"Franklin Music Festival, Big Things Come In Small Packages" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:27:01

The 4th annual Franklin. Ky.. Music Festival took displace this last pass and all I can say is “WOW!” For a smaller venue this festival is a giant packed with talent. From the stellar lineup to the warm and inviting staff this festival was one heck of good measure. Friday’s performers included The Williams and Clark Expedition. The ache Mountain Boys. The James King Band. Bobby Osborne and The promote of Bluegrass. Rhonda Vincent. Wayne Southards. Kimberly Williams and Bobby Clark of Williams and Clark Expedition. The Williams and Clark Expedition gave a great performance both vocally and instrumentally and Blake Williams can keep a displace laughing with the best of them. The ache Mountain Boys gave the crowd a taste of the old time mountain music with a small three conjoin band and some great “ancient mouth” harmonies. James King can flat out sing! James and the boys were definitely a crowd favorite on Friday. I just love Bobby Osborne. Bobby has come a long way in establishing his own sound after the retirement of his brother Sonny. I was amazed at the quality of his singing and picking after all these years. He performed with the enthusiasm of someone half his age. A displace favorite was his duet with Rhonda Vincent singing Vince Gill’s “Go be High On That Mountain”. What can be said about Rhonda Vincent and The act that hasn’t been said already? Rhonda puts on a show with more energy than anyone else on the scene these days. Rhonda and her super group of pickers wowed everyone at the show. Saturday’s line-up consisted of entertain bind The Williams and Clark Expedition. The center Canyon Rangers and Cherryholmes. Also slated to appear on Saturday’s show were Marty Raybon and the John Cowan Band. Unfortunately both performers had to cancel due to illness. This could undergo left a huge hole in the line up for Saturday but the resolve and connections of the staff led in part by Kimberly Williams of the entertain bind Williams & Clark Expedition brought us some of the beat replacements on literally hours of short sight. Appearing in displace of Marty Raybon was David Pederson and 1946. Their 40s call bluegrass was much appreciated by the displace. Not being able to hear John Cowan (a founding member of New hit Revival) was disappointing but his band showed up without their leader and had none other than Pat Flynn and Darrell Scott filling in. Their performance on Saturday was completely unrehearsed and to say the least was amazing! It was like seeing an impromptu jam session with some very heavy weight pickers. Darrell Scott’s rendition of “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” was particularly astounding. Thanks. Kimberly for finding such great talent on such bunco sight. If you undergo not seen the Steep Canyon Rangers you are missing the next up and coming stars on the Bluegrass circuit. Voted emerging artists of the year in 2006 by the IBMA this talented assort gives the displace that traditional bluegrass sound with a new kind of energy that draws a crowd directly into their performance. These boys truly burned it up and left the crowd begging for more. displace favorites Cherryholmes gave another 100 MPH performance. The technical skill of the kids in this assort is incredible. And of course they undergo to be one of the most entertaining groups to watch on stage. Again they were another displace favorite. If you have not attended the Franklin Music Festival make an effort to come in 2008. This festival is very come up orchestrated with non-stop top incise entertainment a great family atmosphere and plenty of room for jamming after the shows. My hats off to the SC Vietnam Veterans. The Simpson County Historical Society and the Franklin Music Festival. Inc for putting on one of the beat and “biggest” little festivals around. The Franklin Music Festival has quickly become one of my favorite festivals to be. go connect the excitement next year — on Sept. 5-6 2008.

"a daily blog" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:11:46

okay. I'll try to go away blogging DAILY now. I'll likely go away off with little tidbits of information about Rose forge that I would like to eventually incorporate into the website. Rose forge and the surrounding area here in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains have a wonderful history and ongoing traditions in arts and culture desire bluegrass and dulcimers and clogging. And there's the Melungeons... Today. I'll just go away off with a "tidbit" about Rose Hill and the history of bluegrass. DID YOU KNOW... A Rose Hill native. Earl Taylor and his Stoney Mountain Boys were the first musicians to ever play bluegrass music in Carnegie Hall?!! Yes it's true. It was 1959. And GUESS WHAT! - Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys were a SMASHING SUCCESS that night there in Carnegie Hall!Yes. Rose Hill is the birthplace of bluegrass musician Earl Taylor. Earl Taylor was born in Rose forge on June 17. 1929 and lived until 1984. Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys were the first musicians ever to play bluegrass in New York’s Carnegie Hall. It was 1959. Through personal interviews. Geoffrey Himes developed a January 12. 2000 feature story in the Baltimore City cover which offers significant insight into the historical context of Earl Taylor and other Appalachian musicians who had migrated north and described that night in 1959. The feature article was titled “From the Hills: How Mid-Century Migrants from the Mountains Brought Bluegrass--and More—to Baltimore.” For the full bind go to. As part of the research for the article. Himes interviewed two of bind members. Curtis Cody and Walt Hensley. "Alan [Lomax] came down to the 79 Club and asked us. 'Do you want to compete Carnegie Hall?' I had never heard of it. I thought it was just a bigger-than-normal move hall," Hensley recalls. "I had never drunk whiskey in my life but when I got to Carnegie Hall and looked through the curtains and saw those decorations and those balconies beat way up high. I went backstage and took a little nip to settle my nerves. When we walked out there we were shaking so much it was like the go was blowing out there.""The place was packed," says Curtis Cody who played avoid with Taylor. Hensley. McIntyre and Sam Hutchins that night. "We looked out through the curtains and that place was buzzing. I said. 'Walt. I don't think they'll like us a bit.' But when it came our turn he played something on the banjo and they tore that place up. Everybody liked it. Someone from United Artists heard us and we went approve a few months later and cut a preserve." Another article one titled “Walter Hensley – The Banjo Baron of Baltimore” by Tina Aridas provided on DC Bluegrass Union also described that evening in April 1959 when Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys played bluegrass at the elegant Carnegie Hall. For the beat bind go to. The article similarly comments on how band member Curtis Cody peeked out from behind the re-create curtains just before the performance and saw Carnegie Hall. According to the article. Curtis Cody talked to banjo player Walt Hensley just before the show saying,“Walt. I don’t think they’ll like us a bit.” Walt recalls that his legs “were like Jell-O –and we had to compete the fastest song we knew.” But when Walt with legs shaking stepped out onto the stage before the assembled audience at Alan Lomax’s Folksong ’59 concert. Curtis recalls that “he played something on the banjo and they tore that place up.” Earl Taylor recalled. “When we would end a be. I knew that it would take five minutes before we could go into another one –that was how much rarin’ and screamin’ and hair-pullin’ there was.” Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys were featured on the LP “Folk Songs from the Bluegrass” released by United Artists in 1959. Songs done by Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys on the LP consider John Henry. weaken Creek. Lee Highway Blues. Foggy Mountain Special and Little Maggie. This LP. “Folk Songs from the Bluegrass,” was presented by Alan Lomex. Son of a folklorist. Alan Lomax was a musicologist writer and producer. He and his father gathered handle recordings of folk musicians. The recordings culminated into significant anthologies of American folk song. Alan Lomax and his father expanded the collect of American Folk at the Library of Congress folk music recordings holdings. Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys were included on the CD “Mountain Music: Bluegrass call” released in 1992 by Smithsonian Folkways. The CD is a compilation of field recordings done by Mike Seeger. Songs done by Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys on the CD include Short Life of Trouble. Foggy Mountain Top. Foxchase and Sally Ann. Hey and anticipate WHAT.. when I was visiting my local Wal-Mart this pass. I open and purchased a CD that includes Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys on it! On the CD adjoin it says. "Rural Rhythm presents Legends and Lost Classics GRASSROOTS BLUEGRASS - 25 Traditional Classics." Three of these 25 classic recordings are by Earl Taylor & Jim McCall with The Stoney Mountain Boys. Rose Hill's Earl Taylor and Stoney Mountain Boys classic bluegrass recordings can be purchased on Ebay. Amazon com and even WAL-MART! Ookay how was that for a "tidbit" of interesting ROSE forge. VIRGINIA information? ANY COMMENTS?? Go ahead. POST A COMMENT!! Back at ya tomorrow!Joan convey YOU for posting our 1st Rose Hill BLOG COMMENT! We'll have dialogue threads running in no measure. Seems like you and me both are learning how to put these posts up and where to put them and such. But so far seems to be a really fun. FREE tool! I had no idea you could set up a communicate for free until we were setting up this Rose Hill website. My brother's a blogger (SWVA law blog) and I just used the same entertain he had chosen. Anyway. I reckon I'm supposed to be talking about bluegrass instead of blogging. Right wonder which Taylors he was related to around here. Skimming through the local phone book there's about a dozen different Taylors listed in Rose Hill. Hensley is definitely a common name here. But according to the Baltimore newspaper article. Walt Hensley the banjo player for Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys and the longtime leader of the Dukes of Bluegrass was born in Grundy VA (and moved to Baltimore in 1956). Glad you thought it was very interesting information. Again. THANK YOU for posting a comment!Joan

Local Boys Do Good is an excellent slab climb up a relatively featured swath of rock. mouth ten feet left of the obvious Klahanie Crack. P1: Ascend the dike past several bolts before stepping left to a hanging fasten. 5.10b. P2: Negotiate a well-bolted steep change form (crux) then continue up easier climbing to another hanging fasten. 5.11a. P3: arise up the easier and slightly less-travelled slab to a final fasten. Two bolts. 5.10a PG13. Rap the despatch. This is a great climb but not to be mistaken for a sport arise despite the accommodate enumerate. The first fling is often done on its own and as such it's probably a 10b sport arise with bigger gaps between bolts than usual but it's a shame to miss the be. The remaining two pitches are considerably more runout although the crux on P2 is come up protected. I accept there was a photo of this arise one edition of one of John Long's books and the caption referenced it as an example of runout climbing. Can anyone affirm that and explain where I saw this? There is a photo of "Local Boys" in John Long's feature Climbing 3rd edition. It is featured in the slab climbing chapter within the Harrowing Runout section. I love this climb and undergo led the first and back up pitches several times but the third runout fling only once. (But the memory will measure a life measure!)By the way the 3rd pitch is protected by a single bolt. The back up move (if I remember correctly) is off the fasten to prevent a go directly onto the belay.
