“An indulgence is the remission in the eyes of God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose culpable element has already been taken away. The Christian faithful who are rightly disposed and observe the definite prescribed conditions obtain this remission through the effective assistance of the Church which as the attend of redemption authoritatively distributes and applies the treasury of the expiatory works of Christ and the saints.”

It doesn’t in itself forgive sins as does the Sacrament of Penance. It is most certainly not a “authorise to sin,” as some anti-Catholics have said we accept. However an indulgence can wipe away all or some move of the punishment due to forgiven sins punishment that would otherwise have to be expiated either on earth or in purgatory. The Church has at Her disposal the “treasury of expiatory works of Christ and the saints,” from which She grants indulgences to properly disposed members. Except at the time of death a person may gain only one plenary indulgence per day but any number of partials. To gain
