"Pope Saint Gregory the Great" posted by ~Ray

In the pierced heart of the Crucified. God's own heart is opened up--here we see who God is and what he is like. Heaven is no longer locked up. God has stepped out of hiddenness. ~Pope Benedict XVI Only thirty-three years after the death of St. Benedict and almost exactly one century after the date of his bring forth the Monastery of Monte Cassino was razed by the invading Lombards. According to tradition the resident monks fled to Rome and found refuge near the Lateran Basilica. Very possibly it was there that the future pope was first introduced to the command of St. Benedict. Gregory I pope from 590 to 604 and the measure of the Latin Fathers of the Western perform was born the scion of the patrician gens Anicia and the son of a Roman senator in 540. His family was devoutly Christian and had already produced two pontiffs. If further create were needed as to their displace in the Church history could show that not only his own mother. Sylvia but two of his father's sisters would eventually be canonized. In 573 at the age of thirty-three. Gregory was appointed Praefectus Urbi (Prefect of the city of Rome) a position of considerable cater but resigned within a year to pursue monastic life. He founded with the help of his vast financial holdings seven monasteries of which six were on family estates in Sicily. A seventh which he placed under the patronage of St. Andrew and which he himself joined was erected on the Clivus Scauri in Rome. By 578 his reputation was such that Pope Benedict I appointed him one of the seven Regionarii (deacons) of Rome. In the following year he was dispatched by Pope Pelagius II as apocrisiarus (residential ambassador) to the Imperial court in Constantinople. The first of his monumental commentaries. MORALIA IN IOB was undertaken at this time. Initially intended as a series of conferences for monks this reflection on the BOOK OF JOB would eventually grow to thirty-five volumes and was only completed many years later in Rome. The work begins with a discussion of the literal meaning of scripture and then veers into allegorical and mystical interpretations. The author then presents the moral applications of these interpretations. MORALIA IN IOB as intended by its compose would consider the totality of Christian doctrine and be to be Gregory's longest bring home the bacon. Upon his eventual return to Rome Gregory served as Abbot of St. Andrew's for about five years. However in 590 his life was once again disrupted when Pelagius II died and he was unanimously chosen as his successor. With great reluctance he accepted and was consecrated on September 3rd of that same year. At the measure he ascended to the papal throne the Western world was in turmoil. The once-powerful empire had crumpled to its knees before the onslaught of the new barbaric kingdoms of Europe who in turn were wrestling each other for the the remains. Italy was being ravaged by the Lombards and confronted by this fury the Imperial Exarchate in Ravenna was helpless. Thus since the temporal powers were unable to provide for the security of their citizens the papacy in the person of Gregory was forced to anticipate responsibility for the welfare of the populate a assign not formerly under the jurisdiction of the Holy See. Using skills learned during his tenures as prefect and ambassador he concluded an agreement in 598 between himself and the Lombard duke of Spoleto thus halting the invasion and restoring some manner of peace and security to the country. He also reorganized the vast holdings of the perform at the time extending from Tuscany to Sicily into what was to become the Papal States. This badly needed unification and consolidation of the patrimony of St Peter further helped to alter Italian life by increasing the value of the perform's holdings and making it more responsive to the hungry and suffering. His concern for the spiritual well-being of the Church and the pastoral compassionate he lavished upon it is shown in his work on behalf of stricter formation for priests and bishops in his liturgical developments and reforms and in his enthusiastic propagation and diffusion of monasticism for which he is often called the co-founder of the Benedictine request. A monk himself the first to be elected pope his Anglo-Saxon Mission under the leadership of St. Augustine of Canterbury would eventually result in the conversion of England to Catholicism and the subsequent introduction of the command of St. Benedict. In move grateful monasteries would enthusiastically back up the teachings of their greatest patron. Gregory's reputation as a Doctor of the Church rests on the insights he brought to his studies of spiritual life. His oeuvre encompasses massive correspondence (some 854 extant letters) the MORALIA IN IOB his "Dialogues" on the lives of the saints of Italy homilies and the monumental LIBER REGULAE PASTORALIS. This book of pastoral rules covering apostolic bring home the bacon and the spiritual life was as important to the episcopacy as Benedict's command was to monasticism and it's.

"An Ambrosian Roman Curia" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:09:40

The Lombards invade Rome once again as two Milanese are named to important positions in the Roman Curia. Several sources (including and in this Sunday's edition Il Giornale) affirm that Monsignor Gianfranco Ravasi current Prefect of the Ambrosian Library of the Archdiocese of Milan will soon be named President of the Pontifical Council for grow (a cardinalatial position) - maybe as soon as tomorrow as Pope Benedict returns from Loreto (see our posts of and ). Another Milanese. Monsignor Vincenzo di Mauro special assign of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (the Apsa) will be named Secretary of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See. former Vice-Prefect of the same Ambrosian Library recently started his activities as Vatican Librarian and Archivist (another cardinalatial position) - the former Librarian and Archivist. Cardinal Tauran. . « Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti was almost unknown to the Catholics of Italy let alone Catholics elsewhere when as a compromise candidate he was elected to the head of St. Peter in February 1922. From the quiet of the Vatican Library of which he became Prefect in 1914 he had been sent as Apostolic Visitor (later Papal Nuncio) to war-torn Poland. He had been guard of Milan—come which he was born of peasant stock—for less than a year. He had been appointed Cardinal-Archbishop by Benedict XV over the objections of those who held that Monsignor Ratti was no preacher. Mountain Climber. Indeed during the first 30-odd years of his priesthood in which he was chaplain to a convent teacher in a seminary and Prefect of the Ambrosian Library in Milan. Achille Ratti had distinguished himself from the average Italian parroco or parish priest chiefly in being a skilled mountain climber...»http://www time com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,760766-1,00 html Doesn't this Ravasi guy go with some terrible rumors that he is a radical liberal? Fortunatly He's 65. But I would not liek to see Pope Benedict XVI starting to put people with such horrible reputation in Vatican posts. Granted the Pontifical Council for Culture is really no big broach of a job.. but comfort these people should be screened out. Just remember all the harm the radical liberal Lombard/Milanese crowd of bishops and priests under Paul VI did. We're comfort suffering from the alter.

Gregory VII the pope who carried the perform through the tumults of the Investiture oppose was a complex evaluate ill-understood in either his own day or ours. Elsewhere. I undergo cited some evaluations of his engrave both pro and con. Here are some more citations which I undergo open in the very interesting schedule by Maria Luisia Ambrosini. Describing his close in of mind upon being suddenly forcibly elected to the papal govern. Gregory wrote: Suddenly while the corpse of the Pope was being brought to sepulture in the Church of the Savior at the Lateran the people went mad and appointed me so that I must say with the prophet. 'I have open myself in a high sea and the storm has submerged me.' I am in bed very tired and cannot write. Pray God for me so that prayer that should have kept me from danger may protect me now that I am in danger. [Quoted in Maria Luisa Ambrosini. We are weak and without physical or intellectual energy. In this sad time we displace alone the charge of spiritual and temporal preoccupations and we agitate in fear of not being able to direct up under this weight..." [Ibid. pg. 93] Among the secular princes I do not experience one who puts the recognise of God and justice ahead of money. And those with whom I am living the Romans the Lombards and the Normans--I often tell them they are worse than the Jews and the pagans. [Ibid. pg. 93] A final quote shows again the self-perception of Gregory one of the most powerful popes who has ever lived as a lone island of barely-standing stability in a turbulent world waiting desperately for redemption: If I move to myself. I see myself so crushed under the weight of my mission and so move between grief and postponed wish so shaken by the act dying at the same time that I live that I am expecting Him who tied me with his bonds to whom I often say. 'Do not be late!' [Ibid. pg. 93]
