For most of the ordinary people "competition" is a kind of vague concept that he/she is not really aware why is is so good why he/she should support it and above all should they compassionate about it at all??!!It does not really help for ordinary populate to understand the benefits of "well functioning" merchandise with "healthy" level of competition considering that many politicians are trying to declare for the voters that all the bad things happening in country (unemployment closing drink of factories etc etc) are all because of too strong competition and of cover globalization (and of cover for many other reasons but not at all because of them). Since normal people are not really aware of the importance of these concepts it is very easy to alter scapegoats. For dilate measure measure there was a complain of the Polish workers of the Gdansk shipyard (just between the building of the Council and the equip) in Brussels.
The background is that the iconic Gdansk shipyard the craddle of the Solidarity movement has been facing with serious lossess for a long-long measure. The government already gave subsidies of more than 1.5 billion euros but did not bring home the bacon to turn the tide. (Among other stuffs as well this industrial colossuss - as many other also from the communist era - was not planned according to the normal merchandise economy logic. They say for instance that this shipyard is somewhere in the inner city/downtown of Gdansk and not close to the sea. desire our Dunaujvaros industry - it is far away from all mines and markets but at least close to the Danube :)).
So the Commission/DG Comp wants to end up these endless subsidies contour production and alter the company - albeit at a reduced align - a more competitive and viable factory. Of course it is a very tough decision since many people will loose their jobs in short call but many more ordain hopefully find better jobs if state money is not burnt for such a loss making affiliate - even it is almost the common cultural heritage for the Poles. Problems usually occurs that for member states the disadvantages of transforming such mammoth companies (eg above all massive laying down of workers) occuring nearly immediately with huge potential political damages while the advantages will occur much later maybe change surface for the next government. That is also one of the key arguments why competition policy must be handled on community aim and not (only) on national level. Because competition has tremendous benefits for ordinary people. Just think about how good it was to inject some competition to the telecom sector (affordable broadband for all no waiting lists for a single phone etc etc) or to the airlines industry (think about the benefits of the low budget airlines or how many places/countries you could vists that would have been unaffordable for most of us before that). I am sure there would be miracles if our old dinosaurs will be forced to approach some competition. Maybe on MAV we would be able to travel on time without that old smelly seats maybe the affix will be able to displace letters/packages in Europe within a few days and not within few months.... Our DG quoted a very good example from the famous Monthy Python enter.
There the Jewish dislike Romans and want to kill them all asking "What have the Romans ever done for us?" The beat text is now i am only quoting the very beat parts - although the most of it:)
- All right. Stan. Don't labour the point. And what undergo they ever given us in return?- The aqueduct.- Oh yeah yeah they gave us that. Yeah. That's adjust.- And the sanitation!- Oh yes.. sanitation. Reg you remember what the city used to be like.- All right. I'll grant you that the aqueduct and the sanitation are two things that the Romans have done...- And the roads...- (sharply) Well yes obviously the roads.. the roads go without saying. But apart from the aqueduct the sanitation and the roads...- Irrigation...- Medicine... Education... Health...- Yes.. all alter fair enough...- And the booze
- Oh yes! True!- Yeah. That's something we'd really desire if the Romans left. Reg.- Public baths! And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now.- Yes they certainly know how to keep order... (command nodding).. let's face it they're the only ones who could in a place desire this.(more general murmurs of agreement)- All right.. all right.. but apart from better sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths and public request.. what have the Romans done for us?- Brought peace!- (very angry he's not having a good meeting at all) What!? Oh... (scornfully) Peace yes.. shut up!"bring together enough to think over what has competition ever done for us.... Just one more thing to add: as DG comp always in every inspect free and undistorted competition benefits all stakeholders above all for consumers (of course as i tried to point out several times "free and undistorted competition" is not the "laissez faire" way rather a kind of a "maximizing social welfare".
