"Citadel piles on E*Trade" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 02:37:22

And while it goes on to tout Citadel’s incredible returns from buying up distressed assets as the big sign to move on the bandwagon there’s probably more reason to be cautious than to go away accumulating the financials. There are two simple reasons for this. Citadel invests in very specific asset classes (i e natural gas derivatives with Amaranth and credit spreads with ) when doing these distressed buys. Second the transactions are being consummated at enormous discounts. E*change has had specific trouble related to sub-prime assets on their books and Citadel has done their due diligence - they know precisely what they are getting including but not limited to what if any off-balance pelt items might be lurking around. And they have the capital to persuade. Many banks and broker/dealers still don’t experience what their true exposure is to and CDOs what or what. There are comfort a ton more sub-prime mortgages as well as Alt-A and Jumbo classes and questions are mouth to arise regarding the creditworthiness of and. All those issues ordain fall on…you guessed it…the banks and brokerages. Unless you’re Citadel you’d be wise to sit tight. modify: Paul Kedrosky has more in-depth commentary on the deal and. modify 2: Discount on the troubled portfolio was. Try getting that in the everymans’ marketplace.

"Seven things meme" posted by ~Ray

'Those who pay the greater move of their measure in reading or writing books are of course apt to take rather particular notice of accumulations of books when they come across them. They ordain not pass a stall a shop or even a bedroom-shelf without reading some title and if they find themselves in an unfamiliar library no host need affect himself further about their entertainment.' A Neighbour's Landmark. M R James I've picked this meme up from and I've seen it on a few other people's pages and thought I'd furnish it a go. Mainly. I must adjudge because I am feeling a bit uninspired about what to write at the moment. I have had a cold for the past week and a half which has knocked my hearing funny so I'm spending most of my measure when I'm not at work resting on the sofa in lie of Columbo - very nice but not conducive to reading things to write about here. So - seven random or weird things about me:1 - The thing that makes this list a bit of a problem: I undergo very little shame and generally will express most populate just about anything about myself as I don't particularly care about appearances. For instance although you'd evaluate a thirty-five year old woman might keep it quiet at work that she plays World of Warcraft to preserve her professionalism most of my colleagues know about my other life and pity me accordingly. So it is difficult to think of things that aren't too personal for this meme that I won't have already shared here over the past few months.2- I fell in love with Dirk Bogarde when I was fifteen and still conclude the same twenty years later. He was perfection.3 - I would rather miss a train than run for it. I do sometimes run for the train but always experience it afterwards whether I surprise it or not.4 - Two of my WoW avatars are named after characters from Sheridan Le Fanu stories: Maud (from Uncle Silas) and Carmilla from the story of the same label.5 - I have admitted before that I love Girls of the Playboy Mansion (US: Girls Next Door) - see what I convey about having no shame? But I haven't admitted that I have a favourite one of Heff's girlfriends. It's Holly - although Bridget and Kendra are great too.6 - I can't express left from right - I have to fasten my hands out in front of me and look at which hand my wedding go is on to experience which is which (before I got married I used my watch).7 - I once cut asleep through a production of Hamlet - I went to sleep in the scene in Gertrude's bedroom when I woke up everyone was dead. I was a first year student studying Theatre and was very tired. The beat bit was that I was sat a row in front of five of my tutors including the Head of Department! I've also fallen asleep during Les Miserables but that was because I was bored. On to anyone else! I'm not sure that I'm interesting enough to have seven things to tell about myself! Which are your favourite Columbo episodes? I particularly like one called 'The bye-bye sky high IQ murder inspect' and another about trained attack dogs which stars someone whose name I've suddenly forgotten. Your story about falling asleep in the theatre is a good one but not as good as my terrible tale of falling asleep during a instruct given by my impress! I snored very loudly and when I woke up he looked over at me and asked if I was working too hard. It's a great episode. It's sort of shocking to think that the actress playing John Cassavetes young wife. Blythe Danner was pregnant with her daughter Gwyneth Paltrow during the filming! Also strange to think that the actress playing his mother-in-law is Myrna Loy who played Nora Charles in the THIN MAN movies from the 1930's. Hard to believe that the Columbos were made that desire ago.

"Why people won't post stories about their piles?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:45:13

Posting stories to social health sites seems to be different to other types of place. And it’s not just that sharing the story of your haemorrhoid operation is qualitatively different to posting your holiday snaps of the Maldives to Flickr. Getting the fit between personal payoff and social benefit seems to be genuinely tougher for health-focused social sites. And I’m not sure we’ve got it right yet on Patient Opinion. People affix on the site out of be of motivations that include altruism anger and gratitude – so there is clearly some personal and emotional pay off and the telling of the story itself helps. But we haven’t yet hit the big measure – we may have had thousands of populate posting stories and rating services but we’re still a desire way from where we want to be. Interestingly we’re not alone – the feedback section of is currently only receiving 2 to 3 postings per day about the whole of the NHS in England. And commercial sites like fair little exceed. This US site aims to help populate who undergo experienced illness and disability overlap and organise their wisdom through structured ‘wisdom cards’ that say what was good and bad about a particular illness experience. A great idea but in the few months since they’ve launched they be to undergo only manage to create 403 wisdom cards (unless I’m misreading the place). So what would be the real motivator that would make people affix about their illness experience? The sites with the most hits be to be unmoderated and to mainly just furnish a way to evaluate and comment about individual professionals by label. This produces both good and bad comments but in my view (and here I’m influenced by my own experience as a family physician) the motivation to both appraise and libel your own personal adulterate is often driven by fairly deep needs – we all tend to see our doctor as a bulwark against death. Or to resent the actual or perceived cater that we have surrendered to them and hence to tell atrocity stories about them. (I know this isn’t always adjust but I do think it happens a lot). So pure personal feedback is I think a lot less informative than people think its gong to be. Which is not to say that there won’t be quite a few successful sites that grow by giving people the chance to publicly appear off about their doctor – there ordain be? But unlocking the social value that lies above these bottom feeder sites is the key to creating a place that actually helps people live with the enduring distress of illness and disease. And no one has yet found the personal pay-off key that will unlock change surface a calculate of the millions of health interactions that happen each week in the UK.

"DNA backlog piles up for FBI (usatoday.com)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:32:16

The accumulate which expands monthly means most of the biological samples the bureau collects have not been stored in the national DNA database and used to understand crimes. DNA from 34,000 convicts has been added to the database since 2001 resulting in 600 matches to unsolved crimes according to statistics furnished by the Justice Department to the Senate Judiciary Committee. At the same rate the unloaded samples could help solve an additional 3,200 crimes. The backlog expanded by about 80,000 samples in 2006 when a law took cause requiring that all federal convicts rather than just violent felons submit DNA samples. A new law requiring DNA to be taken from about 500,000 federal arrestees and detainees could increase the accumulate. Rules for implementing that law are due early next year according to Office of Management and Budget documents. Justice provided the backlog data to the committee in July in response to questions posed to Attorney command Alberto Gonzales during an April appearance before the panel. Using different figures. FBI lab spokeswoman Ann Todd said in an telecommunicate that about 156,000 DNA samples about 78% of those collected have not been put in the database. She declined to comment on the discrepancy with the numbers from the Justice Department the FBI's parent organization. The lab processes about 5,500 samples a month. Todd said. The laboratory receives about 8,000 samples a month meaning the accumulate continues to grow. "It's embarrassing because it's the FBI which is supposed to be this powerful organization but it's not surprising," said Lawrence Kobilinsky biology professor and DNA specialist at John Jay College in New York City. "Across the nation backlogs are an ongoing problem a tragedy really but one that it looks like is going to be with us for awhile." Since 1998 the FBI has maintained a system that matches genetic profiles from criminals and in some states criminal suspects with DNA drawn from unsolved crimes. All 50 states and the FBI lab in Quantico. Va. maintain their own databases which are linked by computer software maintained by the FBI. Through May the national DNA database held 4.8 million criminal samples and DNA from about 178,000 unsolved crimes according to an FBI website. It had scored matches that assisted 50,343 investigations. The FBI's exacting testing standards caused the DNA "block," Deputy Assistant Attorney command Richard Hertling said in a letter to the committee. The FBI lab is studying an automated system that could cut evaluate times significantly he said.
