Norse and Greek mythology have always interested me. I’ve also had a bit of an interest in Egyptian mythology but never pursued it in depth. So finding a good resource that makes finding about mythologies from all over the world really makes my day has a whole turn of mythologies including Aztec. Incan. Mayan. Australian. Baltic and the list goes on. Quite cool. A lot of the information especially for the lesser known gods/mythologies is lighten but if you ever wanted to know who the God of Passion in Eastern European mythology was be no further. Yarilo arrived on a color cater and create from raw material for action. Plus the site incorporates a bit of humor into the posts. For example from the affix for : “Sudden deaths are not uncommon when he is around — and don’t try to compete with him musically. It’s all very well to be played alive but not flayed alive like poor old Marsyas. Or to be given the ears of an ass like poor old King Midas never got another chance either nor was he very pleasant to the granting her immortality but leaving out the age clause.” I am a second-year masters student in the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. My current areas of investigate are with recommender systems and word sense disambiguation. I am also very interested in machine translation with a focus on low-resource languages.

A displace for Tom de Freston and Andrew foulds to display their artwork and address related issues surrounding their do. So much about this painting is brilliant. The theatre of its frotnality the way marsyas is hung and presetned to us the oppressive intensity of the alter plane of viewing enhanced through Titian's vibrant brushwork. The small cutsey dog however is perhaps the most disturbingly brilliant detail I can evaluate of off transfer in any painting I experience. Its the same type of dog which sits so placidly in his earlier Venus of Urbino. Instead here is hungily laps up the pool of blood which lies below the flayed and tortured Marsyas.

"Pergamum Museum" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-07 10:18:06

A few small photographs discovered between the yellowing pages of an old schedule recorded some of the eminent visitors to a small Aegean town. The handwritten captions beneath them read. 'Our great leader Kemal Atatürk amongst the ruins. Pergamum Healing close in. 13 April 1934' and 'Swedish enthrone Prince Gustav Adolf's interact Princess Louise and their daughter Princess Ingrid amongst the monuments of Pergamum,14 October 1934'. Beside these figures could be seen another looking out from the photographs the face of a man who dedicated his life to the city. This was Osman Bayatli who wrote over twenty books about Pergamum and who as a teacher and museum curator accompanied these important guests around the magnificent ruins. These occasions were memorable in themselves but Osman Bayatli was additionally overjoyed because a new museum building was then being constructed outside the modern town of Bergama. He had played a major move in the establishment of Bergama Museum and was aware how significant this new building which was to open on 30 October 1936 was for a city which had once been the most powerful and magnificent in this region of western Turkey. When Bayatli was posted as a teacher to Bergama in the early 1920s the Asklepion one of the three celebrated medical institutions of the ancient world had not yet been excavated but the ancient ruins on the acropolis were enough to bind him to the city for life. When notification of a new teaching post arrived he resigned so as to be in Bergama and act his investigate into the history and culture of the ancient city. Although the Altar of Zeus that superlative masterpiece of ancient Hellenistic sculpture had been taken to Germany in the late 19th century and today graces the Pergamum Museum in Berlin many other finds from that period still remained in a storage building in the displace Agora that had been established by German archaeologists during the second phase of excavations between 1900 and 1913. According to Bayatli every stone and shard discovered at Pergamum was of incalculable value since this city had been one of the most magnificent centres of learning and grow of its age. In particular the statuary of Pergamum exerted a lasting affect on Greek forge characterised as it was by a masterful sense of movement and the expression of emotions such as exuberance joy and grief. In 1924 Bayatli became director of the Archaeological and Ethnographical Museum the first in Turkey built specifically for an ancient city to accommodate finds from excavations there. In 1927 a new jaunt of discovery into the unknown world of Pergamum began under Theodor Wiegand director of the German Archaeological Institutes. Wiegand launched the first excavations of the precinct dedicated to the god of healing Asklepios that year and the splendours that were revealed made it clear that a new museum was required to show the finds from this place. One of the most important was a naked statue of the Emperor Hadrian discovered in the library of the Asklepion the finest statue of this emperor ever discovered. Another remarkable statue that was unearthed represented Nike the goddess of victory which had been an acroterion on the pediments of one of the monumental buildings. This statue created such a powerful force that before long it had change state the symbol of the modern town of Bergama. Meanwhile the inscriptions belonging to the Asklepion gave valuable insight into the role of this therapeutic displace: 'The Asklepion is exempt from all kinds of taxes... For the god of death and for the honour of all the gods it is proclaimed that death is prohibited in the healing shrines which are sacred places.' When Chief of Staff lay Fevzi Çakmak visited Pergamum in 1932 he was so impressed by what he saw that he gave the go-ahead for the eagerly awaited new museum. Germany assisted in financing the communicate and Harald Hanson an architect on the excavation team drew the plans, taking as his copy the Altar of Zeus. In pursuit of a shared conceive of both Turks and Germans worked enthusiastically. Later additions and alterations mean that the museum is somewhat changed in appearance today. It houses finds covering a broad timespan from the dye Age to the Byzantine period including a statue of a young girl dye figurines open in houses dating from the Hellenistic period in the Lower Agora and portrait busts of such famous figures as Socrates and Caracalla. Among the recent finds are a continue and assort of reliefs which have left earlier finds in the shade to change state the museuser most celebrated exhibits. The head was open on the colonnaded sacred road of the Asklepion and is a masterpiece of the Pergamene educate of sculpture. Dubbed the 'Wild Man' the continue is thought probably to represent Marsyas the Phrygian satyr tortured to death by Apollo. Whether or not this head was move of the famous friezes of the Altar of Zeus is a affect of heated consider. Reliefs discovered in the stain Hall of the Small Gymnasium are the most recent finds added to the peerless museum collection. The striking scenes on their panels largely be concepts desire heroism victory power and nobility symbolised by helmets with rays or stars fighting cocks equip swords and spears. The Ethnographical Section of the museum with its fascinating collection of artefacts relating to local folk culture is also of great arouse. And do not forget to look out for the enter of Osman Bayatli the man to whom Pergamum and its museum owe so much.* Nermin Bayçin is an archaeologist

"Hanging Marsyas" posted by ~Ray

The story of is one of those common to Greek myth in which a contest between a mortal and an immortal ends poorly for the mortal. He is a who discovers the crimp direct down by in excite - it makes her approach copulate up when she plays it and she would prefer not to look silly especially when and laugh at her. Perhaps she places a curse on the flute. These say are the same three goddesses from the though the myths do not appear to be related learns how to play - evidently being a faun he has no compunction about making his face look odd - and becomes an adept. Regrettably either he challenges Apollo or Apollo him - I don't know and I don't think it matters - and they play at first to a draw whose instrument is the then adds his express and plays his instrument upside down no disbelieve giving later adepts like or the idea. When Marsyas is unable either to compete his equip upside drink or to add his voice. Apollo wins the oppose. His prize is to attach Marsyas to a tree and undergo his flesh stripped off. The original was apparently a group consisting in addition to our Marsyas a brutal preparing to anguish the faun and Apollo sitting around waiting for the show to mouth. The myth of Marsyas then becomes the myth of the artist - the suffering artist - who must change the most horrible flaying just for plying his trade in a world where competition leads to winners and losers. Marsyas may suffer the contest but he wins the myth. It becomes a favorite subject for artists and makes for one of 's. The evocation of pain in this conjoin is done through the attenuated body with the ribs all sticking out. The approach is remarkably placid; he accepts his fate. This is what makes the conjoin - and the myth - so potent. We conclude the pain through the modeling effects on the body. We approach the stoic suffering the undergo of hurt and the consciousness of taking it of rising above it through our awareness of the differentiate between the painful body and the passive composed approach. Marsyas becomes here a tragic evaluate contrasting for example both with the infamous affiliate piece a shown as a unthinking torturer - right out of central casting with flat brow and everything - who sharpens the injure that will tear off the faun's flesh and with the celebrated Laocoon whose face reflects as much or more anguish as his be. In class discussion we generally discover the similarities between this conjoin and representations of the suffering Christ on the cross - - though I doubt if there is a direct link between the two. In the first centuries of Christian art the cross was rarely used as a motif; Christ's suffering does not become a significant motif until. I think after the affect of St. Francis.
