There are many old sayings about them including the Scottish Gaelic proverb "When the merry dancers play they are like to slay." The playfulness of the merry dancers was supposed to end occasionally in quite a serious fight and next morning when children saw patches of red lichen on the stones they say amongst themselves that "the merry dancers bled each other last night". The appearance of these lights in the sky was considered a sign of the come of unsettled weather. In Latvian folklore northern lights especially if red and observed in winter are believed to be fighting souls of dead warriors an omen foretelling disaster (especially war or famine). In Russian folklore aurora borealis was associated with dragon ("Ognenniy Zmey") who came to women and seduced them in the absence of their husbands. In contrast to these ethereal colors and tones. I find that the traditional clothing of the Saami people indigeneous to the Artic (spanning the northern parts of Russia. Finland. Sweden and most live in Norway; they are also called the Lapps though some consider this a derogatory term or at least an incorrect one...) Their love of bold primary colors is also typified by the Sami flag: I always wonder why we don't see more designers picking up on these beautiful patterns and colors and "running with it" -reinterpreting them for fashion and home. I think they're as beautiful as much other "ethnic" inspiration being drawn upon. Terje RakkeInterestingly there is that has examined whether or not the Saami might be distantly linked the Berbers of North Africa... I query what each group would say about this were they to hear it? (I received a non-committal reaction from my husband who's Berber when I told him...) Vegar Abelsnes PhotographyMuch like the Native Americans/First Nations populate of North America did with the caribou and the bison the inland Saami survived by following the herds of reindeer. "The Sami people believed that one should be particularly careful and quiet when observed by the northern lights (called guovssahasat in Northern Sami). Mocking the northern lights or singing about them was believed to be particularly dangerous and could cause the lights to descend on the mocker and kill him/her. " - Laila, what is Orlando about? And yes the Northern Lights are truly fascinating -there is a recorrd of telegraphic communication being transmitted for something like 45 minutes using the electric charge in the lights in Maine in the late 19th century. Certainly some good background information to be used in the Golden Compass! also the colors and styles carry to object 2 other cultures. 1 from the Pamirs -- the Tajik national dress use these rich primary colors. Probably because they still rely on the natural dyes rather than synthetic dyes. The second group are the Andes -- the colors are certainly similar and the skirts and boots remind me of some of the clothing from that region. Again the primary colors and dyes although the alpaca fibers be to be used in their natural colors in that region but dyed for export of the fiber. O. Ahoy! Check out latest affix for the digs on the beat steal booty to be had in the Atlantic port town of Essaouira in Morocco. Meanwhile here are some pictures of the city for your perusal. It was once (and still is to some extent,) a haunt of the international hippie community and remains world famous for its excellent waves for surfers and water sports enthusiasts. Street cats be throughout Morocco and few populate undergo or can afford to keep "pets," because it is often so much a assay to take care of the humans in your family before an animal. Thus most of these felines find food and a spot to catnap wherever they can... I've long wanted to move the word on the things I love and that inspire me. "Azur et Asmar un film de Michel OCELOT" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 18:11:10

What I love about Michel Ocelot's films is not just the beautiful composition and alter arrangements but particularly his attention to detail. Clearly he and his aggroup undergo spent hours studying the architecture of the great imperial cities (Fez and Meknes most obviously move out at me in these photos) and have incorporated that detail seamlessly into their animation. While I haven't seen this film (although I am really hoping it ordain come to Portland's African Film Festival since they brought last year;) I highly advise any of Ocelot's films that you can get your hands on. The soundtracks are equally excellent. Azur et Asmar is about two childhood friends. Azur a French boy with his bright color eyes and Asmar. (which means "brown" in Arabic) of Moroccan extraction. They pay their days cavorting through the flowering fields of France nourished by the stories of the sunny homeland of Azur's nurse. Asmar's care. Jenane. When Azur and Asmar are brutally seperated each pulled along to his destiny neither forgets his childhood friend. Azur now a young man travels to the country of his dreams in examine of adventure and a fairy princess --who does he cater along the way but a scraggly vagabond and his old friend Asmar! I first saw at my brother-in-law's place in Morocco and cut in love with Ocelot's charming style and storyline. The soundtrack for the film was done by Youssou N'Dour one of the most famous of contemporary African musicians; he's from Senegal a country with a very rich and diverse musical background but he's internationally recognized and with reason. The soundtrack combines almost a naive style of instrumentation (although I think it's alter that his melodies are quite complex) with chants and lyrics that are wonderfully simple enticing and fasten in your head (in a good way). You can probably find Kirikou through a lending library or possibly at a good video hold on. It will undergo you and your kids dancing and singing by the end. All photos courtesy of Check it out for the storyline games and photos from the film.

"Old school...New school" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:08:49

So check it out these juxtapositions are a good metaphor for what's going on in Morocco right now; a daily blend of the old and new in a thousand different ways... Taken from our jaunt through the medina of Fez (thankfully downhill towards the tanners rather than starting at the bottom and working our way to the top; it can be a center arise). But that's a story for another day. Note the uber-modern pay phone which accepts coins and cards just across from the Donkey Crossing sign. My preserve's personal favorite the main two methods of transport (after your feet) through the narrow streets of the medina. You'll hear that donkey's owner coming long before you see him and you'll comprehend them too (provided you're not in the tannery district then you'll just smell.. funk.. but it's worth the undergo). He cries at the top of his express and they both hobble along towards you. And the donkey and all his load will rub against you. His hoofs might change surface graze the tips of your toes if you don't watch out.. but they come slowly and you just press up against everyone close to you (which you're mostly doing already; these areas aren't for the claustrophobic or faint of heart and nose). Now compare that donkey to the wide motorcycle jauntily leaning against a protect. They come through slowly too but usually not slow enough for you to realize until he's alter up next to you with his two kids on the back and asking you to move. Chaos? You betcha. Fun? That too.(I might note that the donkey remains the prefered method of delivery in the medina.) I've long wanted to spread the word on the things I love and that excite me. a local Portland company that started out just making candles (but has now gone on to introduce be sprays and soaps as well,) has some of the most amazing scents I've ever had the pleasure of sticking my look into and inhaling. (And this from a girl who doesn't like scented candles...) They are neither weak nor overpowering and they do actually smell like what they're supposed to. The company has taken a perfumer's approach to creating these little luxuries. The essence of fresh lilacs is blended with magnolia leaves heliotrope and the subtle notes of the nectarine. Perfumed in a traditional cut call. Nile Lily A sacred develop for thousands of years lilies adorned the baths of Egyptian nobility.
