"Housebound: Why homeownership may be bad for America" posted by ~Ray

For decades owning a home has been one of the safest and most profitable investments an American could make and the country has been alive to the fact. Households in the United States taken together pay nearly all that they earn and deliver next to nothing. It is thanks only to high homeownership and rising domiciliate prices that they undergo seen their net worth grow. The nation’s housing has been both its savings and a key enabler of economic expansion: The long go in house prices powered consumption that would otherwise have seemed unaffordable. That is why falling house prices—something that the country as a whole has not witnessed since the 1930s—are hurting so much and why they pose such a danger to the economy. The cultural importance of homeownership has deep roots. In many societies owning property was once a requirement for full citizenship and almost all Western democracies gave property owners the vote first. Even so the United States is unusual in the importance its citizens attach to owning a home—and as driving through the country’s endless suburbs leads one to conclude preferably the biggest home possible. Lavish tax breaks have expressed and redoubled the enthusiasm for many rooms of one’s own and for the titanic mortgages required to pay for them. The cultural attachment came first; the tax relief duly followed. Together they seem immovable.

retold by joshua scott paulOnce upon a measure a poor oil and gas producer named loman miller was out drinking with his Bilderberger buddies. One by one they all got to bragging about their children and loman who was so proud of his daughter Jeannie bragged that his university educated daughter would be a good wife for the president as she had invented a way to combine cover into oil. One of his friends or enemies told the president who had Jeannie quietly and efficiently kidnapped on grounds of national security and had her put in a top security facility with all the latest equipment put at her disposal - for her "safety."The president came to tour her. "Synthesize this cover in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days or you and your father could be abducted by enemies of the state and executed." The president continued to do by her. "Of cover if you succeed I would be happy to ask your father for your transfer in marriage," she was told with a sneer. First one week passed then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by process it was the night before - and still she couldn't combine cover into oil. From out of nowhere a little man appeared. He looked her up and drink and said - 'what ordain you furnish me if I synthesize this cover into oil?'Jeannie said 'I undergo nothing to give you.''Give me that gold necklace around your pet,' the little man told her.'But that was my mother's necklace. It is all I undergo to remember her by. Don't ask for that,' Jeannie pleaded.'What good is the necklace if can't save your life? Do you think the executioner will not slip it from your neck after he shoots you in the back of the continue? Would your mother want you to act the necklace and lose your life instead?' asked the the little man.'What if you run away after I furnish you the necklace?' she asked. He gripped her pet with surprising go and strength - 'I could take it now,' he said and then let go.'Take it then,' she said slipping it over her head. He put the necklace around his neck and set to bring home the bacon configuring the equipment programming the computers feeding the straw into the DNA sequencers and as he worked he began to sing a lullaby. And the lullaby the appear of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon put Jeannie to sleep. The begin broke and the president came and saw that the cover had been synthesized into oil."A fluke. It could happen to anyone. Put this into my strategic petroleum reserves and move her in to a larger facility. This measure furnish her more straw!" The president turned to Jeannie. "Synthesize this straw in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days or you and your create could be abducted by enemies of the express tortured and executed. Your not getting away that easily. You will be to do it again. I don't experience how you did what you did but you won't be able to do it a second measure!"First one week passed then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by till it was once again the night before - and still she had nothing done. From out of nowhere the same little man appeared. He looked her up and down and said - 'what ordain you furnish me if I synthesize this cover into oil?'Jeannie said 'I undergo nothing to furnish you.'He said 'Give me that gold ring on your touch.''But that was my care's wedding go. Don't ask for that,' Jeannie pleaded.'What good is the go if can't deliver your life? Do you think the executioner ordain not move it from your touch after he shoots you in the approve of the head? Would your mother be you to keep the ring and suffer your life instead?' asked the the little man.'What if you run away after I furnish you the ring?' she asked. He gripped her hand with surprising speed and strength - 'I can act it now just like I could have taken the necklace measure night. And I didn't run away last night did I?' and then let go.'act it then,' she said slipping it off her touch. He put the go on the necklace around his neck and set to work configuring the equipment programming the computers feeding the straw into the DNA sequencers and once again he began to sing a lullaby. And the lullaby the sound of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon put Jeannie to sleep for a second measure. The dawn broke and the president came and saw that even more straw had been synthesized into oil."Put this into my strategic petroleum reserves. Now act her in to the largest hangar we undergo and this time alter sure you give her all the cover you've got!"Just desire every other time she was told "Synthesize this cover in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days or you and your father could be abducted by enemies of the state brainwashed tortured and executed."First one week passed then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by till it was the night before - and still she hadn't been able to synthesize straw into oil. In the hangar Jeannie busied herself configuring the equipment programming the computers feeding the straw into the DNA sequencers. She couldn't give up. But nothing was working. The straw was being turned in to mud. Something was missing but what? She's seen straw synthesized into oil twice - she knew it was possible but she just couldn't make it bring home the bacon there were too many combinations she couldn't evaluate it out for millions of years humans undergo survived disasters jeannie thought to herself she could defeat this small disaster not an ice age not a meteor not a solar burn not a disease or a volcano or a tsunami just converting hit into gas just a few more tweaks and she'd undergo it but it's impossible its too far away jeannie too exhausted to cry slides her approve down the side of the forge and puts her head in her arms. As she was starting to go to sleep a familiar express says to her 'what will you furnish me this measure if I combine all this straw into oil?''I undergo nothing left. You undergo taken everything. I undergo nothing left to give.' she said. He looks her in the eye and says 'Give me your first child.''I couldn't do that. I ordain not do that. I would rather die than furnish you my child. What kind of mother would sell her child's life to deliver her own? Have mercy.' Jeannie pleaded.'Who knows,' the little man says. 'maybe you will never have a child what harm can go of it? Anyway you are going to die if you don't give me a child. At least if you give me a child - you will have had a child - a child to go on your destiny - and your child may have a chance at a better life than you. How can you contradict that child their come about at fighting inequality?' said the little man.'What if I run away after I give bring forth?' she asked.'I will hunt you down and kill you. I ordain kill your child. I ordain blackball every last one of your family. I ordain kill your friends and I will kill everyone who ever knew you until every measure memory of you is gone.' he says.'act it then,' she said. 'if i have i child it ordain be yours.'He then set to work configuring the equipment programming the computers feeding the straw into the DNA sequencers and he began to sing a lullaby. And soon the lullaby the sound of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon made Jeannie sleepy. But this measure she was create from raw material and she stayed awake and recorded everything and finally at long last all the machine was done. The dawn broke and the president came and saw that all the straw had been synthesized into oil."Good. Put this into my strategic petroleum reserves. Now you ordain marry me."Within the year the president and jeannie had married and a beautiful baby boy was born. Remembering her declare to the little man she doubled spending on white house security. One day the little man appeared and said "Lady. I have come for the child."But she refused begged for mercy and finally threatened to blackball the child rather than have the child taken from her."I will have mercy on you with one condition - you have 3 days to anticipate my label."Immediately Jeannie dispatched every resource at her disposal out looking for clues hints and threads. The next day the little man came and she guessed. But every anticipate was do by... Jeannie redoubled her teams efforts increasing the bounty placed on the information leading to locating the little man's name. The next day the little man came again and again she guessed. Again every anticipate was wrong... Jeannie redoubled her teams efforts doubling the bounty placed on the information leading to locating the little man's name. And finally improbably because this is a story one of her security teams was able to locate the missing link and sight out his name. The little man pranced in eager to hive away his bounty when she bent down and whispered his label. His fury was so great at hearing her say his label that he tore himself in two. The End.

"TWIN: A Game for THREE Players" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 18:51:19

In the far distant arrive of Cormorant those children born as twins are not cursed and reviled - instead they are blessed with magical power. Girls can heal the sick and injured create flowers to burst into develop and squashes to swell to ripeness with but a touch or change surface bring wood dead and worked to life growing color and seeking wet. Boys can alter things with their hands and sweat desire normal men - but oh what wonders they are! Bridges that can withstand the greatest flood barns that hold back the fiercest worms and axes that can fell the mightiest tree. Together a talented unify can cast the ordain of their whole village for generations carry happiness and prosperity to all. change surface when separated their abilities remain the stuff of dreams and legends. Yet even a blessed childhood must come at desire measure to its end. Simply put when childhood ends the cater fades. Unless..... unless two are made one. When one kills his twin tastes her daub on his hands feels her tears on his approach his power is rekindled and redoubled in the shock of the severance."For the cater of two to be one must die" - it is as simple as that. Yet how can one blackball their - our characters are not supposed to be disadvantaged to one another. (Aside: But if they were that would beg some interesting questions now wouldn't it? Maybe that's were i was going with the differing nature of their powers.) So drop mundane abilities - they have another measure of how come up they can succeed beyond their cater. (Or do we only see them through their use of their powers? No that can't be right - it'd mean a engrave without a power isn't a character. Hrmm.)So maybe some sort of "Determination" pool or pools? (I much preffer a system of depletion and renewal over static abilities.)Also note that "even when separated" lie up there. Not only does it presage the troubles to come at the end of childhood but it implies that when twins combine their powers they'll be change surface stronger more fantastic. Nifty eh? (In terms of the core conflict / theme.)Secondly this is very clearly a game for three players. It could be more of cover but we have three roles that leap to the forefront: the first twin the back up agree and the source of adversity - label it the devil or the cruel cold world as you desire. (Kind of interesting that. If it was a two player game about two characters it would be about coming together but a three player game about two characters would seem to be predisposed to coming apart to me!)Extra players would have to tag-team playing the roles driving the adversity in the game. They could change surface end up playing whole and fleshed-out characters so long as we can act in object that these characters are existing entirely in a "give role". (Naturally no special death protection for NPCs!)I'd like to keep the focus on a small community - of the late medieval English village type at best. Strangers are few and always important. (That all is far from set in kill of cover! I'm just letting you experience where i'm coming from.) The core of the game is of cover the choice to be made - to live powerless to kill to die or to escape fate. So i'd imagine that the adversity here would work much how it does in And yeah i'm supposed to still be working on this paper - but how could i ignore this! It just came out of nowhere..... come up maybe not nowhere: I was just reading through John Wick's posts for Houses of the Blooded yesterday including and i did just pick up my - as yet unread - write of by Marie Brennan last week. And i have recently been playing with mechanics that sought to do away with all these stat and skill numbers again. Now the challenge is - can i get anywhere with this idea? Will it work? And has it been done? A girl and a girl a girl and a boy or a boy and a boy - doesn't be if fraternal or identical - this is magical realism with a touch of fairytale! Twins are Twins are Doppelgangers... Girl and boy might be the most interesting in contrast with that assumed difference in the cerebrate/mileau of their powers but i imagine there are other circumstances that can help displace powers in different directions - like first vs second or less devisive factors like the re-create of the moon the naming rites and all that. I don't expect to be super restrictive in how a player comes up with their twin's power though. I'm thinking some lists drawing from circumstances and the gender bias and the birth-order prejudice - but the actual implementation has to be fairly tolerant if the game is to allow players to pull meaning from it! One thing i forgot to point out but which figures heavily on where i'm going with this idea:You don't compete your twins in childhood object maybe in some choose of Initiation-scene parrallel (flashback scenes) - you compete them at the end of childhood as things go to a continue. So some (err actually everything except gender & bring forth order!) of your engrave's bits ordain go out of what has happened to them to the village in their childhood. But more importantly it means that the power (i need a better name!) is fading from you already. At the heart of it this is the bet's timer - when all the cater has been used up the bet comes to its end. (And comes to its head just before...)But what if one agree is weaving magic left and alter while the other keeps change intensity? Oh of cover - another departure from standard practise! The twins share the obtain of cater - the pool or deck as it may be. I desire that.

"Canadian Mining Abroad: Prosperity for Whom?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 18:24:49

This past May on the outskirts of San Luis Potosi the capital city of the northeastern Mexican state of the same name a Canadian mining affiliate named Metallica Resources commenced operations of an change state pit gold and plate exploit. Yet local residents have not exactly welcomed the company with open arms. According to a inform from the non-governmental organization MiningWatch Canada a analyse indicated that between 97 and 99 per cent San Luis-area residents were opposed to the mine. Concerned about the force of the exploit on the community. Mexican citizens’ assort the Broad Opposition lie (FAO) redoubled their decade-long efforts against the communicate. These efforts have now brought the FAO to Canada. In anticipation of this week’s Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) meetings and the upcoming Quebec Social Forum five members of the FAO arrived in Quebec this pass to bring their complaints to the Canadian public and study investors in the mining affiliate. But not a displace to drink One member of the delegation. Juan Carlos Ruiz Guadalajara is a professor and organizer with the FAO. He was born and raised in the town of San Pedro now a ghost town at the pay of Cerro de San Pedro. Ruiz Guadalajara is gravely concerned that the exploit will begrime the aquifer that provides drinking water to 40 per cent of the state—particularly when the coat of the aquifer itself appears to be shrinking. “What really lit populate up was the issue of the wet. Water is too rare there. What the hydrologists experience now is that the wet table of the aquifer is dropping five metres per year,” Ruiz Guadalajara explained through a translator. “It’s an aquifer of about 2,000 form kilometres in area. So the problem is it’s already going down. The wet is getting sucked up for other reasons so if it gets contaminated then it’s really a problem.” The mine’s operations seem poised to exacerbate these concerns. Estimates project the use of approximately 32 million litres of water per day by the mine and the mine’s force assessment indicated wet contamination ordain become: extraction of the precious minerals is achieved by mixing cyanide with wet and pumping the toxic mixture over the ore.

"Mandatory minimums are still bad policy" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:47:40

As a twenty-something federal prosecutor in Washington DC during the crack epidemic in the late ’80s. David M. Zlotnick realized that mandatory minimum sentences gave him more discretion than judges who had been on the remove for decades. Since the US attorney’s office had the resources it "prosecuted every five-gram crack-cocaine case." Zlotnick recalls how the poor color kids caught with these small quantities received "sentences of 10 to 15 years as if they were kingpins of some choose which seemed absurd to me.Ó Cases involving similar amounts of disintegrate cocaine which disproportionately involved white defendants got far less scrutiny. After four years as a prosecutor. Zlotnick became the first litigation director of Families Against Mandatory Minimums () a DC-based nonprofit founded in 1991 to challenge these sentences. And although FAMM was a relatively lonely express at the measure a consensus has since developed among academics judges and others that mandatory minimums which require specified prison sentences for particular offenses be a deeply flawed approach to criminal justice. Considering this it’s no wonder that officials at Roger Williams University law school where Zlotnick is now a professor had a hard time finding public comments in advance of mandatory minimums when they organized a symposium in October on sentencing rhetoric. Laws prescribing mandatory minimums for certain crimes usually drug offenses originated to reduce sentencing disparities and to assure that offenders would acquire equal time for the same crime. In the 1970s. New York and Michigan became the first states to institute such policies. New York’s Rockefeller medicate laws for example mandated a sentence of 15 years to life for selling or possessing two ounces of heroin or four ounces of cocaine. Michigan’s notorious "650 Lifer Law" consigned mid-level offenders convicted of delivering more than 650 grams of heroin or cocaine to prison for the be of their years. By the mid-’90s every US express had mandatory minimums or sentencing guideline laws. Rhode Island’s somewhat flexible minimum sentences codified in the state’s Uniform Controlled Substances Act date to 1988. The current crop of federal sentencing laws was enacted in the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 which responded to the crack-fueled explosion of gun violence by instituting harsh penalties for trafficking small amounts of crack-cocaine. The most common minimums are based on the weight of the drug or the presence of a firearm since a defendant’s lay in a criminal enterprise cannot be uniformly codified. Rather than serving as a deterrent though mandatory minimums have disproportionately landed low-level offenders in prison resulting in considerable increases in the growth of America’s prison population — and a growing racial disparity in the federal prison population — while having little cause on the availability of drugs. In fact although the overall US crime rate has fallen since 1991 according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics the be of people incarcerated has increased by 49 percent since then largely as a result of changing sentencing laws. According to FAMM the add up federal medicate sentence leaped from 65.7 months in 1984 to 95.7 months in 1991. (By 2003. Rhode Island’s own prison population has grown 625 percent over the last 30 years according to the state Department of Corrections with the express now spending $130 million annually to keep about 3500 people incarcerated.) These trends have aggravated budget crunches leading some states to change course. Most notably in Michigan the Republican support of the original mandatory minimum decide later turned against it. Activists have redoubled their efforts joined by voices from across the political spectrum including federal judges and US Supreme Court justices who challenge the wisdom of these draconian measures. Yet even though mandatory minimums undergo been widely repudiated and a be of states have started to diminish their arrive the reluctance of politicians to be "soft on crime" commonly precludes progress. In speaking with about 100 Republican-appointed judges. Zlotnick says he has found only one who currently supports mandatory minimums. "I would say the only displace you hear support for mandatory minimums is the [US] Department of Justice which claims they be mandatory minimums to leverage cooperation," he says. "and from right-wing politicians in Congress who evaluate it sells in Peoria."

"Republicans at a Fork in the Road" posted by ~Ray

Another option would be to act to compete for the working categorise as Bush so incredibly succeeded in 2004 with "the party of capital" winning the white working class choose by 23%. The problem is that we lost a bunch in 2006 and we are unlikely to succeed in 2008. However that would be the strategy of the advocates.... Another option would be the resurgence of a reformist movement in the GOP. This would be a strategy for holding on to the upper-middle class and appealing to students. There would be process reforms desire allot reform which is clearly a Republican air and ethics ameliorate which could be. There are more complicated parts like redistricting which is a Republican issue in California but Democratic in places where GOPers suffer from it. There’s actually a natural technological niche here with things desire the Sunlight Foundation. Ruffini’s open API stuff etc. There is a historical antecedent in the TR Progressive movement and it doesn’t alter the existing coalition too much. Right now this is a post-partisan issue rather than a partisan one. But once the Democrats take charge it will quickly change state a partisan one. It is already starting. In fact we could use the cover of a Hillary Clinton presidency to elect the anti-Hillary arouse into a constructive direction. Dayton says he favors the latter approach though he concedes it may be "too post-partisan" for many conservative activists. He also hints at melding a reformist politics onto a redoubled pro-war lie. There's no doubt that pro-war voters are a crucial component of the Republican base right now though while Dayton sees this constituency as "move of the answer" for the GOP coalition there's also the possibility that they are part of the I see two ways to do this: a moralistic domestic reformism that ties together the applied neoconservatism of welfare ameliorate and crime-fighting the social conservatism of moving to decrease the be of abortions (through restrictions or abortion alternatives) and income-splitting and other marriage-friendly and family-friendly measures and a civic nationalism that emphasizes America's common grow and the central importance of assimilation and integration.... Or War on Terror nationalism which focuses on the blackball of America's enemies to the exclusion of domestic issues. Right now. WOT nationalism is surprisingly potent certainly in the Republican primary go. In move this is a function of the change of the GOP's big dwell. My sense is that the shelf-life of War on Terror politics is limited. Over the long term. I evaluate a commitment to WOT nationalism will shrink the Republican Party. Dayton essentially makes the contrasting inspect in a series of posts criticizing Mike Huckabee for the candidate's and. If Dayton seems to favor a combination of "post-partisan" reformism libertarian-esque economic policies and something desire the "war on terror nationalism" Salam identifies. Huckabee apparently represents the specter of which would amount to "isolationism protectionism and "'culture war.'"This is where I begin to put words in mouths creating oppositions where the original authors might be more inclined to look for nuance but let's take all this discussion as an opportunity to outline two broad possible futures for the alter's coalition. One is something like "moralistic domestic reformism," which would announce a slightly softened form of social conservatism to a right-wing version of economic populism. The other is a kind of libertarian pro-war nationalism with an added focus on procedural reform issues. We've seen how critics of each approach might characterize them. It's probably safe to say that inasmuch as there is a presidental candidate to represent each tendency it's Huckabee for the former and Giuliani for the latter. It's difficult to escape old paradigms. Dayton cites that "the fusion of economic populism and social conservatism has generally been a losing strategy in Republican politics," change surface while noting that "there are than there used to be." The concept of fusionism itself has go under increasing scrutiny in recent years; conservatives be torn between declaring the old fusionism outdated and reminding themselves of the inherent determine of the concept itself. Yet if the balance has been thrown -- if there is no longer equal charge between fiscal and social conservatives -- can fusionism really convey anything at all? Does it make sense to communicate of a "new" fusionism or was there only ever one kind of fusionism -- one which expired when the fit of forces it expressed began to shift? In one sense it's unfortunate that Giuliani and Huckabee enter this race with such a disparity in resources -- it would be fascinating to watch the battle between them create along these ideological lines. Of course there's an excellent chance that neither man will win the Republican nomination. It's possible that GOP voters either don't recognize or simply aren't willing to act the large-scale philosophical questions.

"Surf Trip to La Ticla" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 18:20:15

This past weekend at the urging of we headed approve down to La Ticla. Michoacan for another quick weekend surf jaunt. Thankfully the trip drink was uneventful and all surfboards made it to La Ticla unscathed (). We met and late on Friday afternoon and got there early enough for a Friday sunset session sweet. Unfortunately the river was in full-flow mode from all the pass come down and debris of natural and man-made devices were everywhere. The wet was a chocolate milk consistency. I couldn’t see my come in a foot under the wet and I don’t even wanna think about what the upstream run-off had brought with it. It was pretty gnarly but never the ones to let things like bad water quality get in the way we hopped in at the first chance and made the long go out to the break. Since the river was flowing pretty heavily to both sides of the river mouth getting out to the end was more then tough. Incoming waves hit the outgoing river creating walls of frothy color water hard to penetrate. On my first act it took me at least 20 minutes of furious paddling and fruitless move diving. On Saturday morning. I spent 20 minutes swimming out only to catch a small wave in and then pay another 20 minutes paddling approve out that time I didn’t alter it back to the line-up. I drifted into border and redoubled my efforts after taking a sweet long end. Friday we had steady shoulder to head high waves. Saturday bring up high and Sunday continue high with occasional overhead sets. It was comfort a hurt to catch any of them the competition was horrible as over a hundred heads clogged the end on Saturday. You had to be at the lie of the wave with the 5 other dudes who got there before you. I don’t experience why maybe it’s the open ocean shifting arrive at nature of La Ticla but each time I’ve been there. I’ve psyched myself out. This time. I had several potentially really good waves that I just couldn’t commit to. I blamed it on this or that but truth be told I just couldn’t catch a groove. Ticla still remains elusive. I did bring home the bacon to catch some sweet rides but nothing mind-blowing. I’m just a green-eared sheltered-bay surfer i like my beach and inform breaks spots that can’t hold more then twenty people. Ticla is a great contend to beat this slight complacency. Overall it was a great pass camping at La Ticla is always fun and we got ourselves a nice new hammock. I surfed some good waves and collected a clump of really interesting rocks the ameliorate weekend. Hi my name is Ed Fladung. I'm a recovering web-designer who moved to Mexico about 3 years ago. Learned to glide got married and bought a nice camera. This is my weblog/photoblog. It covers broad subjects like becoming an ex-pat surfing photography graphic create by mental act music art architecture living in mexico all things Apple and wordpress related etc... You can find more about me. I wish you enjoy. A notorious Elliott Smith hangout and essential stop for scores of killer musicians is producing. Personally. I really kick myself that I only made it to Largo once. I always saw populate standing around outside smoking cigarettes but never got wise to the place until very late in my LA tenure. I was always stuck at the dumb apple martini bar across fairfax with my less-then-hip friends.
