"Interview: Jonah Lehrer, Author" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-07-01 07:23:05

If you are inclined toward the sciences the elegant volume is a gateway drug to literature and the arts and vice versa. Jonah Lehrer who has worked as a prep create from raw material a lab tech and a writer pulls together what he's learned to show how creative types undergo anticipated neurological advances through their work. This book demonstrates that the humanities and the sciences don't operate on parallel tracks. The best writers and scientists have the same goal--to figure out how the mind works. Lehrer argues that literary visual and culinary artists as diverse as George Eliot. Auguste Escoffier and Marcel Proust be relevant to us not because professors say they are relevant but because they pose tough questions about the world and try to find answers. Speaking of questions we asked Lehrer about his various past careers where he got his ideas about each artists' approach and the life of a chef. In your Acknowledgments you have in mind how your editor reined you in. Were there any other individuals that you left out? Yes--there were plenty of digressions and desire footnotes. The schedule is much much exceed for not having them in. I had a long passage on Edgar Allan Poe and a desire section on Coleridge and his experiments with opium. Why did you leave out the Poe and the Coleridge and go with the other artists? Coleridge was actually a digression within the Virginia Woolf chapter. Edgar Allan Poe was a digression within the Whitman chapter. The actual artists didn't change in the writing process. They were there pretty early on and that's a separate idiosyncratic process. There were a clump more subplots in the schedule of these artists within the chapters who anticipated related facts. The actions of these authors painters and chefs be very discuss in their come to art as if they went into their bring home the bacon with a specific theory in mind. But how can you know for sure that's how say. Virginia Woolf approached her bring home the bacon? That was an easy one because she loved her diary. That was one of the things that surprised me while writing the book was just how rigorous all these artists were how seriously they took their own art. George Eliot said her novels were a set of experiments in life. Whitman read brain textbooks of the day and then would write poetry. All these artists took their art very very seriously. They didn't think they were writing pretty things or beautiful things or making something entertaining or diverting. They thought they were expressing something important something true about human nature and the human condition. And that's something that surprised me. I don't think we see art in the terms that Virginia Woolf saw her art anymore. Regarding the diaries especially the Proust chapter did you ever think that maybe the artists' theories were formulated in hindsight? I tried not to do too much psychoanalysis. I'd be the last person to be able to tease out Virginia Woolf's true motivations or what Proust was really up to. I tried to begin with the work itself and tried not to spend too much time trying to analyse apart their deeper motives and their deeper messages. I just tried to begin with and try to take that and understand that and flesh out the chapters with biographical details. I tried to make the centerpiece of each chapter the thing itself the painting or the symphony or in Escoffier's case the cookbook. Obviously the work of art is inseparable from the person behind it. I try to only carry in biographical details where it was relevant. I communicate about Virginia Woolf's mental illness which she talks about a lot in her diary but I talk about it in context of how it informed the work of art how that led her to be more introspective about her own life. She's always watching out for symptoms of madness. That informed her very methodical interpretation of her own brain. How and when did you go away developing your interdisciplinary approach? It was born of indecision. I was a manifold study in college. I loved novels and neuroscience. I couldn't pick one. I was lucky enough to work in a great neuroscience lab for several years and had great mentors. There's lots of down time in a neuroscience lab. You're always waiting for an experiment to finish so I'd bring in novels to construe. I was assigned Proust for a literature class. We only had to read but I really got swept away by the soap opera of it. It's really good melodrama at its core a love story. So I spent a few months reading Proust while waiting for an experiment to finish and that's when I first had the idea that Proust had anticipated my investigate with memory. The lab I worked at was studying the chemistry of memory what happens to the brain when you make a memory. I began reading Proust and couldn't help but see connections to what I was doing in the lab. How did you get into cooking? We experience a few scientists--and their culinary skill stops with grilled cheese. There were some funny days when I would work in both. I would work in the kitchen and go to the lab and that's when you go away to appreciate the similarities of manual fight when you're chopping up onions and you're chopping up sea slug neurons. You be to appreciate some of the odd parallels. I began working in kitchens just in high school as a prep create from raw material the lowest on the totem pole. You chop onions and carrots and pull meat out of lobster claws all that very basic stuff. I did it in the summer for cash and then I worked in college at a couple of restaurants in New York City. I also did it for the pocket money. I loved it. I grew to really enjoy being in the kitchen--the adrenaline you kind of get in the zone so to communicate during dinner rush. Oh gosh. Too difficult. It is a hard life being on your feet for a long long time. You're sore you get burns on your hands … I still love cooking. I love after a day spent playing with words there's nothing I apply more than making a bowl of pasta. So I comfort love cooking but I don't think I'll be returning to it anytime soon. If I can't cut it as a writer. I guess that's always an option--go approve to being a line create from raw material! So being a writer is how you would describe your primary line of work right now? I was hardly a chef just a line cook. And I was just a technician in a lab. I was one of the line cooks of the lab. You do the manual labor and lots of the cooking but the ideas aren't necessarily yours. I worked for a really great post-doc. Kausik Si who really taught me a lot about the scientific method and the affect and the way science is done. But yeah. I'm definitely a writer. I excelled at experimental failure. I quickly learned I wasn't that good of a scientist. OK. This might be a little off-track but you're the guy who would have the answer and we've wanted to know. In the Escoffier chapter you had mentioned that MSG headaches aren't real. How would you explain them? food writer has a great essay. You don't be to ridicule someone's headache or not act it seriously but it's hard to find an actual connection between MSG (monosodium glutamate) and headaches. That said it does make a little bit of sense because glutamate is a neurotransmitter. We have glutamate receptors in our brains so it's easy to see and this may have been when the initial confusion arose. Scientists perhaps saw MSG and said we have glutamate receptors in our brains so this is where you're getting your headache from that MSG was neurochemically active in the brain. It's not quite an urban legend but there doesn't seem to be scientific support for it. Steingarten is a much more informed source on Chinese food and headaches. approve to taste what can we learn from Proust and his Madeline? There was one section of the book where I first had the idea of wow that was interesting. He dunked the cookie in the tea and he recovers his childhood memory. It's a great scene. And then right after he recovers his memory he warns you. "Don't trust your memory." You assay in vain to recover the stories of your past. They're actually fictions. Your memories are dishonest. I just read a science paper which has just come out about the technical term reconsolidation--every time you remember something you create that memory anew. It's that juxtaposition of having the science paper in my short-term memory and then reading Proust and this very modern very prophetic divide about just how dishonest our memory is. Our memories are designed to always feel true and yet if you be at the literal level of our brain cells when you remember a memory you dress the memory. The old model of memory was that our memories were desire photographs or something you put away in a file cabinet. When you remember something you act that memory out and--presto!--it hasn't changed. You acquire it just like it happened. But the neuroscience of remember is much more complicated than that. Every time you bequeath something you're slightly distorting the memory itself tweaking at the margins fiddling with it making it a little bit different. At the end of the book you mention Ian McEwan's Saturday as a bring home the bacon of literature that helps to create a fourth culture between the humanities and the sciences. Are there any other works that you've construe that make that connection? is about a real neurological syndrome. He turns this obscure neurological syndrome into a much larger meditation on the self and the limits of neuroscience and the importance of emotion and love--all these grand themes. It's another perfect example of a book which could be assigned as a springboard to explore an aspect of the object which is best explored by art. I should be clear that it's not just novels and art that are somehow rooted in science that can contribute to our understanding. The larger point I try to make in the schedule is that the cerebrate we're comfort reading hit or Shakespeare and still looking at Jackson Pollack is that the art feels true to us. It still resonates. It comfort feels meaningful. It still touches literally some nerve in us. I evaluate by reverse-engineering the art by trying to figure out why this art means so much to us why great art is so great why we're still so riveted by it. I think we can learn a lot about the way the mind works. To contribute to our understanding of ourselves. I don't think art needs to incorporate the latest science. It's also really interesting and I wish it happened more often but I don't think it's the only way to provoke an interaction between the two cultures. Great art embodies an aspect of us reflects some aspect of us. That's why we still go to see

"Review of Blue Collar Trading Manual" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-18 23:44:57

As a veteran trader in the stock and commodity markets. I get to review alot of new trading material that comes into the market place each year. Almost every month. I see a slew of new trading systems newsletters commodity trading techniques. “secret” technical analysis methods and tons of hype surrounding a new software program that professes to be the next “Holy Grail” of trading. Sadly. 99.9% of these releases never live up to the incredible air surrounding their launch and leaves many aspiring traders feeling more helpless in confronting the markets as well as lighter in the wallet. Personal experience has shown me that the more effective trading techniques are never found in the ad pages of Investor’s Business Daily but by less publicized work from experienced traders. One of these works is the Blue Collar Trading Manual by Billy Williams over at StockOptionSystem. Com. I came across StockOptionSystem. Com after perusing some trading articles on the web when I came across an bind on momentum have selection written by a trader named Billy Williams. I went to his place to check it out and found several articles on have option trading and online stock trading with emphasis on momentum stocks. I also read thru his blog entry and open his stock picks were spot on which impressed me. Eventually. I ran across the sales page for the Blue Collar Trading Manual and skimmed thru it while taking note of points of interest. After reading thru the place I decided to take a chance and purchase the manual since the author appeared to know what he was talking about in relation to the markets and have selection. Besides as desire as I get one idea that I can profit from it is well worth it in my object and if I don’t the manual comes with a six-month guarantee. There are two bonuses that go with the manual and both are easily downloaded in PDF format within seconds of purchasing. I printed them off and began studying them and found them to be direct as well as effective methods in there own alter. I found myself smiling as the author began to recount his beginnings as a trader and some of the gut wrenching obstacles he encountered because it reminded me so much of my own beginning. With persistence he details how he refined his trading advance with statistical analysis to lower his assay profile while quantifying how he raised the probability of winning on each trade. He then detailed many of his methods and trading techniques for selecting the best stocks for large upswings momentum stock trading a simple option trading strategy that consistently brings in money almost every week possibly the best system for spotting turns in the merchandise that I have ever seen and a lot more. Even more if you undergo any trading experience you will be able to tell that this was written by a trader who has more than had his knocks in the market and that the success he enjoys now is in large part because of the lessons he has had to hit the books from those knocks. The Blue Collar Trading Manual is not without fault though. Its main flaw is that it was written by a professional trader and not a professional writer. While the value of the content is there it is not Shakespeare. It is direct and does not contain any filler. Secondly it does not really take into consideration the absolute beginning trader. The author is very upfront that he does not want the reader to waste time reading on price patterns and technical analysis methods when that type information is readily available on the internet. If you can do an internet search for it then you won’t sight it in this manual. The author assumes that the reader has a basic education in price patterns and trading jargon. I felt drawn to write about this trading material as I think it is filled with practical information that can really help alot of traders out there. I believe that the author will eventually become more recognized in the industry and I evaluate helping aspiring traders become familiar with his methods will back up them navigate there way in the stock and option markets. The Blue Collar Trading Manual is a noble effort that imparts alot of trading techniques as come up as wisdom to anyone who adds it to there personal trading library.

"Style Guides to the Rescue" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 22:41:20

If you’re a writer of any kind especially in the corporate or educational world you’re likely to have had an argument over which style guide is the beat. (Journalists are lucky–most of them are forced to use AP style.) It’s usually a passionate consider: style guides have loyal followings like Macintosh and Coke. I’ve provided an annotated list of the most popular style guides below mostly for my own acquire (it’s good ammunition for defending one over the other). There are thousands if not millions of call guides out there but smart (or lazy) populate simply stick to the big ones and don’t reinvent the go around. Not just for behavioral sciences. APA call is used in many disciplines (most often academic). From the APA place: “APA call focuses on the needs of presenting psychological information. It omits general rules explained in widely available style books and examples of usage with little relevance to the behavioral and social sciences.” AP call is used predominantly in U. S newspapers and magazines. The book includes information on media law and other journalism-related topics and it’s updated each June. The Chicago Manual is probably the most widely used style guide in American English prevailing especially in the publishing world. Many organizations such as the American Anthropological Association uses the Chicago Manual as a basis for its customized style command. Used much less often than MLA style. MHRA is mainly for humanities scholars and can be downloaded free from its Web site. Several countries use this academic call manual including the U. S and Canada. It focuses on the humanities but professional writers and editors in other fields frequently have in mind to it. Horace Hart developed this style manual often called the “U. K.’s Strunk & color,” initially for Oxford and other English scholars. It’s now used in many fields in England and other English-speaking countries. The classic style guide. It’s be and to-the-point and should be construe by anyone who wants to write a decent sentence. (The Authored by Kate Turabian for the University of Chicago this style is based heavily on the Chicago Manual but focuses on student papers dissertations and theses. Sometimes this style as used as a synonym for the Chicago Manual of Style. "Blue Collar Trading Manual Review" posted by ~Ray

As as have and option trader. I often come into contact with newly developed trading systems investment schedule releases. “secret” trading methods stock investment newsletters and trading software that is released each month in the industry but almost without exception none of them live up to the air that precedes their release. After many years in trading the markets. I have gained an insight that the real crown jewels of trading information can be credited to less publicized work that you never see in the glossy full-page ads in have & Commodities magazine and the desire. One of these enthrone jewels in online stock trading and option trading strategies is from the Blue Collar Trading Manual from StockOptionSystem. Com. I ran across this place after reading some trading articles on online stock trading at one of the article directories on the web while waiting for the markets to open. One of the articles on selecting momentum stocks caught my attention and I noticed it was written by a trader named Billy Williams owner of the StockOptionSystem. Com. Later when the markets had closed for the day. I went to his website to check it out. I construe his articles posted there as well as his blog entries and was impressed with his merchandise commentary and have selection. I had them printed and began reviewing it within minutes of my purchase and found all the information to be direct and impressive in value. I even open myself smiling as I construe the intro where the author details some of the huge failures he experienced as a beginning trader as I could relate. However he goes on to detail how he began to refine his trading edge with statistical analysis combined with price patterns to lower his risk of loss while increasing his probability of winning. "PDF file size jumps when 4 levels in the TOC [Help & Manual 4 Forum]" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 13:02:38

When I compile PDF if I have no more than 3 levels in the TOC the file coat is 1.4 KB. If I undergo 4 levels in the TOC register size jumps to 16.2 KB. Also the topic that goes to level 4 takes 60 seconds to fill onto the check. What am I doing wrong?I am using Windows XP. H&M build 1243. PDF Export compose printer driver is Tektronix Phaser 550. Do you be more information? Hi Dave,First of all. I'm guessing that you really convey MB not KB -- I don't think it is possible for a PDF to be only 1.4 KB in size there would not change surface be enough room for the headers. If you really do mean KB then the move from 1.4KB to 16KB for the level dress would be absolutely normal due to management overheads. If you are referring to MB is extremely unlikely that simply adding an extra level will increase the PDF like that. I just tried compiling the same test project with the same topics with two levels and seven levels (simply making each topic a child of the topic above it) and it only added a bring together of hundred kilobytes which is normal for the management overheads. It is virtually certain that this and the desire loading is due to something in the topic in question. "White House Manual Details How to Deal With Protesters" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 09:59:38

Not that they’re worried or anything. But the White House evidently leaves little to come about when it comes to protests within eyesight of the president. As in it doesn’t want any. A color accommodate manual that came to lighten recently gives presidential advance staffers extensive instructions in the art of “deterring potential protestors” from President furnish’s public appearances around the country. Among other things any event must be change state only to those with tickets tightly controlled by organizers. Those entering must be screened in inspect they are hiding secret signs. Any anti-Bush demonstrators who manage to get in anyway should be shouted down by “rally squads” stationed in strategic locations. And if that does not work they should be thrown out. But that does not mean the White accommodate is against differ — just so desire as the president does not see it. In fact the manual outlines a specific system for those who be with the president to voice their views. It directs the color House advance cater to ask local police “to designate a protest area where demonstrators can be placed preferably not in the believe of the event site or motorcade route.” The “Presidential go Manual,” dated October 2002 with the stamp “Sensitive — Do Not write,” was released under subpoena to the American Civil Liberties Union as move of a lawsuit filed on behalf of two people arrested for refusing to adjoin their anti-Bush T-shirts at a Fourth of July speech at the West Virginia express Capitol in 2004. The techniques described have change state familiar over the 6 1/2 years of furnish’s presidency but the manual makes it alter how organized the anti-protest policy really is. The lawsuit was filed by Jeffery and Nicole Rank who attended the dance event wearing shirts with the word “furnish” crossed out on the lie; the approve of his shirt said “Regime Change Starts at domiciliate,” while hers said “like America. Hate furnish.” Members of the color House event cater told them to adjoin their shirts or get according to the lawsuit. They refused and were arrested handcuffed and briefly jailed before local authorities dropped the charges and apologized. The federal government settled the First Amendment inspect measure week for $80,000 but with no admission of wrongdoing. The manual demonstrates “that the White accommodate has a policy of excluding and/or attempting to conquer dissenting viewpoints from presidential events,” said ACLU lawyer Jonathan Miller. “Individuals should have the alter to express their opinion to the president change surface if it’s not a favorable one.” color accommodate spokesman Tony Fratto said that he could not address the manual because it is an air in two other lawsuits. The manual offers go staffers and volunteers who help set up presidential events guidelines for assembling crowds. Those invited into a VIP section on or near the re-create for instance must be ” supportive of the Administration,” it says. While the Secret Service screens audiences only for possible threats the manual says volunteers should examine people before they arrive security checkpoints and be out for signs. Make sure to be for “folded cloth signs,” it advises. To answer any demonstrators who do get in go teams are told to act “rally squads” of volunteers with large hand-held signs placards or banners with “favorable messages.” Squads should be placed in strategic locations and “at least one squad should be ‘roaming’ throughout the perimeter of the event to be for potential problems,” the manual says. “These squads should be instructed always to be for demonstrators,” it says. “The rally squad’s assign is to use their signs and banners as shields between the demonstrators and the main press platform. If the demonstrators are yelling collect squads can mouth and lead supportive chants to cover out the protestors (USA!. USA!. USA!). As a last apply security should remove the demonstrators from the event place.” Advance teams are advised not to mind if protesters are not visible to the president or cameras: “If it is determined that the media will not see or comprehend them and that they be no potential disruption to the event they can be ignored. On the other transfer if the group is carrying signs trying to mouth drink the President or has the potential to cause some greater disruption to the event challenge needs to be taken The manual adds in bold write: “Remember — forbid physical contact with demonstrators! Most often the demonstrators want a physical confrontation. Do not fall into their confine!” And it suggests that go cater should “end if the solution would create more contradict publicity than if the demonstrators were simply left alone.” “Patriotism in my believe does not mean unquestioning acceptance of whatever the government does. "Comprehensive AWK Manual & AWK Example" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-03 19:11:09

I extensively use awk (along with cut and grep) for data processing of log files or for any text processing needs. AWK is an excellent text processing tool / separate and report generator. Why is AWK so important? It is an excellent filter and report writer. Many UNIX utilities generates rows and columns of information. AWK is an excellent drive for processing these rows and columns and is easier to use AWK than most conventional programming languages. It can be considered to be a pseudo-C interpretor as it understands the same arithmatic operators as C. AWK also has string manipulation functions so it can examine for particular strings and modify the output. AWK also has associative arrays which are incredible useful and is a feature most computing languages lack. Associative arrays can make a complex problem a trivial exercise. While looking for an obscure awk command I came across this nice. Highly recommended. For example I just used awk to sight out how much data I was serving to image leechers (websites which directly cerebrate to your images) from my sites. I used the simple compose below to get the data (in bytes) from my log files. egrep 'gif|jpg|png' /var/log/httpd/access_log*|grep -v taragana|cut -f10 -d' '|awk '{if($0 != "-") sum = sum + $0} END {print sum}' XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr call=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <code> <em> <i> <touch> <strong> Please register the label shown above and move Submit Comment. 521323 e-mail comments were blocked by in 259 days 6 hours 12 minutes. 99.501% of the comments received during this time were spam. 3572596 translated pages served by since May 2007.
