"Writing Tips For Novice Authors" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:23:24

If you are reading this article then you probably have asked yourself at some point in your life. "Do I have what it takes to become an author?"I believe that successful authors those who actually write and finish that novel or book of poetry or even that book of short stories and see it all the way to publication have certain characteristics. Characteristics of Authors1. They like to sit for hours in front of a computer screen (or with pen and paper) typing (writing) away.2. They think about their book even when they're not writing.3. They are motivated to finish their book.4. They are motivated to proofread edit and revise their finished book until it is the best it can be.5. They are motivated to publish their book.6. Once they publish the first book they are already working on the next one. If you answered yes to anyone of the above then you have a good chance of attaining your dreams of becoming an author. Don't listen to those people who say it's a competitive market out there. Don't listen to those people who say they've written five books and haven't had one published yet. And don't listen to those people who send you back your manuscripts! Listen to yourself. Listen to that inner voice the one that is whispering now. But wait until you get started. Once your book is written and published that inner voice will be roaring! And the whole world will hear about it. I know. I know. I tend to be the optimist. But we have so many pessimists in the book business we sure need some more optimists around! For you the novice writer who would like to start writing that first book the best way to begin is to start writing. Yes just sit down and do it. Stop the other activities the television the reading the shopping the chatting on the telephone and find the time to devote at least one hour a day to writing. What’s one hour a day in the scheme of things? It comes and goes like this poof! What do you have to show after an hour of television? A lazy yawn? If that same hour were spent on writing then there would be a product in your hands something that will be shared hopefully one day with others. So go ahead shut the door to the rest of the world for one hour (or more) and make yourself comfortable in front of the computer screen (or pen and paper). Let’s take the first step to becoming an author. How To BeginFoundationJust like a construction company which builds a foundation to a home you also need to prepare a foundation for your career in writing. Don't skip this step it's important. Your "foundation" will consist of basic writing skills. Remember those English courses you took in high school and college? If you don't remember anything from those courses then it wouldn't be a bad idea if you found your old English textbooks dusted them off a bit and looked through their pages to refresh your memory. If you haven't taken any courses in creative writing you might consider signing up for one. Check with your local community college. They often offer weekend and evening classes and sometimes even online classes. If you're on a budget then visit the public library and sign out books relevant to writing. In addition it would be very useful to join a writing group (online or in your local area) that critiques your work and gives you the opportunity to critique also. The group provides wonderful support and an avenue to sharpen your skills as you gain experience in writing as well as exposure to other people's writing. For example. Writing com is a good example of an online resource that provides many opportunities to share your writing and get your work rated and reviewed. If you want to join a critique or review group it offers that also. The second step to becoming an author is to have the right tools. Tools NeededBesides a comfortable chair plenty of lighting and a quiet room you will need a computer with a word processing program (e g.. Microsoft Word) a printer and plenty of paper. Why a computer? First of all publishers typically will request a copy of your files sent to them on a floppy disk. More importantly working with a word processing program will aid you in many ways towards becoming a published author. It will provide the opportunity to save your work as a Word file without having to use up tons of paper (as with a typewriter). This greatly aids you in keeping your work organized. It also gives you the flexibility to edit and re-edit large sections of your work quickly by allowing you to utilize the copy and paste functions. Other advantages of using a computer word processing program is that it provides spell check capabilities and also helps you count the number of words per page. In addition when you want to spice up your vocabulary (For example if you like to use the word "walk" often and are getting tired of that word) place your cursor on the word "walk" hit shift F7. It will give you a list of synonyms you can choose from - like stroll amble etc.). The time saved by using a computer is very valuable. It gives you more time available to write! Of course if you don’t have the above materials don’t let that stop you from writing that book! Using a pen and paper is perfectly fine. Books were written with these two basic tools for centuries. Let’s assume you are using a computer and a Word processing software. First of all before you begin writing form a subdirectory that you can add all your chapters to. Maybe you know the title of your book already. Fine then form a subdirectory using the name of the title. After you finish writing that first chapter (oh joy!) just save it as Chapter 1 under the subdirectory. If you are writing a book of poetry then you might want to save each poem as a separate file. When I write my chapters for my novel. I format them in double space mode with a Times New Roman 11 font. All the margins are at least one inch. This way it will be ready for manuscript submission. Try not to add your page numbers until the very last revision. Page numbers constantly change when you’re revising so wait until the end. Finally another reason for having a computer is for Internet access. As a writer you will have opportunities to submit your fiction online such as or even your articles online for e-zines such as Any chance you can get to write online do it. As long as it doesn't take too much time away from your book. It's also a free way of promoting yourself before the book is even published. So you need to balance your time in writing that book honing your writing skills submitting your work along the way for others to critique and promoting yourself. Can you do it? Of course you can!The third step to becoming an author is:What to WriteIf you are planning to write a novel it would help to know what general category your book is going to be in. Will it be in the romance mystery or science fiction category? If you don’t know take some time and think about it. Read some books in those genres. Which books seem to attract you the most? It’s highly likely that you’ll be writing in the category that you like to read. My preference is romance because I read those types of books the most. Once you decide the category then you are closer to writing that novel! For poetry you might start by writing a poem and submitting it to a poetry journal or a poetry contest. Gain exposure for your poetry. Join a critique group so you can sharpen your poetry skills. A chapbook usually consists of about 25-35 poems. For a poetry book you'll need at least 60 pages of poetry if not more. Types of NovelistsI have found over time that there are two types of novelists. The first type is the writer who prefers drawing up a proposal or plan of what they will write about. The second type prefers to write whatever comes into their mind at that moment. You decide which writer you will be. Type 1 NovelistThey begin by describing the characters their names personalities and sometimes their motives. Then they decide when and where the setting will take place. When will it take place? If it takes place before the 1900’s then it will be considered historical. Also will the setting be in the country in a city (which city?) in a house (whose house) on a cruise ship? That needs to be defined also. Once those decisions are made they write brief sketches of each chapter. It could be a page or two long. Once all this is done then the real writing begins. If this method works for you then feel free to use it. It may take some time but you will become more confident about what you’ll write once you go through this initial process. Type 2 NovelistWhat if you’re the type of person who doesn’t want to spend all that time writing proposals and character sketches? What if you’re like me who prefers to just write whatever comes into your head? Then do it! Sit down and start writing. Write anything. As the story develops something wonderful begins brewing in your mind. Something called creativity. I’ve caught myself hours after I finished writing a chapter and I’ll be preparing dinner or walking somewhere and a scene from my novel will begin to unfold. It’s called creative problem solving. My mind is working to solve the problem that the writing presents it even though I’m not actively writing. When I get those urges. I immediately stop what I’m doing and jot down my thoughts. It’s helped me many times particularly when everything clicks together. How Long Will It Take?It took me almost two years to write and find a publisher for my first novel. Lipsi’s Daughter. For other people it may take longer or shorter depending on the amount of time they allow for writing and how many pages they are writing. I know of authors that took six seven up to twelve years to write their first book. I also know of a famous author who writes two novels a year!So unless you begin writing that first page of your book you'll never know how long it'll take you to write it. Go ahead make that first step and good luck!

"Ready for NANOWRIMO? Check Out These Creative Writing Tools & Software" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-07-01 07:23:06

First off in my last affix I mentioned Holly Lisle’s to writing fiction and building worlds e-books that are unlike any writing book you’ll encounter in a book hold on so I won’t explain those further. My core out writing drive right now is the software that I use to write my novel organize chapters bring home the bacon with word ascertain goals and keep track of versions– Liquid Story Binder is hands drink the best software for the PC (Mac users swear by Scrivener). There is so much you can do with LSB–act notes character dossiers storyboards images outlines analyse for overused words etc. I personally love the extensive statistics–word counts goals etc. There are only two drawbacks I’ve found with it–first it’s very complex and there isn’t a tutorial to back up new users. I am pretty sure there are features that I haven’t really figured out how to use yet but what is accessible for me is amazing. The second thing that it really lacks is a good timeline feature. There is one but you can’t print it which is a HUGE drawback for me. You also can’t change how you believe it which makes it a bit less useful. Controls in the timeline are also counter-intuitive. But I’m probably spoiled because for the last few years. I’ve been working with Storylines part of the suite of tools: Storylines is by far the most useful tool that I have found for helping me organize multiple characters viewpoints and a story’s numerous subplots. You can easily move cards around add columns resize views etc. Reports are easy to generate in a variety of formats. I spent four hours in Storylines last night completely reorganizing the structure for my current book. It’s given me the ability to easily see everything in front of me and that bird’s eye view is invaluable. You can also store information about characters places notes concepts editor pitches etc. Writer’s Cafe also provides an online journal storage for files and images notebook thesaurus writerly quotes and fiction how-to’s. There is even a Forty Thieves solitaire bet you can use if you be a break. Plus they have great customer service–I had prompt personalized function with two bugs I was experiencing. Very refreshing in a world beat of email bots and overlooked message boards. Since I’m writing a historical novel there are a lot of snippets of research and information that I be to keep track of and while I’ve tested out countless products to help me be on top of it all. I find that a now defunct but still available bit of software is still perfect for my needs. It is simple and easy-to-use and gives me the ability to quickly find information. I act everything from character info to historical research in Keynote. However. I just open out about a free online MindMap collaboration tool. It looks pretty sweet so might try it out. As for writing on the go. I rely on my trusty. There are cheaper notebooks out there. I realize but I like the coat the hard cover back pocket and primarily the conclude of the paper as I write. There is just something special about these notebooks that I can’t really explain. I have them in several sizes but usually rely on the large ruled version to create verbally in cafes in the car on the plane etc. And finally since I use a USB stick to backup my writing information and to take files between computers it’s important to have a synchronization tool to help me move files approve and forth and to back it all up. I’m not a huge Microsoft fan but their is a perfect free drive that helps you sync everything up. As you can see. I have all the tools to ready me for 1,666 words a day go November so really all I need to do is sit my derriere in the chair and start spilling out. I love hearing how other writers be creative and productive so let me experience in the comments what works for you. I use for the actual writing part of it - as you mentioned. I’m on a Mac and express by it (actually it’s the cerebrate I moved to the Mac - it’s that good!) For putting together worlds ideas scraps of text about characters and suchlike I use a collaborative with a clump of like-minded individuals. It’s very helpful - I impel in ideas and comments and questions on their stuff they throw questions back at me. It’s a really good way to develop worlds; having populate ask “But how does this work?” I’ve used it for a number of non-novel projects over about 8 years so it just seemed the natural way to do things for novel-writing too… I tried LSB too and it just didn’t click with me. I didn’t like having to define everything into books/chapters. I do a lot of prework and couldn’t evaluate out the beat displace to fasten it all. I tried mind42 and made a really cool map of all my characters for NSR. Then couldn’t really get it off the place. Downloaded to RTF it loses the images I’d stuck in (turned them into links). Downloaded to MindMap it did the same thing. Grrr! I’ve tried so many different systems and no ONE thing really works for me. I need the flexibility of a mind map–but I be to include images and larger blocks of text/research at the same time. I also want storyboards plotboards timelines etc. I can’t get it all into one drive. I really wish I had a Mac–Scrivener sounds ideal. I have to agree with you about the Moleskine notebooks. They are in a unify of their own. Both Julian (the tech genius behind Writer’s Cafe) and I are addicted to them. My favourite at the moment is the small change state cook one with squared paper but desire you I have a few different ones on the go at any one time. Just thinking about them makes me conclude happy! I’ve open that I desire using yWriter by Spacejock Software - the developer happens to be a fellow NaNoWriMo writer who felt desire making a freeware solution for writers - though. I am interested in trying out LSB. I’ve been using MoinMoin Desktop Edition it’s a personal wiki schedule for note keeping along with a plain run of the mill yellow legal pad for scrawling notes and sketches on the fly. Being I tend to like writing in the sci-fi genre. I finally caved and bought AstroSynthesis and Fractal Terrains to keep track of all my world canon and I’d already had Campaign Cartographer from role-playing in a sci-fi setting since creating maps of ship layouts always helped me keep descriptions consistent. I used to use yWriter and EverNote but now that I’ve discovered Liquid Story Binder I don’t be to use anything else. I actually found some information about Scrivener and I was very interested in it until I found out it was for Mac-users only and I use Windows. But then I heard about LSB and it’s awesome. I recommend it to anyone. It has even given me *inspiration* and motivation to continue writing my novel. I still use EverNote because I evaluate that’s a must-have for writers.

"Why Do Writers Get Residuals? (Writers? Guild of America Strike)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:05:26

But it’s one of those things i think for the studios this feels to me desire their waterloo their napster we’re in a period of incredible creativity in the world incredible connectedness. Putting down the hammer on the creatives — I’m an outsider to the entertainment industry so my apologies if this question is hopelessly naive.  But there is something about this entire touch that doesn’t make comprehend to me sitting up here in Silicon Valley. So here is my question.  A lot of this touch seems to turn around the Writers’ Guild and their belief that they deserve royalties (aka residuals) on versions of their content that are distributed digitally (DVDs downloads etc).  Apparently this was one of the big mistakes in their opinion of the late 1980’s agreement with the union. (For those of you not familiar with the term a “residual” is a micro-payment that you are entitled to every measure one of your contributing works is resold.  Just evaluate of a book author getting a small payment every time their book sells another copy or a music band getting a small payment every time they change another album.  Revenue sharing.) Now. I’ll be the first to admit - I’m not sure why you’d be a residual on a re-run and not on a DVD.  But my question really is more fundamental: Historically authors have always been paid per-copy sold as a form of risk-sharing between the publisher and the author.  It’s a classic alignment of incentives - more books sold mean more profits for the publisher and more income for the author.  This leapt from book authors to musicians to other forms of entertainment as the industry grew. The problem is with the exception of (2) these reasons could just as well apply to software engineers who in general never get paid through residuals. Software engineering is a creative process where people with unique talent and skill create circumscribe (code) that is protected by copyright and signed over to their employer (the affiliate).  There are highs and lows in the industry and rapidly changing tastes/technology that can bring about to low times for an engineer as well as good times. The have is really the key to alignment between the owners of the company (shareholders) management and the individual engineer.  It’s the way of saying. “If this works we’ll all make money together.” So in theory. I anticipate you could replace the stock component with residuals.  You could argue that there are too many factors that play into have price and that residuals are a alter way of rewarding populate for their contribution to a product with desire term success.  (I’m not sure I’d ever believe the accounting behind residuals but I guess that’s why lawyers and union leaders alter a lot of money.) Maybe the problem is that writers aren’t really treated desire co-owners and long term employees at all and residuals represent that broken believe.  Maybe studios don’t interact writers like co-owners and long term employees because the compensation system is set up to pay them desire mercenaries.  Maybe there is no real concept of a studio - just an aggregation of 1000s of entertainment efforts each with their own finances and each writer is just a mini-shareholder of that effort. Maybe the problem is that the entertainment industry is for the most part stagnant and their isn’t sufficient growth to really provide the upside benefits provided to engineers as stock-holders. I anticipate I’m still at a loss to explain the difference however.  Let’s take a large affiliate desire Microsoft.  Should they be paying their engineers like writers?  Or should the studios be paying their writers like engineers? Good post. As someone who came out of the entertainment industry. I might be able to remove some lighten on this. I’m not sure I can express it clearly enough in this space but I’ll try. 1. Artists are not software engineers. The parallel is close (I’ve worked with both) but not exact. What matters not is how we realise them but how they perceive themselves. Artists accept what they do is *above* the plain of crass commercialism and that what they alter is magic unique and different. This leads to the mentality of “I don’t work in a factory. I bring home the bacon on a piece of art.” You raise good points and alter good arguments but artists just don’t look at the world in this way. Hence their demands for things software engineers don’t ask for. 2. The management of entertainment companies has very little credibility with the entertainers themselves. All the stereotypes about hollywood are true–ever seen “The Player?” I evaluate in Silicon Valley engineers are more trusting of management perhaps because there are software engineers starting and running companies. Ever seen an actor or writer running Disney or Viacom? 3. As I wrote approve in 1999 in a business educate application essay. I accept the proliferation of distribution channels such as the internet and cable TV is the hit biggest thing to hit the entertainment industry ever. This proliferation is finally giving power approve to the artists in a way they undergo never had especially to those artists who are in the top echelons. In a world of content everywhere it’s harder to get seen so the highest quality circumscribe is the scarcest. In the past the big companies controlled all distribution so if an artist wanted to be heard they had to refer to the often inhumane and underpaid working conditions. Artists desire the imagineers who work at Disney for example label it “Mouse-schwitz.” So now the artists are leveraging their importance against a assort of managers that have been their adversaries for a century. I will say this: artists(at least those who haven’t made it big or who aren’t independently wealthy) have very little concept about how markets bring home the bacon. Theatre/writing/enter school doesn’t offer courses in economics. Those folks don’t usually have money to invest. The math is hard for them and it’s hard for them to grasp that these principles affect their every day lives when I was in theatre school not once did we ever discuss the stock merchandise in our late night philosophy and booze sessions. So if you offered stock options to the writers of the Sopranos they say: “Hell no. I am an independent and creative person. I want *my* bring home the bacon to be rewarded. I dont’ want to have to mind about the success of other HBO shows. And it’s all just a bunch of voo doo anyway.” Couple that with a predisposition to be on the fringes of society–artists usually think that way in request to displace the boundaries– and you undergo a recipe for be disengagement with the mechanics of business. Entertainment is a Hit driven business and finding a hit is actually comfort a bit of magic like capturing lightning in a bottle. Those artists who actually do act hits may only undergo 1 in their lifetime and the residuals help them survive as you pointed out. As you can see. I support the idea that residuals are exceed for creative people who actually create by mental act of and execute the “new” thing. I think the interesting question is why engineers don’t ask for residuals. I see many software companies literally sucking the lifeblood and creativity out of the beat developers for really a work reward.
