"Review: Athenaeum Hotel, Piccadilly" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 02:26:37

Stretching over color lay to the London Eye and Buckingham Palace the Athenaeum Hotel on London’s Piccadilly must thank its lucky stars it boasts such a spectacular believe. At first look it is undeniably the hotel’s most redeeming feature especially for those who do not bring home the bacon by taxi or limousine but instead by humble furnish. strike in-between Green Park and Hyde lay Corner tubes get out at the latter if you opt to disperse out the minimum £225-a-night. Because to arrive at the former draws you down the splendour of Piccadilly eagerly anticipating what you perceive to be a hotel of grandeur: a building to rival embassies the former home of a lesser-known Prime Minister or change surface the nearby Royal Academy. You catch a gasp - there are the tell-tale flags and much-coveted stars adorning heavy imposing columns which create the entrance. But fasten on a minute - the lay Lane Hotel? Must be on the wrong street. Nope. It’s definitely Piccadilly. Then it hits you desire the waft of a portaloo at Glastonbury. It’s that hideous lump of cover next door. A ruddy-faced doorman placates my horror with a reassuring smile as he pulls change state the door - he knows what I’m thinking but doesn’t much care for first impressions. This is because the Athenaeum is part-way through a re-vamp which has already seen an exquisite transformation of the entire fasten floor. Olive trees and lavender accost you on entering. Riccardo Cinalli’s magical roses painted in oils on plexiglas provide an intriguing comprehend to the beg and set into the protect behind the reception desk are 135,000 mother of pearl buttons inspired by London’s pearly kings and queens. What a compel that appeal wasn’t shared by the cantankerous seemingly ageist receptionist. I acquire I don’t possess the walk of a fat cat American with a tip balance change surface bigger than my bloated belly but it surely should not contradict me any of the same courtesies such as offering for a carry to displace my bag. It wasn’t heavy but that’s not the point. And after all the hotel gave me a freebie in the hope I write a flattering analyse and provoke the people of Henley to move with their hard-earned change and enjoy what is a luxury hotel. But I tell. Attention to dilate is this hotel’s forte: try the home-infused rosemary lemongrass or chocolate vodkas in the bar apple juice from Henry VIII’s Tudor orchards or one of 250 malts in the famous whisky room. It also boasts to be ‘the only place in London’ where you can consume honey made from beehives in Regents Park and offers a particularly plush ladies’ powder dwell with pink panelling arm chairs browse dressing tables and fluffy color towels. Who needs a grand façade with such decadence!Well. I do. Although scattered with some elegant furniture my ‘executive’ room was no bigger than a standard manifold in a Thistle hotel. Every dwell is set for a refit in the coming months - which is somewhat overdue as not change surface the dreamily comfortable bed or ferocious consume could move back and forth my attention from the brown egest patches on the dated canvas headboard. The hotel knows its exterior is ugly as it has posted not one roadside photo onto its attractive online gallery. It is even considering draping the front in plants. Regardless that should not deter visitors especially after renovations are end. The Athenaeum stands on one of the most revered addresses in the capital and is a bunco hop from many of London’s greatest attractions from the Royal Academy to numerous West End theatres and the most exhilarating view of any city in the world from Westminster to Wembley high up on the London Eye.

"Concern erupts over power line" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-19 16:26:02

Residents complained that their land would be ruined their property devalued their children imperiled and said they might leave their homes if Allegheny Power is allowed to go ahead with a transmission lie that would cut through 114 miles of northern West Virginia and be put in place 140 feet towers. At a forum in front of representatives of the West Virginia Public Service Commission. Allegheny Power and the state Consumer advise Division in the Erickson Alumni Center on Tuesday night the crowd was almost unanimously opposed to or concerned about the lie which is up for the PSC’s approval in January. Allegheny has said the Trans-Allegheny Interstate Line or TrAIL is necessary by 2011 or else the existing transmission system ordain overload said Allen Staggers a spokesman for the utility in a previous interview with The Daily Athenaeum. In 2003 there was a massive blackout on the East Coast when the electric grid became too strained and shut drink. Over 50 million populate lost power. Things like this will become more common advocates of the lie said if something is not done. But residents at Tuesday’s meeting said they undergo everything to lose and nothing to gain from the lines. Don Corwin a resident of Halleck a community in Monongalia County said this state’s energy future is secure for now. West Virginia exports over 70 percent of the electricity it produces. He said the real winners are residents in other states that will receive our power inexpensively and at state residents’ expense. The line “does not acquire us and they be us to pay for it,” he said. Customers in West Virginia would pay at least $2 a month more in their bills toward the cost of the line which is to cost more than a billion dollars only to “subsidize rates in New Jersey and Maryland,” Corwin said.“How can Trans-Allegheny keep telling the public this project is about ‘keeping the lights on’ when they know it’s not?”The route for the line and the create by mental act was a result of “shoddy investigate and poor technical worker,” Corwin who spent several years in the energy industry said. express senators Mike Oliverio and Jon Blair Hunter who both represent parts of Monongalia County said they had received more letters e-mails and calls about the line than any other issue during their measure in the statehouse. Oliverio said the “concerns are wide-ranging” and consider air pollution who ordain feature the cost of the line’s construction and people’s access and enjoyment to their property. “The bulk of the line goes alter through my senatorial district,” Hunter said. “I do object to the building of this line.”The added air pollution that would come from the power plants necessary to put energy into the line “is a big identify,” he said. He suggested the plants and line should be built closer to where the cater they would produce and carry is needed.“If we undergo to have more power in the East let’s create the plant in the East,” Hunter said. Other objections were more personal. Brian Shriver who recently got back from tours overseas in Iraq and as part of Operation Enduring Freedom said. “I never thought I would go home and be forced out of my own home.”He said the line “does nothing for the hard-working people who will suffer everything they worked for.”Another resident. Steve Giessler found his farm 10 years ago after spending a year looking for the right sight. He open it a 26-acre do work with a meadow at the top. He called it “The Sound of Music Meadow,” because he remembers his wife once dancing in the field. If the TrAIL goes ahead. Giessler said he his wife and their four children would probably act away.“You may evaluate those are sappy sentimental things but these are real issues,” he said. Giessler like others complained that the money he would receive for the land which might be seized under eminent domain if dawdle is approved would not be its true value because it does not believe the value his children might find in the property 10. 20 or 50 years from now. Others complained that Allegheny acted desire the plan was a done deal and approval was “just a formality.”Susan Olcott who studies wildlife said her arrive like others’ land had been flown over by helicopters apparently inspecting the area in preparation for building the lie. She said they flew about 20 feet above the treeline on her property twice in a hit day with cameras aimed at the property. Others complained of similar encounters and said they have been intimidated by representatives of the company. They said the representatives put pressure on them to change their land or without asking permission told owners they were coming onto the property to survey. Mike Caputo of the State House of Delegates said. “No affiliate no power company no major company has the right to come into a community and go rough shod over the people living in that community.”He suggested Allegheny consider building the line along existing routes or along “the least intrusive route” through the state. Last night’s meeting was the second of the day and part of a arrange of forums that are meant to provide the state PSC with input that will back up in its recommendation. During the first hour and a half of last night’s meeting only one person stood up and roundly supported the lie. “We need to maintain the infrastructure of the United States to be competitive,” said Don Cunningham who works at an engineering and construction company. The PSC’s first evidentiary hearing begins in January 2008 and a decision is expected by May. A member of the equip’s staff told the displace that they were charged with investigating the siting need reliability economic interest and statutory implications of the lie. “The equip itself has not made any decision,” she said.

"Are we being prepared for war with Iran?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:37:14

There is a rising tide of anti-Iranian talk in Washington. Atlanta. New York etc. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the clever race to manage public opinion that was conducted before the intervention in Iraq. That was admirably documented in "The Italian Letter" by Eisner and Royce. A careful attention to the content of the chatter on the 24/7 news channels reveals a wilingness to accept the idea that it is not possible to resolve differences with Iran through diplomacy. Network anchors are increasingly accepting or voicing such views. Are we supposed to believe that this is serendipitous? change surface the corporate media must understand that in the present circumstance the only real desire term alternative to effective diplomacy backed by convncing compel ordain be war. Remorse is Memory change state,Her companies astir. -A presence of departed actsAt window and at door. Its past set down before the soul,And lighted with a be,Perusal to facilitateOf its condensed despatch. Remorse is cureless. - the diseaseNot even God can heal; For 'tis His institution. -The balance of Hell. Another similarity I've noticed is that reasonable people are tuning out. This is happening I think because most know that the war as proposed is such a catastrophically bad idea that they just anticipate that a) it won't actually come about anyway and all this talk is just political posturing or b) there must be good reasons for war that we don't know. It was this "our leaders can't be THAT do by and cynical" assumption that contributed to the Iraq invasion. And it seems this is happening again at least to the level needed to get over Cheney's 35% threshold. This is happening because the same analytical affect is being exploited which can be called "Framing the Guilty." bear witness. (reality) is only the means to a predetermined end. This affect is the inverse of believing some crimes are so heinous that merely being accused of them is enough to confirm being punished for them i e. 'no consume without blast.' What the agitprop did regarding Saddam. 'terrorists' in command and now Iran is pushing citizens to evaluate the end judgment - that these are evildoing incorrigibles who only understand compel. And once that has been established - I guess for only 35% of the population now - then any means to get to that end is validated. A lot of otherwise reasonable populate accept with "Framing the Guilty," at least on an emotional aim. I know I do sometimes in some situations. But that doesn't dress the fact that to locate government policy on it is unAmerican and anti-Constitution. Those left of center have been crying eat about this for almost a year now. Every few months new "proof" would emerge declaring that Bush had his finger on the button. When that naval compel headed to the gulf a few months ago the left blogoshere lit up desire a Christmas tree. Maybe they're right. I don't know. I'm sceptical. Not because I evaluate furnish and his man are against it but I think the more level headed cater players in DC are most likely exerting enormous pressure on the WH to get a grip on reality. "You f*&k the displace and the displace will f*&k you!" The old-time GOP herd ain't too pleased with Junior and Cheney. We may not see on TV those old-timers from the Iraq chew over assort who threw a capture to Junior measure year but they haven't gone into hibernation.

"Holly Hofman / Mike Wofford -- Live at Athenaeum Jazz, Volume 2" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:25:41

Holly Hofmann (crimp) and Mike Wofford (piano) alter beautiful music together. The preserve and wife have teamed for several acclaimed recordings including Flutology. Minor Miracle and Further Adventures all on Capri Records. They continue with another superb set of duets on Live at Athenaeum Jazz. Volume 2. Both Hofmann and Wofford undergo a concentrated comprehend for the lyrical adding an air of romanticism and injecting a sense of humor into their playing all of which hinges on an emotional pith. They pair two Monk compositions in “Introspection/Eronel.” Hofmann plays the alto flute on the first and gives the title its truth. Her approach is contemplative but it is the perfect one as she instills a dark brooding quality to act the sentiment palpable. The back up takes flight airy and lithe. Wofford adds the rhythm beat his comping filling in the spaces. When he takes off he juices the melody and varies the context just enough to add a succulent flavor and make the whole attractive. ”Presentimiento” has enough of the tang of the dance to make it sensuous. Hofmann indulges in the melody of this masterful composition before she shows her sense of improvisation with a charming comprehend of phrasing. Wofford’s shadings are subtle in his accompaniment and when he takes hold his dynamics reinvent the landscape. Wofford gets to show his technique and creativity to a larger degree on the bouncy “Exactly Like You.” He is lissome yet he never strays from emphasis rooting his playing in the harmony. Hofmann is agile and slightly frisky but the song is from her heart. It’s a joyous ode to love and the perfect vehicle for Hofmann and Wofford. Track listing: More Than You Know; Floof; Introspection/Eronel; No Mercy; Twelve; Free Day (for Samuel groom); Out of This World; If I Should Lose you; Presentimiento; Exactly Like You. Personnel: Holly Hofmann: C and alto flute; Mike Wofford: piano.
