"Future Expansions - The Lord of the Rings Online? Forums" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-29 14:18:57

Since as I assume and without any "inside" knowledge. "The Devs" begin to construct expansion (both free and paid) many months before it is announced to the public here are my two cents about future expansions! My point here is to "get my voice heard" before it becomes a fair accompli. Now if the devs completely ignore my hopes and dreams well that is the way of things as the game is not made for me personally. Also. I am completely dieregarding the realities of time money and technology. Thus my "hopes and dreams" may be completly impossible!1) The Lonely Mouintain. Should be huge and we should be able to run around the durn thing--no sticking it up agains a zone wall!2) Mirkwood. This durn thing is huge. I would want the entire plant in-game and about the size of Eriador with the entire area playable. Now. I know this one is nuts!3) Rohan. An Iconic Region. Needs to be big not Bree to Shire big but Forochel big--if not larger. Try to avoid the "funnel" conclude of the lonelands. This is needed to give the land of the Rhoirrim the proper epic conclude. It it takes just a few minutes to go from Edoras to Helms Deep it just wont feel right.4) Helms Deep. Ditto above. Needs to be an open area (not an instance) that anyone can get to. Needs to be fully explorable. I would imagine it will be a quest hub. 5) Southfarthing. You guys gotta put this in-game before it is all over!6) Minas Tirith. This one will be a challenge. It must be huge many times the size of Bree. advance the hold to the Great River from the city again must be more than a few steps.7) Rauros: I know the devs ordain do that one up alter!8) Fangorn. No opinion on that one.9) Mordor. No opinion. After Angmar. I dont want to go to Mordor!!My main points is land-mass size with epic feel--again. Forochel was fairly good about that. Anyone else with opinions? Fire away but let us avoid the "Turbine exceed do this or I quit!!"8)I admit that my ideas may be unworkable but one can put one's two cents in! I say bravo to the animate of your affix regardless of whether it's possible or not. The common thread in them seems to be the desire for expansiveness a feeling that the current world is too small and miniaturized. Many of us had that impression when the bet launched and I still have it now but I accept it. If they were to go away stretching zones now though. I wonder if it might somehow distort the proportions a little too much as regards to the scale but frankly I wouldn't complain. I had a personal hope that someday Forodwaith would be in the game and I'd be it to be a huge barren wasteland much like Forochel but larger. Rip As the game continues to move southwards. I think they'll have little choice but to abandon the "boxed in" conclude of certain areas (like Angmar the Lonelands etc). Eregion is a step in the right direction. After the sign displace from the Trollshaws the entire zone is change state. We be more zones that flow together and less zones that are boxed in and funnel you into the next zone. I would love to see the expanse from Isengard to Mordor one open continuous plain (with some align trips and more funneled areas on the side as per the lore (The Path of the Dead etc). One thing I forgot to add is that I always wanted to see the Argonath in the game. I can't wait to see that. How will Turbine make them look? I hope they won't simply be carbon copies of the King's Bridge statue in Evendim just with an arm upraised. I want them to be larger and carved from stone like statues. I also hope that by that time we'll have boats such as canoes with which we can paddle past the Argonath on our way south. Imagination ftw. Rip To be honest with you. I hope they open up all the areas with in Middle-earth. (even the ones that have very little info on them) I share your desire to see those places you listed too! Not to shatter your dreams but I've no doubt that Turbine already has the future of LOTRO roughly mapped out for at least 2-3 years/expansions in advance. In fact. I wouldn't be suprised at all of some of the very initial bring home the bacon (concept art and so on) has already started for the next expansion. It's just the way companies like that tend to work especially with a game like LOTRO which everyone expects to be around for the long haul (and all of us definetly want to see as much of Middle Earth as possible in the game). Merad Warhammer. L50 R3 head (semi-ret) / Merawen. L50 Minstrel / Meradori. L38+ Hunter / Meraden. L45+ Guardian / Merali. L19+ Burglar / Meradoci. L39+ WardenLugnatz. R4 Warg / Griluk. R4 WLExtra Crispy - Gladden Not to shatter your dreams but I've no doubt that Turbine already has the future of LOTRO roughly mapped out for at least 2-3 years/expansions in advance. In fact. I wouldn't be suprised at all of some of the very initial work (concept art and so on) has already started for the next expansion. It's just the way companies like that tend to work especially with a game like LOTRO which everyone expects to be around for the desire haul (and all of us definetly want to see as much of Middle Earth as possible in the game). This isn't necessarily adjust. I remember discussions about Moria just this past summer (2-3 months ago) and the developers were saying that they were still taking player feedback and able to change things if needed. Yes they probably do have a rough idea of what ordain be put in the game and when but that certainly doesn't convey they have everything written in stone 2-3 years ahead of time. Not by any means. If something desire the OP's ideas can't be in the bet it'll be because it's not possible for gameplay or technical reasons -- not because they've already decided to do otherwise. Rip I think it is pretty well understood that there will only be 4 more expansions. I seem to recall some of the Devs saying that they want to release an expansion about every year that will cover 1/2 of one of the LotR books. The Mines of Moria expansion introduces us to the 2nd half of the Fellowship of the go. I believe that areas around Lothlorien like Mirkwood the Argonoth and perhaps as far north as the Lonely Mountain as come up as some filler areas like the Southfarthing and maybe the Grey Havens will be given to us as part of the free content updates over the coming year. I see the next expansion introducing us to Rohan by giving us Fangorn. Isengard and Edoras. Future areas in and around Rohan like Dunharrow and Helms Deep will be filled in with the next expansion pack as well as possibly Emyn Muil and the Dead Marshes. The 5th expansion will inform us to Gondor for the first time. I see this expansion as the biggest of them all with the creation of Minas Tirith. Osgiliath and Minas Morgol. Areas in southern Gondor like Belfalas and Dol Amroth will most likely be released as remove content over the continue of that year. Finally the epic jaunt of LOTRO will end with the 6th expansion that will give us Mordor. We will see the Black Gates. Barad Dur and Mount Doom. Since the game has really reached a climax by this inform. I anticipate LOTRO moving to a raiding-based end-game. There will be many max aim instances that can be run repeatedly to keep players busy and act them paying the monthly fee. There may be a few future free content updates adding new instances and filling in the forgotten smaller areas in the North. I can't seem to figure out how Turbine will show the "Scouring of the Shire". Maybe the Shire will be instanced much desire the Introduction and the Gates of Moria. I see the end of LOTRO coming in about 5 years (1 year after the final expansion) however. Turbine could surprise us by adding some new content and quests related to the reuniting of the Kingdoms and the decrease extermination of the evil remnants of Sauron or simply by releasing an expansion every two years instead of every year. Only time will tell. Not to shatter your dreams but I've no doubt that Turbine already has the future of LOTRO roughly mapped out for at least 2-3 years/expansions in advance. In fact. I wouldn't be suprised at all of some of the very sign work (concept art and so on) has already started for the next expansion. It's just the way companies desire that tend to work especially with a bet like LOTRO which everyone expects to be around for the long draw (and all of us definetly want to see as much of Middle Earth as possible in the game). On the other hand. Turbine DOES listen to our suggestions. And they're not averse to putting new cram into already developed regions. Back in AC2 somebody suggested "Why can't we have a portal skill to each of the [three] continental hubs?" And lo a few months later there they were -- and you got the tie to the given continental Nexus after you had done all the Vaults (major important Lore sites) on that continent. As mentioned upthread. Eregion is very large. Moria is HUGE a multi-leveled cavern with practically no portals it's one huge dungeon. Turbine is well capable of thinking BIG. The inside of the Lone Mountain won't be as big as Moria but it'll be big. Say as big as Goblin-Town which I personally have never fully explored yet? I evaluate the River Running and the Long Lake will be. I guess about the size of the Baranduin and Lake Evendim and you ordain get to complain some more about how long you have to swim. And I'm hoping that we will get a look at the Silvan Elves' cavern where Thranduil is king. I see the end of LOTRO coming in about 5 years (1 year after the final expansion) however. Turbine could surprise us by adding some new circumscribe and quests related to the reuniting of the Kingdoms and the slow extermination of the evil remnants of Sauron or simply by releasing an expansion every two years instead of every year. Only measure will tell. Don't drop that although Turbine's current contract with TE runs through 2012 they have options to grow it advance. I do not see the end of LotRO any measure soon. Remember that Asheron's Call is still running after ten years and one hundred (monthly) updates. As one who has experienced the epic expanses of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes I must say that the large spaces are only feasible if there is plenty of content included. Otherwise the only thing you get is that it takes a desire measure to get places. Just my two cents Pretty sure I read the Devs had no plans on letting players get into Mordor. Something to do with having a virtual sea of enemies over 10,000 strong waiting to attack Minas Tirith and sweep across Rhovanion it makes no sense to undergo 12 guys running in there thinking they could do. anything. Pure nonsense and the reason why the Fellowship knew in the end only a few could make it through Mordor to Mt. ordain. If anything it would be cool to see no way to get through the Black Gates and trying to storm Minas Morgul unleashing an unending horde of Orcs. Goblins and Trolls that eventually end a Raid's attempt at breaching Mordor. THE LORD OF THE RINGS ONLINE™: interactive video game © 2008 Turbine. Inc and patents pending. All rights reserved. "A Perfectly Rational Dog - require("patience.js")" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-29 14:18:53

require("patience js")I've updated with a require method to make dragging in it (and all the jQuery dependencies) easier. I also gave NJS a dressing-down so it's better able to inspect itself and factored out the test label from the main library. Most of the work actually happened the week of the 16th. I got most of this written nearing on the next pass and then crashed. The Javascript Dependency MessOne of the growing pains of a Javascript communicate is that there is no good way to convey dependencies. Earlier versions of NJS required a half dozen Javascript and CSS files in every HTML document that wanted to use it. A bring together times while working on the Javascript parser I would have liked to just open a window and browse things but I never got past the pain of sorting out all the extra files. Even CSS has it's @import directive but Javascript still hasn't grown up. Many JS libraries I've seen ship their production code as a single concatenated file which has bear witness of a parallel life as separate files for development. The Escape HatchFortunately as documented in several places throughout the web there does appear to be a hack in the wild that is reasonably effective. By the time the browser is executing Javascript it has enough of a document object model going that you can add new script elements to the page (or link elements for CSS) and the browser will execute them just as if they had been there from the beginning. A Fatal FlawUnfortunately you can't turn this into the kind of demand/include mechanism familiar in other languages. The problem is that the new script won't be executed until the current one finishes (at least - there might also be network delays). So each register can't name it's own dependancies. You still have to have one file that lists everything in order. The only improvement is that you can take that one register and re-use it in multiple pages with a single script statement in each. A possible work-around would be put the entire rest of the contents of the file in a answer to be executed after the dependencies have loaded. Often times it's in a function anyway to establish a private scope. However this was too large an force on the source files (and on obtain file) for me to stomach so I had to go. Creeping FeaturismThe example routines for doing this were a mere half-dozen lines or so but you needed one for Javascript and one for CSS. So the first thing I did was set it up to act the allot element type based on the mime type. From there it was a short extension to automatic detection based on extension. Relatively EasyI have a nasty set of opposing desires: I like small directories with few entries so that I can actually sight things and I dislike specifying long paths - especially over and over again. So next up was giving my require a directory context so that I didn't have to repeat myself. In isolation this worked fairly well. Relatively HardRecall that my use case was to easily pull NakedJS into the parser project hopefully without having to copy it's great eat of files (addition to not having to enumerate them all) Heres the problem: script element paths are all relative to the base document. All those requires in the NJS manifest file would compose paths not in the parser file tree. I thought that the path scoping would solve this easily enough. I was wrong. The manifest file (njs js) is Javascript code. It executes when it's loaded. In request to set up a path context it has to be executed by Javascript label using the require mechanism. Recall the part about new scripts not be executed until the current code stops. By the time the NJS code started running the path stack had been unwound and evaporated. File not found. Essentially you can't pass information to the script. Well. I suppose you use some kind of rendezvous on an object property but not only does that appear messy. I just thought of it now and that didn't do me any good a few days ago ;^) So your script is starting over nearly from scratch. Fortunately since you can add script elements you can also list the existing ones. Conveniently these have their beat path rather than the relative one they probably started with. So for the price of having the manifest compose search for itself you can figure out the difference between it's expected relative path and it's actual full path and then specify a beat path for the new scripts. Whats in a Name? -or- My Own Private DLL HellOne of the purposes of implementing 'demand' as opposed to 'include' was to catch multiple dependencies. That got mostly deflated when I had to use the single big manifest for each package but there are comfort cases where it comes - such as when the parser imported Naked Javascript. The current parser-test runs it's test code immediately from the script file. Yes this by itself probably needs to be fixed some measure. Since the DOM isn't fully up and running yet the results of the tests are stored in an arrange until everything is ready and then de-spooled into a div to make them visible. When I added NJS this all disappeared. NJS was re-loading the correct module and re-initializing the stored messages to an empty array. Why? because ".../naked/compose/cgd/debug js" != ".../parse/script/cgd/correct js"Identity CrisisSo what is the identity of a file? I'm not handling the files myself (just their paths) so circumscribe hashes are out. You could say it's the filename (debug js) but then why reach having directories at all? You also can't have similar files in different subdirectories. If you use the full path the names comfort don't match and you load the register twice. Having two similar files still raises the version incompatibility problem but at least doing it once prevents you from wiping out data. I've settled on the 'canonical relative path' in this case "script/cgd/debug js" In short. I've come to undergo a certain appreciation for why Java adopted the "com." convention. Who's Surprised? As usual IE breaks. It's creating the script elements but when one loads it's missing a dependency. Perhaps they're out of request? I'm going to have to spend some off-time at work to evaluate it out. Edit: I just tried it in IE again things worked fine (well as fine as they used to...) perhaps the old and new versions were getting mixed up due to caching?Naked Javascript Gets the Dressing DownAfter getting require working (in Firefox. Safari and Opera) I cleaned up Naked Javascript a bit. One of the things I realized after developing NJS is that a lot of my code wouldn't show very much in. The obvious place to start is NJS itself. Most of it was already in one one 'class' so fortunately there were no drastic changes required. There were a few other little improvements such as printing something when the toString method returns a keep arrange. Leaving HomeOne of the larger transformations was splitting out the test code. Formally loading the Naked Javascript module opened it's evaluate dialogs. This code had to be refactored and put into it's own file. The test data also got 'stripped' so that the test data and even jQuery extensions could be inspected. In some cases I had to alter some exceptions for items that can't be immediately initialized because they reference the DOM. No Clothes RequiredOf course. I had to go back and expose require itself for browsing.

Szerintem. Jaaaaajjjjj kisfiam hát én végig vittem a label of Duty World at War-t! "Poem for Thursday" posted by ~Ray

Through Rohan over fen and field where the long hit growsThe West Wind comes walking and about the walls it goes.‘What news from the West. O wandering go do you carry to me tonight?Have you seen Boromir the Tall by moon or by starlight?’‘I saw him go over seven streams over waters wide and color;I saw him walk in alter lands until he passed awayInto the shadows of the North. I saw him then no more. The North go may undergo heard the horn of the son of Denethor.’‘O Boromir! From the high walls westward I looked afar,But you came not from the empty lands where no men are.’ From the mouths of the Sea the South Wind flies from the sandhills and the stones; The wailing of the gulls it bears and at the furnish it moans.‘What news from the South. O sighing wind do you bring to me at eve?Where now is Boromir the bring together? He tarries and I grieve.’‘Ask not of me where he doth care — so many bones there lieOn the color shores and the dark shores under the stormy sky;So many have passed down Anduin to sight the flowing Sea. Ask of the North Wind news of them the North go sends to me!’‘O Boromir! Beyond the furnish the seaward road runs south,But you came not with the wailing gulls from the color sea’s mouth.’ From the Gate of Kings the North Wind rides and past the roaring falls; And clear and cold about the tower its loud pierce calls.‘What news from the North. O mighty wind do you carry to me today? What news of Boromir the Bold? For he is long away.’‘Beneath Amon Hen I heard his cry. There many foes he fought. His cloven shield his broken sword they to the water brought. His head so proud his face so fair his limbs they laid to rest; And Rauros golden Rauros-falls bore him upon its breast.’‘O Boromir! The Tower of Gaurd shall ever northward gazeTo Rauros golden Rauros-falls until the end of days.’ XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym call=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <have in mind> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q have in mind=""> <strike> <strong>

"Letter To Aspiring Game Designers" posted by ~Ray

Letter To Aspiring Game DesignersOne of my relatives has a son interested in game design. Though I'm not much involved. I've watched it enough to be able to give something of an answer:Unfortunately the company doesn't do many games anymore; those we have been done were coin-operated and often redemption (tickets; chuck-e-cheese write stuff)I presume by the involvement of software that you are referring to computer/video games. (I've also dabbled in come in games but very few populate are able to alter a career of it) I've watched the industry a bit at times but never really been involved in it. What aspect is interested in? There is programming art appear production and even 'design' is specializing into story/writing and mechanics (possible called 'game design') Aiming smaller at the casual/web/downloadable market might be an environment were multiple talents would be more common. Things may have completely changed by the time he's making a living on it but that could be a place to start now. There are a few game development schools - just don't misidentify development with create by mental act. Develop is the whole thing (programming/art/etc.) and very often their mark of 'create by mental act' is write up a design enter and then a bunch of populate go create that whether or not it's good. Mostly I speculate; I've no personal undergo and they may undergo much brighter people than I give them credit for - just make sure they are offering what you want if looking in that direction. Otherwise the question of schools comes back to the area he is interested in. For adjust game create by mental act (which I should have in mind is a comprehend gig to get) liberal arts may actually be the best bet. See the book Rules of compete (below) for an idea of the breadth required. I haven't looked into tools lately. I ran across Squeak EToys recently; it's designed as a first introduction to programming in an interactive environment. Beyond that. I'd recommend finding a game framework for a dynamic language such as Python or Ruby; I also accept there is a DarkBasic that is focused on games. Resources: - web site tied in with a publish of game industry magazines and such (you could also subscribe to bet Developer magazine I suppose) News articles on various topics in create by mental act programming and trends. - my game create by mental act bookmarks; some are related to board games or weird abstract things about the 'meaning' of games and suchlike. Books:A Theory of Fun (Raph Koster) - fairly light essay on fun; illustrated. Rules of Play (Katie Salen/Eric ZImmerman) - a textbook of game create by mental act but in a broad sense - includes board and playground games in addition to computer. Patterns in bet Design (Staffan Bjork/Jussi Holopainen) - more focused on computer games but a little dry and perhaps not the best starter book. Chris Crawford has written a couple of books; I believe The Art of Computer bet create by mental act is available for remove online along with a lot of other writings. Just be aware with respect to breaking into 'The Industry'. Chris checked out of it a while ago and many of his writings have in mind to a bygone age.
