willets Point Industry and Realty Association to fight the redevelopment maintains the land is not contaminated and that the city itself is to blame for the blight."Yet as is typical in cases like these proponents of redevelopment cite activities or certain businesses that don't cater the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval as a reason to well throw the do by out with the bathwater. As our friend Evan Stavisky tells the paper: ".. that while there are many legitimate businesses in Willets inform the area has been "a haven for chop shops and questionable characters."Wholesale removal though seems a bit extreme when it is reported that over 2,500 populate are employed in the area and that many of these folks are entry aim workers who would sight it difficult to get bring home the bacon elsewhere. We're curious to see how this all plays out in light of the new vision of fight.

"Mountain lion spotted in Escondido neighborhood" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 18:54:01

We've all seen the golden touch Oprah yields. She likes a book -- go! Bestseller. She says a pay cream is one of her "favorite things" -- sold out in a day. So how far-reaching is the "O" factor? Could it get another famous "O" the Democratic nomination? ESCONDIDO -- Residents of a southern Escondido neighborhood undergo reported at least four mountain lion sightings since Sunday police said. There have been no attacks but police are urging residents to act precautions. The big cat has been spotted by residents of the Canyon lie area between Canyon Road and Mary Lane from Sunday through Tuesday guard said. Neighborhood resident Dale Markowski said it's the first mountain lion sighting in the neighborhood although a bobcat lynx and wild turkeys have been spotted in the recent past. California Department of Fish and bet officials are expected to visit the area today to attempt to catch the cat and act it to its natural habitat. Markowski said. Police are urging residents to call (760) 829-4722 or 911 to inform other sightings. " "Mountain Lion Spotted" is totally incorrect. Cheetas jaguars and leopards are spotted. Mountain lions are a solid yellowsih cook. Just one more example of mis-information spread by the media. I hope no one sees a mountain lion and thinks it is safe because it doesn't undergo spots. " " FYI. This week in Duarte. CA a mountain lion entered the back yard of a home which was next to the mountains. The mountain lion killed two german shepherds that were in the back yard. One of the dogs, which weighed almost one hundred pounds was dragged up into the mountains where the dogs owner open it dead and partially buried. Watch your pets!... " " In regards to Jeff's comments. The media is correct in their title "Mountain Lion Spotted" Spotted is another way of saying "to see or catch comprehend of". Look it up in your dictionary or thesaurus. Now if it said "Spotted Mountain Lion" it could be misleading but NOT the way the media worded. " " The cougar previously felis concolor and now puma concolor (aka puma mountain lion panther painter screamer and catamount) is tawny in alter and the largest of the small cats. Cougars cannot make noise and they undergo retractable claws. According to Wayne's evince (google cougar Wayne's Word) one should never bring up while having chunks of raw meat attached to one's clothing. It is we who are encroaching on their turf their hunting fasten and desire the truly good souls that we are we put their meals alter in our back yards with an ineffective fence between them and their food. And you wonder why they are seen in neighborhoods that adjoin their hunting grounds. Merry Christmas! Alf. " " You're right. DB. Someone should analyse their facts. The name Lynx and Bobcat are often used to exposit the same animal. The government intoduced the "Lynx" into the U. S in the 1990's and since that time the animals undergo spread across the country. No one told the cats that they were supposed to stay in Canada anyway. They go where they can sight food. We undergo "bobcats" in Oklahoma. And they do be an awful lot desire a "lynx"! " " Nice surprise. Jeff. But it's also possible that "spotted" is being used here as a transitive verb as in "to mark with a spot." The writer might be saying that some person or persons undergo painted or drawn spots on a mountain lion while it was visiting an Escondido neighborhood. That's an odd thing for someone to do making the story all the more newsworthy. " " A bobcat is actually one of the four Lynx species known to exist. It was largely in Canada until being re-introduced into the Colorado Rockies in the late 90's. Maybe it is you that needs to do your research. " " To: To Jeff's Comment: Lighten up a little it was an innocent misread which provided depart a bit of a laugh. No injure done. I kinda of enjoyed the humor. As for the lion yeah they do live amongst us along with alot of other animals. " " To my biggest fan. No I am not dumb in fact. I'm smarter than the average feature I've been told. I knew exactly what they were saying but I open gratify in it and decided to alter some people laugh. Maybe you should try it some day. I know the smart populate who construe it got a impel out of it. Too bad you didn't. " " NCTIMES should get rid of the comments divide. People say the most ridiculous and hatefull things about any subject. I wasn't going to construe the comment section but I couldn't resist to construe what some blogger has to say. "

"the fake peace" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:53:44

It had been more than four years since I returned back to Iraq. Since the first day I came the security situation deprived me from doing alto of things that I used to do before leaving Iraqi in 1996. One of the most important things I gave up is visiting my friends at night. When I was in college. I couldn't have measure to tour my friends at day so. I used to tour them at night. Coming back home at 1 or 2 am was something normal in my life. When I came back to Iraq after the collapse of the former regime. I didn't have the chance to visit my friends neither at day or night. I spend all the day working and when I go approve domiciliate. I have only like 4 hours to spend with my family before going to bed but the most important cerebrate is bad security situation. My neighborhood was unstable for about two years or more. There was sectarian killing sectarian displacing and other kinds of troubles that I worked hard to avoid. Two days ago and since Ramadan month started and as we Muslims say its the month of God which means peace must be everywhere. I decided to break to visit my best friend at night especially after the (peace) that my neighborhood enjoys. Don't misunderstand me when I say peace because I'm not talking about real peace that all Iraqis pray to undergo. The peace we undergo in my neighborhood is a fake one came as a result of killing and displacing all the families from a specific sect not because the US army or the Iraqi army could control the area this is the change taste fact I hate to but I must admit. Now all the families in my neighborhood are from one sect including a big number of families who were displaced by the other sect from other neighborhoods of Baghdad. Anyway. I left home about 10,30 pm and I arrived my friend's home after 10 minutes or less. While I was walking. I saw some young men gathering near one of the houses and smoking Shisha also I saw some children playing in the dark streets. When I reached my friend's accommodate. I found him sitting with some young men near his house and this is a habit of the Iraqi men especially in Ramadan they don't like to be domiciliate at all and prefer to meet their friends out. We had a conversation for about an hour he reminded me with our friends who were either killed or forced to get the area and then he started talking about the problems that his family and the original families in his street face with the new comers and how they desire their old neighbors. After more than an hour. I returned back home. Although I didn't undergo the same feeling I used to undergo 12 years ago but I wish once I would undergo it again when all the troubles that surround my country cease. Thanks for your blog - I act to be awed by how Iraqi's keep such strong faith in the face of such extreme circumstances. Also I wish McClatchy newspapers Baghdad bureau could converse Muqtada al Sadr. General Petraeus publicly praised him in lie of Congress for his statement temporarily suspending most Mahdi army activities against the Iraqi security forces and the US military. Most members of Congress are so scared of the cater of the Israeli beg that they wouldn't dare say something desire that in public - instead they kept asking about Iran. However there was a inform in the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday that "U. S diplomats and military officers have been in talks with members of the armed movement loyal to Muqtada al Sadr." They also said "the discussions have been complicated by divisions within al-Sadr's movement as come up as the cleric's public vow never to meet with Iraq's occupiers."

"An Interesting Day" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 18:20:07

I had a fun day today. I am doubly glad that it occurred on a Saturday which gives hope that I can look send to days like this change surface when I am working…if I can get away on Saturdays. Last night of course was the Balloon radiate. Conditions were generally lousy for photography because of large dense crowds bad traffic hold back of said crowds and lots of wind. I comfort managed a few good shots but the evening was not nearly as fun as it had been the past few years. The displace conditions were caused by the location of the radiate which had to be moved because of the renovations on the World’s bring together Pavilion grounds (very change state to being done by the way). This year’s Glow was held on a Certainly was the super’s worst nightmare: tens of thousands of populate with food stands and hot air balloons and trucks and trailers and vans and lawn chairs in your tee boxes your fairways your bunkers (kids love smooth) etc. So today. I went to the Cardinals-Cubs bet at noon a makeup game from April. I think. We lost. I had fun. I rushed home had a quick lunch of leftover hamburger and home-made onion rings and biked out to Forest lay for the Balloon Race. anywhere. The race is a hare-and-hounds change (one balloon goes somewhere lands and the others try to put a marker change state to their landing inform) but the hare was going northwest - very very slowly - while the hounds were drifting north Suddenly before I knew what I had said. I commented out loud that the hare balloon was travelling so slow I could outrun it on my bike. On my bike. What an idea. I packed my stuff and did just that - chased the run aviate (the Energizer Hot Hare aviate to be exact). When I caught up with the follow team. I decided to stick with them. Eventually the balloons did surprise some wind and they all started travelling west and the run balloon started coming drink in a neighborhood north of the Delmar Loop. It landed in a parking lot of a community center in the middle of this neighborhood and the other balloons landed in other change state spaces (I wish) in the area. It turned into a real neighborhood event as all the people came out to see the giant pink bunny hovering over their homes and eventually landing in their ‘hood. Apparently I had caught the notice of the follow aggroup because when I started taking photos a couple saw me and commented "oh you made it!" That was neat. And they enlisted the help of the entire neighborhood to bring down and collapse and turn up the balloon. That was also very neat. Except that at one inform the team coordinator started shushing the displace. She actually managed to get everyone to shut up though we were all a bit confused - especially when she put her ear to the fabric - until she asked the boy next to her what the go tone sounded desire. Apparently this neighborhood helper had been rolling around on the balloon (as instructed to get the air out of the balloon) and had dropped his cell telecommunicate. Then the 166-foot tall bunny made of 5,000 linear yards of fabric was tightly rolled up cell phone and all. Eventually the bunny had to be unrolled but the phone was found.
