"AAR: Malvinas II [Spoiler Alert]" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-08 03:27:32

Jerome (a k a. Angle of contend) a native of Argentina and I had played Malvinas II several times. Each time. AoA played the Argentines while I played the UK. After several losses we switched sides to see if I could do exceed. has been made with the Harpoon community's favourite database the We began as usual with a round of scouting and counter-scouting. AoA had his AEW helos airborne in hopes of locating my surface fleet. I immediately activated the jamming suite on DD Hercules to counter his efforts. While his helos were brightly radiating their position. I ordered my Mirage fighters to creep in and injure them down from low level. Once the UK was effectively blinded. I focused on his Harrier CAP next. The Harriers were much slower than the supersonic Mirage but they carried the lethal Sidewinder AAMs that far out-ranged my own Magic missiles. It was quite a tricky assign to engage them. Luckily he flew his CAP at high altitude so they were clearly seen by my own radar stations on Malvinas and the Hercules. Several were caught from behind and shot down before they even knew I was in the neighbourhood by using Ground-Controlled Intercept solutions. However revenge was swift. In the end. I managed to kill 8 Harriers for the lost of all 12 of my Mirage. It was a center price but it had to be paid. Generally free from Harrier depredation my Trackers roamed the skies. I had grouped my surface forces come Port Stanley to await the invasion force. A sudden missile contend on them was repulsed after using up nearly all my SAMs. However the attack suggested the presence of a submarine so a examine was conducted by Tracker. Sure enough a sub was detected 6nm away from the ships. As the Alouette and Trackers began their attack the submarine showed here teeth by firing a spread of torpedoes back at me. My blood froze when I detected these phenomenal weapons. With a top go of 70 knots there simply would be no flee from them in a straight follow situation. The only defense would be to put a wall of earth between my ships and the torpedoes. The Trafalgar died quickly but she would have been quite surprised to see my ships dart behind the bay. When they reached their Pre-planned Activation Points [PAP] they promptly slammed into the border. Whew that was close. However the tactic was not without cost. DD Sarandi somehow managed to land herself (another stupid game bug) and thus ended up as a partial mission kill. I used the trackers to generally locate the enemy amphibious.

"The Marines' new rocket ship" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 18:39:51

Seen one of these before? Better yet been a pax in one? The new and hopefully improved version of the Marines' work horse the Osprey. Well that was the plan at its inception not really what came about however. When this little puppy was developed some 20 years ago it was to be all the rage. It would fly higher faster and more economically with greater be than anything currently in use. Sounds great on cover and someone decided it would be great in reality. Problem is though all things did not go as planned. Tragically very soon after it was brought online several of them dropped out of the sky. This ended the lives of several of our nations youthful Marines. Fortunately though it was taken out of function and they set about to hold back the bugs and carry it approve to the forefront of aviation. Now it is back and we are told all the bugs have been worked out and it is completely fit for duty. come up I certainly hope so as the Osprey has been put approve into service and for their first rotation in combat. It is actually quite a stunning aircraft one that is sure to awe all that gaze upon it. To see them flying from locate to locate now carrying pax and cargo is to see a vision and triumph go full circle. The Osprey is not desire other aircraft. In fact it bridges the gap between helos and airplanes and does it quite well. You get the benefits of short act offs and landings and the speed and range of conventional planes. To be a pax in one is an all together different story. I have flown in helos of all kinds and some small planes. This is by far the best of both worlds. In a helo when the power is brought up it kind of lurches around a bit and eventually defies gravity. This is not the smoothest of rides. The Osprey however rolls out to its attach on the tarmac brings up the power and then leaps into the air just as easy as you or I rest up. Before you know it you are several hundred feet in the air and accelerating. This is at quite a center go and you are thankful for those four point harnesses. As the fashion picks up momentum and the control begins the transition to airplane pip characteristics you really get a kick in the pants. The Osprey really accelerates and you feel every ounce of power pulling you through the air. You get none of that hurky jerky feeling of the helos and just took off in a fraction of the space needed for a cut. The Osprey is impressive to say the least to check from the ground as come up. They come streaking in desire a plane circle about the landing zone and then convert to helo controls. To see the pilot rub off heaps of speed and altitude is astounding and all with the greatest of ease. Then they simply come to a hover over the LZ and set drink all graceful and gentle like. I was completely overwhelmed by my first flights in helos. This however is a totally new and much more impressive flight. I only hope that they did clear out the bugs and the Osprey continues to undergo a successful career. I experience I am looking send to the next pip in one or even just to see a pip come in out of the leave sky to a perfect landing again.

"Richard Rider on the California fires" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-19 16:30:04

——————————————————————————————— A. The classic brush fire. Rural homes close to brush are hard to save and people are at significant risk if they stay unless they undergo made extraordinary preparations. The roaring blast can be so intense that it can set flammables within the house afire simply from the outside radiant heat (especially curtains). If the residents flee too late the narrow twisting rural roads can lead to melting tires and cars crashing off the road. In the 2003 Cedar fire apparently every person who died was in these rural circumstances. In suburbia the situation is quite different than the country. Aside from those homes abutting brush-rich canyons (brush which should undergo been cleared back to make a firebreak) almost ALL suburban house fires are caused by EMBERS. A one-inch glowing ember lands in a bush beside a house the furnish gradually catches blast and ultimately so does the domiciliate. Flammable wood roofs used to be a problem but few houses today still have such roofs. We Riders replaced our wood shake roof over a decade ago. It would undergo been helpful to know which houses were being actively defended. It helps when one civilian home firefighter can sleep while the other one keeps watch. But because remaining behind to defend one’s domiciliate is wrongly assumed to be illegal we each kept to ourselves and lacked such backup (except in my case since I had an able athletic co-worker). Hence we have yet another example of how government’s overzealous protection of us can unexpectedly put us at greater risk. Suburban fire fighting of these mislabeled “brush fires” is a very serious adult version of the kids’ “whack-a-mole” game. An ember lands on a bush you put it out. Then you run around constantly looking for other embers trying to douse them before they can get a fire going. Ideally you undergo at least two active fire fighters – one on the roof and one running the parameter. But one person often can do the job – at least as long as you undergo a pretty fireproof roof. But government officials suffer what economist Friedrich Hayek called the “fatal conceit” – the egotistical confidence that as central planners they know what’s beat for us all. They’d rather be in a position of issuing edicts than letting informed individuals access risk and choose their personal response. For these politicians and bureaucrats it’s just not a priority to accurately disseminate such specific technologically continuously updated fire information to the public. By now you’ve heard the stories. In 2003 frustrated military helo crews were grounded on the tarmac while CA Dept of Forestry officials demanded helo maintenance records to verify the helos met state specs. Then when they finally were allowed to fly (AFTER most of the urban homes were destroyed) they were required to learn a couple days under bureaucratic supervision to conform to state officials that they actually could do the job. When they finally were put into action it was pretty much a “mopping up” operation. make San Diego County a firefighting dynamo (but doesn’t) is the presence of TENS OF THOUSANDS of disciplined healthy young adults trained in firefighting just itching to back up out. The Navy trains EVERY sailor and officer in at least rudimentary firefighting. Marines are not trained but are more fit and certainly capable of fighting suburban ember fires with little equipment or training – freeing up trained civilian firefighters to do the more arduous bring home the bacon. 11. Our politicians have been very busy doing press conferences and patting each other on the back. But they’ve been largely useless in doing their job – marshalling firefighting resources to battle the flames Sometimes called leadership. They didn’t alter in advance and they did little once the fires started – except demand to get in lie of TV cameras. You’d think it was the Oscars night – with everyone thanking everyone else – wasting time delaying the dissemination of needed info. Rather than staging endless media events our mayor and ESPECIALLY SD County Supervisors should undergo been on the phone to Actor Arnold and President Bush. DEMANDING immediate suspension of bureaucratic bulls-t and the activation of air assets. Hardball blackmail should undergo been used – “Arnold/George if you don’t fix this in 90 minutes we are going to direct a press conference blaming you PERSONALLY for the needless destruction and deaths caused by your heartless inertia and your refusal to override such bumbling.”

Evaluating moments to sight words describing them moments have passed by the time the words to define them are found. I stopped in to see them here in JAX last week. I've heard they're shady but they confirmed it upon meeting with them. Their program is all or nothing with no add-on tracks. They refused to furnish any info beyond what you'd sight in the brochure and they wouldn't let me tour the hangar. A rule of thumb for me is if they won't let me see what MX is doing I don't want to have anything to do with them. All I can say is be away. I undergo read enough about them to fill two books and it is all bad. They take all your give money in three disbursements in the first few months. It takes along time to get though their schedule so you are paying intrest on money you undergo not used yourself. Their is a thread started on another forum called verticalreference com that sums up a recent students undergo. On the other hand I do know of someone that was happy there and finished up at a pace he was happy with I have a few friends in the training department with an operator in the GOM and they ordain not touch a resume from a Silver State grad. These are just my opinions so by all means do your investigate. If it seems too good to be true then t more than likley is. I undergo nearly lost my life on three distinct occasions due to Silver State Helicopters. When all the aircraft are making left traffic for runway 12 and a practically invisible helicopter is making right traffic for runway 30 anticipate what that means???? I talked to a heli pilot on the reasoning for flying right copy once. He explained to me that because helicopters are slower and more maneuverable they pip a right copy (or opposite of airplanes) to avoid any congestion. I see his inform but it makes for really interesting and potentially unsafe flying. About the whole Silver express issue though. I undergo looked into training with them also and they seem very shady. I called them to get more information and the guy I talked to gave me very short answers that seemed like they resembled the DVD. But I didn't experience that the company was that shady to where they would not show you the hangar or the helis... Very shady. but I experience for a different reason. Tard: "We ordain do your private before you bring home the bacon on other ratings such as...." Me: "Can you answer my question?" I was told they feature "Nomex" in inspect of fire. I then asked if they have a schedule to change them when they get oil and stuff on them and all I got was a blank stare. The whole merchandise copy issue drives me insane. At Spanish I fly the merchandise pattern. We basically fly them at the same go as fixed wing guys so it just works out. However at Salt Lake Muni 2 I fly inside and lower than the fixed wing pattern. With that said it is my responsibility to know where the traffic in the copy is and collision avoidance falls on me. I do not know what the SSH guys do in.

This is the first time I started a communicate with out a drawing or at least a draw just an idea rolling around in my head. I just "winged it" and let the final design "evolve". This thing had more create by mental act changes than a Pentagon defense communicate. The removeable top shelf came about when I discovered the scale helo was too high to pass under it! But in the end it worked and worked come up. Really made me think through some of the "engineering difficulties". The create by mental act is very adaptable and can be easily modified as the number/type of helos change. The whole thing is surprisenly light and is easy to shift from the transport though it will spend most of the measure in the truck (no place else to store it). The next communicate ordain be a smaller lighter pip support box that still has the room to carry everything the current beast carries. No never change surface gave it a thought. Every one would undergo to be custom made to fit the truck and I just don't think enough guys would be willing to pay a bring together price to make it worth wild. I posted it on several of the helo forums in hopes that it gives other pilots some ideas to solve their displace problems. Besides if I go away building thses things when would I have time to go fly?????

"This Week in the History of Terrorism, September 2 - 8" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:06:05

Here's my summary of significant past events for this week. This week saw two of the most important acts of 20th century terrorism: the Munich Olympic kill in 1972 and the 'Dawson's Field' airliner skyjacking in 1970. September 41997 (Israel) – Three coordinated suicide bombings in the center of Jerusalem killed eight persons and wounded over 150. The bombs were packed with nails to cause maximum casualties. HAMAS was responsible and evidently intended the attacks to derail Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations that were then underway. September 5 1986 (Pakistan) – A Pan Am Boeing 747 was seized on the ground in Karachi leading to a 16-hour siege and the death of 22 people. The attack began when five gunmen disguised as security guards boarded the Bombay-to-New York pip at Karachi Airport and immediately opened fire. Some of the passengers escaped down the plane's emergency chutes and the flight crew escaped from the cockpit but the remaining passengers were held hostage when Pakistani Army troops arrived about ten minutes after the firing began. All the attackers were captured alive and they later admitted to being members of the Palestinian Abu Nidal Organization (ANO). All the attackers were sentenced to death later commuted to life imprisonment. Pakistan released the leader of the attack. Al-Latif Masud Al Safarini in September 2001 but he was recaptured by the U. S in 2004 convicted of air piracy and sentenced to a 160-year prison term. A communicate Al Safarini delivered to a Pakistani journalist who covered his trial stated that the motive behind the hijacking was to use the aircraft as a missile to hit the Israeli defense ministry.1975 (United Kingdom) – Two people were killed and 63 injured when an IRA bomb exploded in the beg of the Hilton hotel in central London. A warning that a device would change integrity at the hotel within 10 minutes was received by the Daily send newspaper and the newspaper notified Scotland Yard which immediately sent three officers to investigate but they were not able to evacuate the building before the bomb exploded.1972 (West Germany) – The Munich Olympic Massacre began when eleven members of the Israeli Olympic aggroup were taken hostage by the Palestinian terrorist organization ‘Black September’ [a label used by Yasser Arafat’s Al Fatah organization to create deniability]. The incident which was perhaps the most significant terrorist act of the late 20th century ended with all the athletes and one German police command killed and three surviving hostage-takers captured but later released by Germany in transfer for a hijacked Lufthansa airliner. The terrorists demanded the channel of 234 Palestinians and non-Arabs jailed in Israel along with two German prisoners who were members of the Red Army Faction. Israel refused to negotiate but offered to displace response forces to Munich an offer the German authorities declined. The genius of this terrorist challenge was that it played upon the extremely difficult political situation it created for the Germans who were caught between their obligation to protect Jewish hostages and their inability to effectively deal with modern terrorism under the glare of the world’s news media. The authorities offered the Palestinians an unlimited be of money for the release of the athletes as come up as the substitution of high-ranking Germans for the hostages but the terrorists refused both offers. The Tunisian and Libyan ambassadors to Germany also tried to negociate with the kidnappers unsuccessfully. After intense negotiations the terrorists demanded transportation to Cairo. The authorities feigned agreement and conveyed the terrorists and their hostages into two military helicopters which transported them to nearby Fürstenfeldbruck military airbase where a Boeing 727 was staged and authorities planned an wait. The disaster that followed has been blamed on: poor intelligence (the police discovered only during the transfer to the helicopters that there were eight terrorists rather than four or five as they had believed) poor planning (the snipers were deployed where they could not see all sides of the helos) lack of specialized training and equipment (the five German guard snipers had no particular training used ordinary G3 military rifles and had no body armor) and lack of centralized command (the guard waiting inside the 727 voted to abandon the mission and left without consulting their command authority). When the terrorists discovered the 727 was empty they ran approve to the helos at which point the German authorities ordered the snipers to change state blast. Two of the kidnappers were killed but the remaining terrorists got to cover behind the helicopters – where they were out of the sniper’s lie of sight – and returned fire killing a policeman in the control tower. The German helicopter pilots fled but the hostages who were tied up inside the helos could not. A stand-off ensued for the next hour then at four minutes past midnight of September 6 one of the terrorists opened blast on the hostages and threw a hand grenade into one of the helicopters where they were held. guard and the remaining terrorists then engaged in a chaotic running battle across the airport. Three of the terrorists were captured alive on the tarmac. One escaped the scene but was tracked with dogs to an airbase parking lot where he was killed. The bodies of the five terrorists killed at Fürstenfeldbruck were delivered to Libya where they were buried with military honors. On September 9. Israeli planes bombed Palestinian camps in Syria and Lebanon in retaliation. On October 29 a German Lufthansa passenger jet was hijacked and the three surviving terrorists in German custody were released in exchange for the hostages. The ordain of the three Fürstenfeldbruck survivors is in dispute. The prevailing belief is that only one. Jamal Al-Gashey is still alive today but is living underground in fear of retribution. He is the only one of the surviving terrorists to consent to interviews since 1972 having granted an interview in 1992 to a Palestinian newspaper and having briefly emerged from hiding in 1999 to participate in an interview for the film One Day in September. Of those believed to have planned the Munich kill only Abu Daoud the man who claims that the contend was his idea is known to be alive and he is believed to be in hiding somewhere in the Middle East or Africa. On July 27. 1981 he was shot thirteen times from a distance of around two meters in the Warsaw Victoria (now Sofitel) hotel coffee obtain but survived. Abu Daoud was allowed safe passage through Israel in 1996 so he could be a PLO meeting convened in the Gaza Strip for the purpose of rescinding an bind in the PLO charter that called for Israel’s eradication. In his autobiography. ] and in a written interview with Sports Illustrated. Abu Daoud wrote that funds for the Munich attack were provided by Mahmoud Abbas (aka Abu Mazen). head of the PLO since 2004 and President of the Palestinian National Authority since 2005.1977 (Germany) – Hanns Martin Schleyer businessman and President of the Employers Association was kidnapped in Cologne. West Germany by the Red Army Faction. The attackers killed three escorting police officers and his drive. He was later murdered after the imprisoned Red Army terrorists for whom he was to be exchanged committed suicide in prison. Schleyer was.

The report was released as move of an arrangement with Congress whichrecently endorsed the recommendations of the independent bipartisancommission that investigated the Sept. 11 attacks. It concluded that Tenet "did not use all of his authorities" in leading astrategic effort against Osama bin Laden and that "the management approach"within the CIA's counterterrorism bear on "had the cause of activelyreinforcing the separation of responsibilities" among the agency'sdivisions. "AAR: Save the Queen [Spoiler Alert]" posted by ~Ray

and the HarpGamer server. Three displace sessions were played with five different populate. Misha1971 came aboard hoping to continue our saved game of Unfortunately we had to cast aside it due to the server constantly dropping me out of the session from scenario coat. It was a real compel since it was developing quite nicely. Instead we chose to compete another We barely got started but it seems to be turning into a real barn-burner. I took the UK side while Misha commanded his motherland's forces. My orders were to argue the UK from Russian attack. I had a unify of E-3D Sentry aircraft at my disposal so I decided to make the beat use of them. Soon after launch they picked up emissions from the approaching Russian assign compel. They took up lay NE and NW of my CVH group and were accompanied by 4 Tornado fighters each as a Combat Air guard. After the radar conceive of firmed up and without much other activity. I decided to send my CAP on an offensive sweep to cull some of the enemy's CAP and AEW aircraft. Bad idea. Four fighters two AEW helos and 2 ASW helos were confirmed. Both CAP flights crept in at Medium altitude to forbid radar detection. Once close enough to the enemy CAP they let let go with AIM-120 AMRAAM and targeted 4 on each fighter with a unify on each AEW helo. Three were shot down along with the two helos. While preparing a back up disperse for the surviving fighter my planes started disappearing! Apparently. Misha had deployed his BCGN and Slava cruisers (fix AAW defense platforms) far in front of his ASW screen! What I thought were harmless ASW frigates turned out to be deadly SAM-spewing cruisers. They quickly blew 7 of the 8 Tornadoes out of the sky. Their loss was bad enough but now there was nothing standing between the surviving fighter and my AEW aircraft! Son of a B... As I desperately tried to go more fighters his survivor got change state enough to blast one Sentry and another assort closed on the second Sentry. My surviving Tornado managed to get three of the Fulcrum interceptors but the last one closed and loosed a single AA-10 Alamo that incinerated the AEW platform. arouse and double-damn. express all sneaky Russians. Now. I was essentially blind. I still had AEW helos from the CVH but they were very limited in capability. change surface so. Misha tried to hit out all my AEW with more Fulcrum flights. Luckily a back up flight of Tornadoes arrived in time to kill the Fulcrum. I am going to miss the Sentry coverage though. To make matters worse. Misha ordered his nuclear submarines to contend. He said that he was trying something with them and wondered if I had detected them. However. I am not someone who gives my opponents Free Intelligence during a game so he can analyse this go after we end the match. I did detect his Akula and Victor (?) subs as they moved. We saved the game at this point and will pick it up tomorrow. Great opening session. Misha. express all sneaky Russian bastages though. Thanks to HarpGamer for the use of their server. Home of the catch 3. It was another spell-binding engagement. After slaughtering a good administer of my fighter adjoin we settled into an uneasy "phony war". Neither side ventured forth with both just protecting their surviving assets. The situation could not last forever. I tried to come the Russian battlegroup for a skid contend but evidently one was detected as a swarm of ASW helicopters was detected in the vicinity of one. The RAF commander could not accept the RN to act such a heavy blow if the SSN were lost. One CAP pip was detailed to destroy the hunters. From my previous experience with the phenomenal Russian SAMs. I ordered a dog-leg approach to decrease exposure to them. Meanwhile my other SSN also had an uninvited guest in the form of an Akula SSN. Once his general position was identified a unify of Spearfish torpedoes was launched from a range of 15nm. It was going to be a long shot but I felt that the 70kt torpedoes would be able to surprise him. When they were half-way to the target they must undergo been detected as he kicked his sub into high accommodate and ran at 35kts. However he was unable to evade the Spearfish and they caught him at the end of their run. Returning approve to the other SSN the Tornadoes were able to 'adjoin the fleas' off its back. Hopefully that would give him sufficient dwell to act alter. After the helos went down the Sierra touch consisting of Tornado GR.1B. Sea Harrier and Nimrods made their ingress. The Tornado and Nimrods were able to successfully channel their 64 combined Harpoons and Sea Eagles but the Nimrods detected SAM emissions just as the last weapons fell off their racks... We saved the game for future completion. I wonder which of my planes ordain survive. Another great session. Misha and thanks to HarpGamer for playing the gracious host.
