With a Jan. 11 kick-off set the Tallahassee Urban unify come in of directors and staff members undergo already raised more than $126,000 toward a goal of $500,000 for its 2008-2009 Capital Campaign.
The Rev. Ernest Ferrell president and CEO of the local Urban League chapter said that while the campaign doesn’t officially go away until after the new year come in members and staff already are exceeding their own expectations with change amounts and pledges.
The campaign is expected to run from January 2008 to May 2009 in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Tallahassee chapter. A reception Nov. 29 gave members a chance to make their financial commitments. come in chairman attorney Thomas Brown of Brown and Brown Law Firm according to a touch release said. “That before we ask the community to fling in and back up we must show the community where the board stands and how committed we are.” And that’s exactly what happened. Brown presented a $5,000 check from himself and family members and an additional $5,000. Attorney Daryl Parks of Parks and Crump Law Firm also pledged $10,000. In addition. Ferrell pledged $10,000 and gave $3,500 as an initial deposit toward his assure. Vice-President Curtis Taylor agreed to a $5,000 pledge. Executive Vice-President Leslie Gay pledged $2,500. Co-chair Dean Henry Lewis III who was absent sent a representative to the meeting with a $7,500 pledge. The staff total reached $26,000. The remaining 23 members of the board were committed through their own individual effort to raise $5,000 each. The Urban League also received contributions from numerous other non-board and staff supporters totaling nearly $51,000. Ferrell said the $100,000 goal that evening was come up exceeded. “We’re pretty confidant that we can cater the $500,000 and exceed that goal.”Ferrell said from now until Jan. 11 the Urban League will be in its planning stages. The group is working to build a football-oriented theme to open the kick-off. Board members will build campaign teams made up of five populate. In addition staff members will act their own teams.“We’re hoping to have at least 500 people at the kick-off," he said.
