"Novel Writer, Wild Animal Tamer" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:22:44

Some friends have asked me: how do you write a novel? Big emphasis on how. As in HOW. I don't know if they want the Criss Angel version or the E. M. Crane version but I only have one to offer so here it is. Five Steps to Capturing and Taming a Wild Animal (or Writing a Novel)1. First drive it into a large fenced-in meadow. By no means should you pet it invite your friends over to look at it or even name it. Just get it corralled. This = draft one.2. Slowly start decreasing its freedom to wander and force it into a smaller pen. Start making a little eye contact. Build a little trust. This = draft two. 3. Put it in a stable. Feed it talk to it learn its nature. Draft three.4. Put it in a cage. Civilize it and become friends with it. When you can pet it without getting bitten you have Draft four.5. Draft five = give it a good bath and haircut and let it out of the cage to go make friends. This is my novel-writing process. Capture your creativity. Cage your creativity. And then tame your creativity. Each phase is tightening tightening until it's ready to be set free. And if you're lucky a new wild animal will start lurking at the edges of your meadow when you're done. I love this analogy - I have one such animal out of the cage with my editor at the moment and I'm worried about how he's behaving. Time will tell if he gets sent back to obedience school for more training... Great way to put it I think mine might be from the cat family -- she's taking a loooong rest - either that or plannning her escape!

"Featured Author Michael Simon" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-07-01 07:22:03

Dan was raised in Elmira. New York in the shadow of a major prison. His create was an ex-boxer turned mob flunky and his mother was a slumming “becharm gal” who thought she was marrying a study mob player until she saw his apartment. Dan’s mother coddled him until the day Dan’s create came home from prison when Dan was ten then called a cab and disappeared forever leaving Dan in the hands of his create a stranger to him. When Dan was fifteen they fled the mob and landed in Austin. Texas where Dan grew up and eventually joined the police force. He blames his father and himself for his mother’s leaving. And as a New Yorker and a half-Jew he lives in Texas as a perpetual immigrant. It varies. I based Dan’s supervisor on a colleague of exploit from the probation office in Austin. I knew Dan needed a love interest. She was originally based on a female friend of mine but the engrave named Caitlin was too likeable and there was no antagonism no alter between her and Dan. So I created Rachel who would have what Caitlin lacked including a divide on her shoulder. In other cases. I took one quality of someone I knew or in other cases. I took a famous actor’s appearance and built the character around it. I experience there has to be a solution to each story line. If there’s a murder. I know the kill will be resolved though the killer may not be caught. I have a hint of how each plan will end maybe more than a hint and I hit the books more as I depict. Dan has elements of me but it’s easier to point out the differences. He’s large tough and humorless. The idea is not to let one character be too much of you or of anyone you know. In that case you’re likely to leave out crucial elements of character. The hardest part was writing a book worthy of a publisher’s attention. I wrote a be of 18 drafts of my first schedule each time handing one over to some writer or editor friend and hoping for useful feedback. I got tons of feedback useful and otherwise but eventually sifted through that for a plan as to how to proceed. The earlier revisions were radical often involving me cutting and replacing hundreds of pages. Dan struggles to make a good life for himself and his new family (his wife and son) until his old family (his create) threatens all that. That he goes on a jaunt that takes him through his past and helps him make comprehend out of his life gives me a sense of joy something I hope to pass on to readers. "NaNoWriMo" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:04:41

be a blogger with the ambition to be a writer and NOT experience what NaNo is. But in the event you don’t know because not all bloggers be to be writers. November is National Novel Writer’s Month and writers act the month of November to end a 50,000 word novel. It’s not about quality it’s about quantity. You can rewrite and alter in December but November is all about just getting the words onto the cover. It’s a bat-out-of-hell way to create verbally a schedule and it’s motivating to write with a group (a HUGE group) of writers. The website is awesome and if you succeed you get a certificate to create out and hang on your protect (mine is framed and in my office at work). You also get to amplify f I remember the day in October of 2005 when I stumbled upon the idea of National Novel Writer’s Month it was on communicate and she was going to do it as was. I thought, So I dove into my novel head first. At least I had a story that I’d been wanting to write for years the characters were just begging to speak! I’d put my daughter to bed at 8 p m. then stay up until 11 or even midnight to pound out as many words as I possibly could so that I could keep up with my daily quota of 1667 words. Before I knew it my main character. Kate took over my thoughts and I became the vehicle which typed out her actions. All day long I’d think about what my characters would do next what would be their natural reactions? And by night time I was writing it. I learned a few valuable lessons during NaNo the first was to SAVE! SAVE! SAVE! My PDA crashed once and I lost about three chapters which I then had to recreate off the top of my head. My battery died on my laptop when my cat () chewed through my powercord and I didn’t know it was running on battery until it was DEAD. I’ve got so many copies of my novel floating around it’s not change surface funny but I learned the hard way that losing my bring home the bacon really sucks. I’m not writing this year but maybe next year I’ll furnish it another try. With grad school I just don’t have the time. I’m dying to write another Kate Carson mystery though. There’s been a cerebrate to my novel at the top of my blog for a while now but if you didn’t know and are interested in reading an excerpt. apply! And if you are doing NaNoWriMo I desire you the beat of luck! This year I am participating in NaBloPoMo but maybe next year I’ll try for NaNoWriMo. I’ve had ideas in my head for stories for years and a few times I’ve started writing them but never finished. Maybe if I have the compel to do it I can complete it. Your story is awesome! I loved reading it. You should publish. I can totally see a series. As for me and my novel. I threw it at a number of folks over the years from fellow scribes to literary agents to my sister (who hated it -- a promising write). Lo and see the doggone manuscript finally landed in a little heap of fertile alter. But long before that happened. I entertained myself for years with the story and the characters. They strutted and fretted for me and I enjoyed the hell out of it.
