"Hannibal: Rome and Carthage in The Second Punic War 219-202 BC ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 20:24:28

touches:HANNIBAL: Rome and Carthage in The back up Punic War 219-202 B. C. One's first reaction to opening up the box of the 'Aulic Council' of NYC's strategic game of "Hannibal's" struggle with the Romans during the Second Punic War is to step approve and murmur: "pretty very pretty"The physical components of this game are exceedingly well-done. The map is a single hard-backed 17-X-22-inch board representing Italy. Sicily. Sardinia and North Africa. This territory is divided into areas for movement with the only terrain features being three types of cities and occasional mountain barriers. The counters displace silhouettes of a wide variety of troop types from: Numidians; Spaniards; and Gauls; right through to elephants. They are probably the most attractive of the bet as each project is distinctive and drawn with regard for historical accuracy. There is also a pack of cards for each player that allows various advantages and movement possibilities. These are the only drab components of the bet. No be how "pretty" a game is however it is the rules which make or break it. This set has been aimed firmly at playability and the use of simple concepts to create the right effects. Perhaps the most interesting idea is that of the "Senate". Before he moves each player must roll a die to see which areas of the board his "Senate" ordain allow him to operate in. This is more than an exercise in luck however as the die roll is modified by various player actions (such as minus one for each contend lost since the measure "Senate" meeting). Each player also holds a transfer of five or six cards some of which allow him to affect either his own or his opponent's "Senate". These cards generally undergo a second paragraph that allows the player to trade them in for additional troops instead of influencing the "Senate". This makes for some interesting separate compete (actually a game within a game) as you must end whether to take troops or modify one of the "Senates". I am not sure what these choices be historically but the certainly add *spice* to the game. The restrictions imposed by the "Senates" makes comprehend as for example the Romans should not be able to send troops to Africa until they have regained a strong lay in Italy. Movement is by Leader from area to area (within the "Senate" limitations). It is wise for troops to cross mountains through friendly cities otherwise attrition will decimate them. contend is done by rolling large numbers of dice. Each counter has printed on it how many dice it may turn and how many hits it can take. The cards can also influence combat in particular allowing "Hannibal" to pull Punic tricks like ambushes and surprise attacks. There are also 'Naval' and 'Siege' rules to go things out. Generally it is possible to journey anywhere that the "Senate" allows while cities are hard to capture. Victory depends on whether or not "Hannibal" can interpret Rome - a very difficult proposition. Historically. I'm not sure what to evaluate of this bet. There are some very interesting insights (like the "Senate's" rules) but the unwary could end up with some strange situations. As a game however it has a lot of promise. It is "pretty" simple to compete and has some interesting rules mechanisms. ---------------------------------------------- There you have it! At least something now of which to either already determine that this is a "game" YOU would like to remove within or take a "pass" for it all. This 'article' will undergo to fulfil until a more in depth kind can be produced and published here. As always then I DO accept

"Thursday's Game: WRG 6th Edition" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:43:02

Last night David ennoble and I refought the using David's 25mm figures and WRG 6th Edition Rules. This battle is interesting because it is one of the few times where Roman heavy infantry armed with Pilum faced the Macedonian pike phalanx in a pitched battle. In the contend. Antiochus III bring about the cavalry charge on the Seleucid right lie which annihilated the Roman left lie. Unfortunately. Antiochus charged off with his cavalry to steal the Roman camp leaving the be of his army to be destroyed by the Romans! We started the contend with a historical deployment which had each army split into three forces each under a general. The Roman general. Lucius Cornelius Scipio was accompanied by his uncle Scipio Africanus who had defeated Hannibal in Africa. The first turn saw the Romans advancing aggressively on the alter and in the centre while the let go order infantry on the left held approve. The Seleucids responded with a general go. The Numidians engaged one of the scythed chariots with javelins causing heavy casualties. The general advance continued in the back up move with the scythed chariots attempting to charge the Numidians and the Pergamene heavy cavalry. The scythed carry that had taken casualties failed its morale evaluate and refused to rush and was charged in turn by the Numidians. The Pergamene cavalry counter charged and managed to ensure that the scythed carry didn't get up enough speed to do any real damage. One chariot was destroyed and the other took 19 out of 2o casualties causing it to defeat. In move three the infantry in the displace all charged the Seleucid cavalry charged the slingers who evaded and pursued into the Aeotolian peltasts. The slower Agema cataphracts not being close enough to charge the Greeks yet continued to go. On the right the Italian cavalry charged the Kappadocian peltasts and the Kappadocian skirmishers tried to rush the rallying Pergemene heavy cavalry but failed and routed! The heavily armoured Seleucid cavalry had no affect breaking both units of Aeotolians on the left. In the displace the Romans managed to end the leftmost phalanx which was spread out in two ranks and thus more vulnerable. The elephant on the right was pushed back but the Seleucids won all the other combats and pushed approve most of the Roman infantry. In the fourth turn the Seleucid Agema charged and destroyed the Greek peltasts leaving Gracchus all alone with no troops! In the displace a desperate Philippos charged the unengaged Roman Triarii to prevent them from charging into the lie of the rightmost phalanx. The elephant that had been pushed back failed its morale evaluate for seeing the phalanx routing and joined in the defeat. The combat in the centre continued with one of the Roman units breaking but the be of the line holding. On the alter the Italian cavalry broke while the remaining Roman units positioned themselves for charges. Surrounded by cavalry the Peltasts formed a square around Seleucus. At this point we ran out of measure and had to label a displace. I think if we had continued the Romans would undergo been defeated. The contend in the displace could have gone either way at this point but the Seleucid heavy cavalry were now in a lay to start moving towards the displace and to hit the Romans in the lie. Philippos would have been almost certain to die in turn five as the Roman Triarii lapped around onto both flanks but his sacrifice prevented the lie rush which would undergo rolled up and destroyed the Seleucid displace.

"Unintended Consequences" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:28:46

Like many mods it aims for realism before anything else change surface to the point of giving each faction an overly “correct” name. Greeks for example are the Koinon Hellenon. The “rebel” controlled cities are given the somewhat anachronistic name of Eleutheroi - a call properly used for independent Greek cities not Numidians. Celts and Germans. The mod is veryy good. Costs are increased so it’s harder to regenerate decimated armies. Instead of a single Roman military reform there is a series of them and the reforms change not only unit types but which units can be built in which territories. You won’t be raising legions in 3rd century BC Qart-Hadsasht/Carthage for example. For those of you complained about the go of ’s battles those in EB act at a slower pace. There is enough money to do a few big things each turn but you won’t be rolling in cash until you have a sizeable empire. And there are a lot more pacifying buildings to decrease squalor unrest and other things that made vanilla First custom battles. I love doing custom battles. Set up the Egyptians against the Pontines and see whose chariots win out. But in EB the custom contend menu has every conceivable unit in the menu. If I be to have a Roman army it’s very difficult to pick out the legions I want in the eat of mercenaries. Gallic swordsmen and Greek peltasts. If I disarrange the army there’s a good chance it will spend the create verbally on non-Roman troops because in certain cities in the campaign. Rome will be on local troops. I still don’t know what a good create verbally level is either. With the default 10000 bucks you’ll be lucky to get a command and three of his friends. But this is a minor thing. EB is a campaign mod and the wide range of available units will alter it easier to get the right fit in historical battles. I still have vanilla installed somewhere so if I need a rapid contend fix that’ll do. A more serious unintended consequence is the AI’s new reluctance to take on the independent cities. Each of these cities starts with a good sized defense force big enough that it’s entirely possible you will take two cracks at conquering it unless you show up with overwhelming power. In vanilla Rome the independent cities were defended by enough soldiers to require an effort but not so strong that the AI controlled factions won’t evaluate about expanding at their expense. But if you give the independent cities too many troops they change state a very risky proposition for the AI. Enemy factions ordain happily say war on you - that’s their job. But by being overly cautious in attacking the independent cities. EB’s Gauls or Germans or Macedonians are at a serious disadvantage. You can easily use the independents as a buffer zone - these cities never contend you and the AI isn’t going to go through them. So instead of facing the annoying but fit inducing multi-front wars you can plan your expansion carefully with minimal threat from an unexpected accommodate. From a pure historical standpoint I anticipate this makes some sense. For most of the late Republican period the Mediterranean was dotted with small independent kingdoms and city states. To prevent the entire region from becoming a monochromatic blob you need to furnish these cities a chance to defeat. But the cumulative cause is to neuter the enemy factions. Every city that they do not check is one more you can conquer and sack every route they adjudicate too dangerous is one more you don’t have to watch. If you play as Rome the game tends to develop in a quasi-historical way. Since no faction is really a threat until you are on their doorstep you consolidate your direct on Italy move into Etruria and Sicily and end up look to nose with the Gauls (here divided into two compete factions) and Carthage. Then you end up in one or two major wars. But there is also a sense of inevitability here that goes against the grain of bet design. No the AI in the be War games never really poses much of a desire term contend but it could frustrate or decelerate you. In EB there is little sense that your enemies are change surface playing the same grow. Exploit and kill game that you are. It’s a tougher opponent on the battlefield (Because some units just won’t break. Stupid naked Gauls.) but weaker on the map since it would rather contend a strongpoint of yours than one of a rich independent city desire Syracuse. None of this by the way takes away from the major accomplishment that EB is. It has new models new loading screens new traits a new map…it’s huge and come up worth the download. And since it is a fan communicate will probably be improved as it moves send. Even with my misgivings. I thank the developers for reviving my arouse in one of my favorite games of recent years. Ain’t it always the way: you tweak the bet this way and it bulges that way and you avoid with this and add that and it’s.

"Themes & Periods" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 18:15:27

It's a blatant steal of a thread from the Grimsby Wargamer; but a very good one and opportune too as I'm in the middle of rationalising my collections and storing what I'm actually going to act. My gaming interests are pretty broad so here goes with a full listing of what and why... Ancients:come up. I'd split this into three periods really. Biblical. Classical and Imperial. In Biblical terms I have a 15mm New Kingdom Egyptian army fully painted and based for DBM. An opposing Phillistine army awaits attention. In the Classical period I have Selucids. Thracians. Maccabean to Revolt Jewish. Etruscans and Early Republican Romans in 20mm to DBM strengths. In boxes sit another Successor Greek army and a Campanian (southern Italiot) army awaiting building. Then There is also my oh so nearly finished 28mm Spartans - 2000 points of WAB army; and a pair of 6mm DBA armies - Republican Romans and Numidians. Lastly for the Imperial period I have a massive Early Imperial Roman army and a huge Celtic force in 20mm. 'Ancients ' are certainly some of my favourites to bring home the bacon with and chew over. Medievals:Formally this is three periods too for me; Early Medieval (what we used to call the dark ages). High Medieval - from about 1100 to 1400 and the late medieval from about 1400 to 1550. Inside these realms is the bulk of my 25-28mm collections. Starting with a 25mm Eastern Frankish (Ottonian) army mainly painted badly some 20 years ago. Then a rather nicer 28mm Viking army. Both around the DBM size of 200+ figures. Into the high meds and I undergo three large armies; all fairly recently painted and in 28mm: English. French and Flemish (Low Countries). The beauty of these is the number of other armies you can bring together between them; all told they total about 700 figures. The later period never really interested me; so is not covered; but that aside I like both the classic Hollywood 'shining equip and skintight irrigate' versions and the more accurate 'grimy' historical look and feel of the middle ages. Renaissance:I anticipate this is 1550 to 1700 or so. I can count on my 15mm English Civil War armies in this area. But I also undergo that damn arrange of 500+ plastic samurai to get dealt with one day. My interests in this period are more limited and the Samurai are to be honest more medieval than their go out implies. cater and Musket:Or 1700 to 1865 or so. Not an area I've really got into and it's all drink to the uniforms! I've dabbled in the past but really painting piping and braids has always left me in the playing with other populate's toys category on this period. Colonial:I like the movie 'Zulu'; it had a stirring influence on me as a child. As a consequence there are 200 15mm Zulus and about fifty British infantry painted in boxes somewhere. Uniforms were the undoing of me here; even in 15mm I found painting British infantry a chore. One day I'll finish the be and then we'll see... Early Modern:1900 to 1939: Really no interest. Plus I always open the idea of gaming WW1 a bit iffy. Modern:WW2 onwards. So many! For WW2 alone I undergo a large US armoured infantry force and store affiliate in 20mm. An Italian force for Tunisia and Sicily. Normandy/Italy period Germans a small Japanese force too - all in 20mm and painted. Then there's the 28mm German and American platoon sized forces with a dozen vehicles each or so. Then of course there's the Axis and Allies ships - about 70 vessels now. World War Two was where it all started for me as a boy growing up in the seventies it was in the movies and books(and let's not drop 'contend' magazine) constantly. After WW2 there's Korea in 20mm with large Chinese and American forces. Then there's Africa in 15mm with 3 generic African armies and a UN compel to cover 1970-2000. Lastly there's the Yugoslavian Civil Wars in 20mm - Croats. Serbs and a sprinkling of Bosnians. Some years ago I made a decision to forbid doing anything current and drew an arbitrary line at the year 2000. As discussed in the past. I've had issues about taste when it comes to making a bet of the Gulf war and other current conflicts; To be honest the Yugoslav wars are something I have to address very cautiously so as not to anger players observers; or myself for that matter. Sci-Fi:Um that'll be 40K then; Orks. Eldar and Space Marines in 1500+ point forces. Those aside there's Epic measure forces for four armies hold on painted too. 40K is a safety game you always know you can find an opponent somewhere... conceive of:More Warhammer; more Orcs. 300 or so of them and their Goblin chums. Additionally I undergo my Vampire counts army and an as yet unpainted Dwarf army looking to be a pass diversion. I accuse Lord of the Rings for all my fantasy and roleplay gaming weaknesses.

"MNM: No Naval base for Numidia?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:12:58

Imperator & Metro Naval Imperator mod is a Roman race mods base on Rome Total Realism and is intended to alter Roman Faction campaign harder featuring name and numbered Legions. Metro-Naval is the combination of Metropolis Mod and also Naval Mods for RTR 6 Gold and upgraded for RTR Platinum Edition. I'll start with the beginning which was me starting up a Numidian campaign. Rushed Carthage conquered nearly all of their North-African provinces till an unexplainable crash right after clicking the end-turn add devastated me. I spent several hours searching on the forums applying every single thing I open to try and deliver my game but nothing helped. Finally did a complete re-install and rendered all my savegames useless as I had forgotten to copy over some files which I had altered without remembering the exact specifications. So I thought that having re-installed everything might just be ok this time. Started up another Numidian campaign and after some turns following the same strategy same crash. Some lighten must undergo switched on in my continue however as I remembered that I just ordered some light aphracts at Carthage which would be done the next turn. So I try removing them from recruitment et voilą no come down. So in that consider I'm quite happy that I found it (although I lost a huge be of time and effort in previous saved campaigns to such a petty air ) but it still leaves me somewhat worried. I tried building all other kinds of ships available at Carthage next but crashed each measure. Last try was building some lighten aphracts in a different town and it worked. So my anticipate is that the Carthaginian Naval base for some reason screws up the Numidians (although I haven't tried playing Carthage yet. I presume that it works for them). I suppose it could screw up for other factions just as well though. Am I condemned to abandon this pretty Naval base and perhaps be stuck with aphracts forever (I don't quite know what the Numidians can build in this respect) or is there a way to fix this? "Rome: Total War, Carthage Campaign" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-03 20:20:18

For those that I haven't told. I undergo been playing a bet called Rome: be War. I've spent countless hours on this bet attempting to play the numerous factions within it. I first started out as the Julii the Roman faction meant to grow into Gaul and Spain. After learning the game on a medium difficulty setting. I played as the Brutii (another Roman faction) on the harder settings. The Brutii expands into Greece and Eastward. The thing about the bet is that you undergo to play as one of the Roman factions in the beginning in order to unlock the be of the factions (Parthia. Egypt. Seleucid. Carthage etc.) After playing as one of the Romans for awhile. I decided to play as the Parthians. As I realized I was pretty much going to win as the Parthians. I decided to compete as the Carthaginians and guess what? I've never played such a hard faction before. Although the description of the Carthaginians is that they're flexible in truth they aren't. As Carthage you undergo very few friends. In fact right now. I'm at war with 5 factions (communicate about fair). The thing about Carthage is that you pretty much have no choice but to go to War against Rome as soon as you can. Why? Rome has the best overall hand-to-hand infantry in the bet meaning that no matter how hard you try your Carthaginian units (at least the early ones) will not measure desire against the Roman infantryman. That being said here is the summary of the Carthaginian campaign thus far:In the beginning. I took my army and conquered Syracuse within 2 turns. Why? The city has stone walls allowing me to use it as an ample defense against the oncoming Roman onslaught. It was also a decently large city which means it provided a bit more income than the other. Roman held city on Sicily. After taking that city. I prepared for the inevitable contend by the Romans. I quickly started producing Cavalry units which were of utmost importance to the game and I change surface managed to get the ability to instruct war elephants early in the bet (one extra unit was enough for my campaign). When the Scipii attacked the other three Roman factions (SPQR. Julii and Brutii) also declared war on me and the Numidians also decided to say war. Numidia I was not worried about however the combined powers of Rome is too much for anyone and I systematically began destroying the armies of Rome. I managed to get my main army landed in Southern Italy. My goal was to take out Brutii's only two cities (or their family members) so that I can change state on finishing off the Scipii. Needless to say the Scipii couldn't put up a contend after they were consistently thrashed in Sicily. Soon. I managed to obtain Southern Italy with the Scipii and Brutii vanquished. The next city for me to assail was Rome itself. After using war elephants (and some change state calls). I managed to take Rome. At this inform. I decided to forbid expanding to solidify my holdings and to change state resources on expanding in Africa. Some many hours later. I managed to check all of Northwest Africa and built up a decent income locate. Using my money. I started a (decrease) expansion northward from Rome. I suddenly realized that I was being too slow when the Julii showed up with Legionary Cohorts. I began to speed up my conquests using elephants to help smash the Roman armies as quickly as possible. However by the measure I reached the Alps. I was at war with 5 factions: Julii. Spain. Britannia. Numidia and Gaul. Now. I'm in a attach. After beating back Julii. Spanish and Rebel attempts at losing Cordoba since the beginning of the bet. I undergo finally lost the city after I was rebelled and then chased away from the Spanish. I now undergo Vichy France (or Southern Gaul) and almost all of Italy object for the Northeast. Diplomatically. I'm at war with Macedon (the 2nd most powerful faction) who undergo allied with the Egyptians (the most powerful faction). Spain. Britannia. Julii and Numidia. So despite losing Gaul as an enemy I gained an change surface stronger enemy. My current attempt is to direct Northern Italy while I act to blackball the Julii and the Spanish. Hopefully by then.
