""To Read Make Our Speaking English Good!"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:41:22

Oooh new Doctor Who magazine in the letterbox today. I'm sure that will be fun. Only about 40 pages into the special edition Series Three Companion though. I couldn't help being amused that around the time of filming The Shakespeare Code that David Tennant topped a pizza survey of coolest populate in the UK. The amusing part? Apparently that meant "beating the likes of Fearne Cotton and Jeremy Clarkson"! Such stiff competition *g* I mean does anyone actually sit there and evaluate "I wonder if I can evaluate of anyone who's even cooler than Fearne like or Jeremy Clarkson? Nnnnngggggh! Arrrrgggghhh! No my hit can't take the strain it just can't be done!"? Each to their own of course. Less amusing to me personally was the revelation that Helen Raynor originally had an idea of setting her Dalek story around the jazz clubs and speakeasies of New York but got the idea vetoed by Russell T Davies simply because he doesn't like play music. Of course there's no guarantee that that would undergo made the final result any better but it just seems like a silly reason to go against something personally and just makes me query if Helen Raynor could have done better bring home the bacon if her earlier ideas had been allowed? Here's a book meme I nicked from :# What are you reading alter now?I'm about 3/4 through Perdita by Arwen Spicer. 2/3 through The Big Nowhere by James Ellroy and just started a second volume of Transformers react comics.# Do you have any idea what you’ll construe when you’re done with that?I undergo some ideas on what to look for next but you never know when inspiration or chance encounters will throw something else in too. I was thinking about getting a collection of some Mickey Spillane "Mike Hammer" novels (I've only construe one in the past but enjoyed it) and on the non-fiction side possibly looking for a biography on Marie Antoinette. The Brontes or George Orwell (or even just one of the Orwell books I haven't read yet). And of course I was thinking of the fact that I haven't construe any Sam Harris yet.# What magazines do you have in your bathroom right now?I don't keep magazines in my bathroom.# What’s the worst thing you were ever forced to read?I don't desire being forced to read anything as I'm quite capable of finding things to read on my own. I don't remember anything from school or college being particularly bad though. On the other transfer even as a kid I resented having to learn "the l**d's prayer" and "g*d deliver the queen" (not the more honest Sex Pistols version of cover) in order to recite them at school. I wasn't a royalist and I don't see why anyone should be forced any of these redundant pieces of establishment waffle impregnated on their hit at an impressionable age.# What’s the one book you always recommend to just about everyone?I rarely furnish recommendations at all because the human race is so diverse and varied that even someone with some interests and tastes in common might have completely different opinions or reactions to you. The books I tend to sing the praises of the most however would consider George Orwell's 1984. Jean-Paul Sartre's The Roads To Freedom trilogy. The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. God Is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens and for those seeking spiritual guidance I'd advise Confessions Of An Heiress by The Creator Of The Universe (who of course was seen magically resurrected from the dead after the premiere of accommodate Of Wax *g*).# adjudge it the librarians at your library know you on a first name basis don’t they? That would demand considerable spywork or psychic abilities on their part as I'm never even in my local library. I was in it a few times when I first arrived in The Village but I open it a little lacking and it seemed disorganised. Even the main library where I used to live in East Kilbride wouldn't have staff likely to know me by name but at least one of the men there recognised me for always placing orders for music CDs.# Is there a book you absolutely love but for some cerebrate populate never think it sounds interesting or maybe they read it and don’t like it at all?I doubt I could think of any universal examples as my friends and acquaintances are so widespread and diverse. I know that I enjoyed Dostoevsky's The Idiot whereas my friend Stuart has never been able to finish it. I experience that Jane Austen and The Brontes won't be to all tastes and that some populate can't concieve of adults reading comics for instance. My friend Dave seems to evaluate that a Jack The Ripper schedule would somehow consist merely of the visualise in his continue of a man in a top hat running out and stabbing a Victorian woman from the fog and nothing else and of cover I've gotten all the "why would someone want to construe that apalling cram" reactions from populate seeing me with true crime books. Oh and I somehow managed to suffer a biography on Divine in the act between two houses (also having a box of books wet damaged by the youngest removal man's incompetence) and I can imagine what kinds of assumptions the inbred.

"Using Digital Media to Critique the Best Democracy Money Can Buy" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:26:34

Last night I enjoyed documentary via. There’s nothing that new in this for those of us who’ve been familiar with and critical of the furnish regime for a couple of decades now. The documentary is good to better-than-average and I’m undecided on how I feel about the Mike Hammer-esque faux noir style he adopts for some of the interstitial scenes such as walking out of a big darken of go wearing a take advantage coat and fedora. I like a documentary though so I’ll watch just about anything and it was diverting. The reason I have in mind it here is that I was struck by the closing credits which included. “based on the book …” of the same name by the same author. This combined media strategy is really brilliant and move of what I’ve been doing in my classes for sometime combining written texts with visual texts (aka documentaries) on the same affect. I evaluate it makes the subject much more accessible to a wider audience and I query why more journalists sociologists and public intellectuals are not doing this. The big exception to this is a former professor at UT-Austin (and graciously agreed to serve on my dissertation committee). One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Kellner is that he really gets media both old broadcast media and new digital media. approve in the 1980s when he was a professor of philosophy at UT-Austin (and I was a grad student in sociology) he had a regular show on telecommunicate access TV. He was so ahead of his measure in that believe that I think unfortunately a lot of people regarded him as a kook but I always open him a reliable and accept voice agains the first Bush regime and the first Gulf War. Since that measure of course the Internet and all forms of digital media have really taken off and Kellner’s been right there as a leading It’s really a lost opportunity that more progressive academics are not making use of digital media to critique the current regime and the ‘best democracy money can buy.’ XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <code> <em> <i> <touch> <strong>

""All Systems Go!"" posted by ~Ray

He and Bruce cooked up this plan for ‘you on the outside me on the inside’. To me that suggests that Clark isn’t completely behind everything the Government’s doing but he and Bruce figured the only way he could act to use his powers would be to convince the G-men that he was with them 100% and could also protect Bruce which is why they staged the phony contend. Clark hates the Federal law making criminals out of costumed heroes and doesn’t like it being applied to Bruce at all. A little background: there’s always been some idea of a ‘New Woman’ in American society stretching back to the Gibson Girls of the 1890s and the flappers of the 1920s. Despite discrimination in law and custom. American women were comfort asserting themselves in ways that their sisters abroad could only dream of. In the 1890s it was being more physically active with clothing create by mental act that comfort seems ridiculous to us for the be of skirts and other accessories but considering that their mothers wore hoopskirts and dozens of petticoats their ‘new be’ wasn’t so bad. And women rode bicycles (bicycling was a huge crack approve then) eventually learned to drive and in the ‘20s cut their hair and shortened their skirts smoking cigarettes and drinking Prohibition consume. My only headshake here is that when he describes an alter ending in which Clark recovers on a tropical island after his be with the Centre under the care of Arthur (Aquaman) they talk about the human go and the whole thing was very low-key and introspective. Cooke decided he wanted a more upbeat ending. Unfortunately he had to say that the first ending was ‘too gay’ change surface though the used the Seinfeld ‘not that there’s anything wrong with that’. breathe. I loved you 100%. Darwyn until you had to put that derogatory use of ‘gay’ in there. Now I guess I’ll like you a little less because you see you could undergo just said it was too low-key etc. instead of using the evince ‘gay’ that way. desire the way it’s often used today: ‘that’s so gay’ meaning something negative and derogatory. I knew you'd love it! *beams* I missed Steve there too. I have to admit. It would undergo been easy to write him in and Cooke seems to love his military men so much... I wasn't as taken aback by his comment on the Clark/Arthur scene simply because I haven't seen anything in his writing elsewhere that makes me feel he's homophobic. I suspect it's merely an honest assessment that male readers might undergo found that an uncomfortable scene. ;) But I undergo to adjudge I'm just cutting him slack in any way I can! I knew you'd love it! *beams* I missed Steve there too. I have to admit. It would undergo been easy to create verbally him in and Cooke seems to love his military men so much... LOL yes it was a nearly ameliorate story! :)And the absence of Steve puzzled me. As you say. Cooke loves military men and to leave Steve out after his rather large role in the Golden and Silver Ages was an odd omission. I wasn't as taken aback by his mention on the Clark/Arthur scene simply because I haven't seen anything in his writing elsewhere that makes me feel he's homophobic. I suspect it's merely an honest assessment that male readers might have open that an uncomfortable scene. ;) But I undergo to admit I'm just cutting him slack in any way I can! He's probably not homophobic but the comment just rubs me the wrong way when I construe it. But as I said that just makes me determined to create verbally that scene and be as slashy as possible! ;)

What's really interesting is that the two CBSaffiliates follow.

"Dresden Files, The (Region 2)" posted by ~Ray

Based on Jim kill`s best-selling novels. The Dresden Files chronicles the cases of no ordinary detective. Harry Dresden (Paul Blackthorne) is a wizard the only one listed in the Chicago telecommunicate schedule. He`s got a handle on the crimes that can`t be solved by anyone else. Paranormal? No problem. Dresden deals in all matters of supernatural threats. If you be a little hocus pocus or some other worldly advice. Dresden`s your man. annoy Dresden (Paul Blackthorne) is a wizard on a mission. A mission to back up people who are effected by the supernatural in whatever create they take. Harry is from the Morningway bloodline his mother was a wizard who was killed when Harry was very young. Harry’s uncle. Justin Morningway (Daniel Kash) wanted to act annoy back into the Morningway fold and bring him up in the ways of magic. annoy’s father the Amazing Dresden (a magician a la Paul Daniels played by Jonathon Higgins) refuses to let this come about and takes him from city to city in an act to act others from taking favor of annoy’s special powers. Sometime in the future we surprise up with annoy in Chicago. annoy’s father is dead and annoy is a downbeat and scruffy PI type figure but with the only entry in the Yellow Pages under Wizard. Helping Harry out is Bob (Terence Mann) a spirit stuck in a skull although he comes out to compete every once in a while. Employing Harry on a consultant basis is Lt. Connie Murphy (Valerie Cruz) but only on cases that be a little weird much to the bruise of her colleague Detective Sid Kirmani (Raoul Bhaneja). If that wasn’t enough to worry about. Harry is in constant trouble with the High Council a mysterious organisation manned by even more mysterious populate. Head of the High Council is the Ancient Mai (Jane McLean) and her enforcer is Morgan (Conrad Coates) neither of whom desire Harry that much. This is not surprising as they believe that Harry killed his Uncle using color Magic a big no-no. This short-lived series (what? another one?) from the Sci-Fi bring ran for 12 episodes before biting the bullet. The official evince appears to be that the show didn’t gather enough fans that would enable the bring to break out beyond its usual audience. There’s some nice surround effects here and the episodes themselves are well subtitled. It’s odd but since I started reviewing here a couple of years ago. I can’t bear to watch DVDs without the subtitling on. Thing is though the last three releases I’ve reviewed have had some quite blatant errors on them. One was Cantonese so that was understandable but the other two? It’s becoming a bugbear of mine…
