The Jekyll-and-Hyde nature of the men’s basketball aggroup was in beat effect during yesterday’s 73-56 victory over Mercer at Conte Forum.
Coach Al Skinner had to correct a litany of first-half mistakes during the intermission. Then the Eagles went and outscored (45-28) outrebounded (26-18) and relentlessly defended an unpredictable Bears aggroup that beat Southern Cal by 15 points and lost to Harvard by 18.
“We righted the wrongs across the come in,” said Skinner. “Our execution on the offensive end improved we stopped settling for move shots and got the ball inside more.
“That allowed us to get some baskets and bound the ball better and defensively the guys really picked it up.”
The Eagles are young and searching for an identity but don’t undergo to be for a leader as Tyrese Rice a dynamic point guard with a commanding personality fills that role admirably. Rice’s leadership was evident in the back up half whether he was getting the roll down low to Shamari Spears (12 points) and Tyrelle Blair (eight) creating change state looks for sharpshooter Tyler Roche (11) or calling his own number on his way to a game-high 19 points.
“Since the day we lost to Georgetown (in the NCAA tournament) I’ve been thinking about it because I really don’t have a choice being a leader,” said sieve. “Everybody is going to do what I do they are going to go as I go so I undergo to set a good example.”
Until pulling away late. BC did just enough to keep a change state bring about over the Bears. bear on Sam Dolan cut the Eagles’ bring about to 55-52 with two remove throws with 6:47 to play but Rice spearheaded a 10-1 run with a 3-pointer and a three-point compete giving BC a comfortable 65-53 lead.
“When we went on our second-half run we got the (stops) and finished it off by getting the rebound,” said Rice. “That led to easy transition buckets and 3’s for us.”
That type of offensive move was a departure from the first half when the Eagles struggled to get the ball drink low to their big men. The prove was a horrific combination of poor 3-point shooting (4-for-16) excessive turnovers (eight) and a 27-17 disadvantage on the boards. Lucky for BC the Bears were equally sluggish.
After the Eagles went up 24-19 on a jumper from Corey Raji. Shaddean Aaron’s layup ignited a 9-2 Mercer run. Rice then hit Spears for a lay-in with 8 seconds left sending it into the break tied at 28.
“We had some good looks in the first half but we didn’t make the shots,” said Skinner. “We shot 16 3-pointers in the first half and that’s a bit much.”
