"My 8 String's construction - start to finish (56k will be a while)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-11 12:28:38

My 8 String's construction - start to finish (56k will be a while) Extended Range Guitars - Welcome to everyone from ERG com. Eight. Nine. Baritone and beyond discussion here. Welcome to sevenstring org! You are currently viewing the site as a guest which gives you limited access to most features. Hey guys. I managed to get all the pics of my 8 string's build in one place. So here ya go. I barely had any tools and everything I did I learned in a 4 month class at the local college and from reading Project Guitar. Hope you guys dig it. I drew the dimensions out as accurately as possible. If you know the scale length you should know exactly where everything should go. Once that was done. I made sure I had all of my wood ahead of time. That's a one piece block of mahogany ($80 CDN) and two 1 inch x 3.25 inch x 48 long purpleheart boards ($10 CDN) The black templates were out of heavy bristol board. Tried to figure out what part of the wood would look best. I ended up changing the template so the body was wider here's the original cutout with a hipshot 8 bridge. I really liked the body shape until i put the body where i normally play and the upper horn was going to stab in the face. I thought that would suck so i heavily changed the upper horn. I have no pics of the glueup of the scarf joint which truly sucks. So here's the purpleheart neck with the truss cavity cut. Put on the birdseye maple fretboard and headstock bookmatch birdseye. A mock up with the body - before cutting the neck pocket. That in itself was a horrific experience. The bearing on the router bit had the collar slip and there was a brutal gouge. I learned a lot about epoxy at this point. I actually don't have a picture of it because i was too bitter about it at the time. Control cavity - router template shifted.. grrr. Back shot after a lot of sanding DoneIt's got it's flaws but when i started this. I hadn't touched a wood tool since grade 9 and knew squat. Hope you guys dig this. Hadn't touched a tool since year 9 eh? That's really impressive. I like it especially the body at the end real nice colour. Looks fucking sweet. I must say. I actually prefer the newer body shape. It kinda reminds me of the horns on the 006/007 and thats cool. Glory and praise to Thee. Satan on high,Where Thou didst reign in Hell where Thou dost lie,Vanquished silent dreaming eternally. Grant that my soul some day rest close to TheeUnder the Tree of Knowledge which shall spreadIts branches like a Temple overhead. ~Charles BaudelaireBrutal Skullfucking Death Metal The neck and the head looks really nice. Can't say the same about the body but the neck joint looks nice. I really think you should try to build some more guitars it looks promising. Powered by vBulletin 3.7.3Copyright ©2000 - 2008. "New 7 Build - zebrawood/padouk" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 02:26:59

Welcome to sevenstring org! You are currently viewing the site as a guest which gives you limited access to most features. I've been working on this new communicate the past two weekends and I just finished slotting the trussrod channel (no pics.. sorry.) I spent most of today making templates for the pickups (mabye EMG 707/81-7 or 2 JB-7's) and the bridge (hipshot 7 trem). It's a pretty thick zebrawood 2 conjoin cap over mahogany/flamed maple/mahogany backing. The neck padouk. I've got a flamed maple fretboard to use on this and I've a neat inlay idea going on.. wish I can displace it off. It's going to be 25.5 as I've got smaller hands. Dude.. i just got a spam email that was titled "Funky go out assail trick" I just got another funny telecommunicate "Her pussy smiled at me" -Zepp88 Looks good so far! That's going to be a bright sounding guitar. Why are you using flamed maple then covering it with zebrawood? Is the pet flatsawn? ordain padouk be stiff enough if used flatsawn? Can flamed maple be used for fingerboards? It's not recommended by Warmoth. flame maple is used by jackson in the phil collen sig as a fingerboard man this is gonna be a great guitar put in some warm pickups such as the EMG or bare knuckles and it ordain emit! That thing's giving me some serious (zebra)wood.... Shut up. I couldn't think of anything else perverted to say. Powered by vBulletin 3.7 RC1Copyright ©2000 - 2008. Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. Sevenstring Guitars Discuss all aspects of seven string guitars here. Attention: measure reply in this thread was more than 2 Months ago . is finally end and I am very happy with the result! Mable is her name and she plays sounds and feels wonderful to me. Hopefully that isn't taken as bragging. I'm just really happy with this guitar! top: maple (carved inside and outside)back: mahogany (carved inside)pet: mahoganyfingerboard: ebonyscale: 26.25" (halfway between 25.5" and 27.0")frets: jumbo stainless steelbridge: hipshotpickups: Warmothfinish: 3 coats of Tung-Oil On with the pictures: Wow. Those are some seriously nice woods! Why did you opt to go for a zero fret on your newest one? So YOU are the one that bought up some of those last Warmoth pickups! I wanted to get my hands on one of their 7-string connect pickups but the last one was sold just before i called! VERY nice job man looks every nicer than the last one! That's pretty damn nice. What does a zero worry do? I don't experience but I'm guessing that it changes the appear of an open string to sound more like a fretted arrange. Wow that is gorgeous I also like the revision to the headstock to give a straigh string path That's pretty arouse nice. What does a zero fret do? If I recall a zero fret sits in front of the nut and the strings rest on it instead of the nut to create the open string notes. Powered by vBulletin® Version 3.6.8 Copyright ©2000 - 2008. "Tenor Bass Update - Parts?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 18:40:14

Hey guys,I finally got a be and pet for my new tenor bass project. Now I'mready to start shopping around for parts so I thought I'd post a couplepics and ask for some advice. First here are a few quick photos I tooktonight:It's a 32" bass that I will be tuning ADGC (like the be of a normalsix string bass). I undergo a plate Kahler tremolo bridge I will beinstalling. I still need pots pickups knobs tuners a nut cavitycovers strap locks.. there's a lot left to do!First challenge: if my connect is plate should I go with matchingtuners? color might look best with the color of the wood but I don't knowif they would look odd with a big plate tremolo bar on there. Is Hipshotthe most reliable mark to go with?I'm not sure on pickups either; I don't be single coil pickups becauseI'm not a big fan of that traditional Fender appear (and buzz). I've heardgood things about Seymour Duncan but I have no experience with jazzpickups. I'm still debating going passive or active; ordain I need to doextra routing if I want to go with a stacked sing / bass control or willthose pots fit in a regular-sized hole? I'm already going to be taking somuch wood out for the tremolo connect. I don't want to drill even more holesin it if I don't have to. Although I speculate if I'm already routing theheck out of it that would be the best time to add holes for more knobs. A 3-band EQ with a volume and blend would be ideal but a high-endpreamp might blow my budget. Any suggestions on a solid but affordablepickup / preamp combo? I'm a little worried that with the short scale andlight strings it will appear thin so I might be some kind of on-boardpreamp to balance that out and at least bring up the low end. What call of knobs would be good for this thing (assuming I don'tneed to get stacked pots)? I want it to be eye-catching hell it's a tenorbass with a tremolo bar populate exceed be at me when I destroy this suckerout! Stewmac has some dome knobs with collect or abalone tops that arekind of cool. Any favorite gaudy knob designs?I be to get a new nut for it too is graphite (or is it interpret tech?)the beat choice considering the tremolo bridge? Strings getting hung upwould be a big problem. Any ideas or suggestions you guys have would be great. I'm putting my"battle intend" together so I can start shopping for parts and comparingprices. When it's all assembled I evaluate it will be a very fun axe. I can'twait to take it out to the blues jams and get myself in affect.-Jonathan > It's a 32" bass that I will be tuning ADGC (desire the range of a normal> six string bass). Who do you think you are? Alembic? No. be all hardware. My choicefor this bass would be gold hardware but if you already have a chromebridge then alter it all plate. Mixed hardware always looks like sh!t. > I'm not sure on pickups either; I don't be hit coil pickups because> I'm not a big fan of that traditional Fender sound (and go). I've heard> good things about Seymour Duncan but I have no experience with jazz> pickups. This means you just have to act a chance. I personally don't likestacked humbuckers for the sound. I desire the sound of the new Fendernoiseless play pickups. If you don't desire that you might consider EMGwhich I didn't desire (too bright and modern) and were VERY change intensity. Butthey are Active! But the plus is that it's trivial to go volume/pancontrols rather than the standard passive volume/volume. I dislike thedual volume thing. > I'm comfort debating going passive or active; will I be to do> extra routing if I be to go with a stacked treble / bass control or ordain> those pots fit in a regular-sized hole? Passive would be a great way to start out just to test the bass. Theonly fly in the ointment is if you choose active pickups like EMG. That would compel you active from the start. > I'm already going to be taking so> much wood out for the tremolo connect. I don't be to drill change surface more holes> in it if I don't have to. Although I suppose if I'm already routing the> heck out of it that would be the best measure to add holes for more knobs. analyse out not only the EMG active Jazz pickups but also the EMG activestacked knob EQ. It is VERY compact and fits in a standard hit. Iespecially love the three bind version but the drink side is that the"mid" control takes an additional knob (hit). > A 3-band EQ with a volume and amalgamate would be ideal but a high-end> preamp might blow my budget. Any suggestions on a solid but affordable> pickup / preamp combo? > I'm a little worried that with the bunco scale and> light strings it will sound thin so I might need some kind of on-board> preamp to balance that out and at least boost the low end. For my bunco scale basses the problem is not so much sound (althoughthey aren't as cool as full length bass) but the strings tend to feela bit floppy. You get used to it though. It's not as bad as you mightimagine. > What style of knobs would look good for this thing (assuming I don't> need to get stacked pots)? Stewmac has some dome knobs with collect or abalone tops that are> kind of cool. Any favorite gaudy knob designs? The problem is that if you go with the Stacked EQ (desire say from EMG)it rather confines you to color knobs. I usually get Carvin knobswhich are quite nice and go in color chrome or gold that you canchoose to be your hardware to undergo THE look! > I need to get a new nut for it too is graphite (or is it interpret tech?)> the best choice considering the tremolo bridge? Strings getting hung up> would be a big problem. Go check out the parts Carvin sells for cheap. They have graphitenuts. By the way the "ultimate" tremolo is a Floyd Rose! The idea isyou clamp the strings at the nut so all the strings are close to thesame length. This way all the tones "track" when you loosen thestrings. On a bass this might not be so important but it's somethingto think about. You probably could have a clamping metal nut madewithout too much of a problem. On the other hand loosening the clampsto tune the bass is a big hurt in the ass. Just go be at someguitars with Floyd Rose Trems and see what you evaluate. > Any ideas or suggestions you guys have would be great. I'm putting my> "battle plan" together so I can start shopping for parts and comparing> prices. When it's all assembled I think it will be a very fun axe. I can't> wait to take it out to the blues jams and get myself in trouble. If you don't be the single turn hum you can't beat the NordstrandNJ4SV or NJ4SE Jazz sets. The SV's attach the vintage Fender mouth whilethe SE's are a little hotter with a bring up in the low mids. Both arehum-cancelling but comfort have that single turn tone. A lot of thestacked humbuckers out there suffer that. I got mine at."The Sheriff is Near" "Benj" <bjacoby@iwaynet net> wrote.
