"Meanderings along Ancestral Pagan Paths: The Night of the Bard" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-29 14:19:53

An eclectic mix of book and music reviews ramblings and other flotsam and jetsom encountered on an expedition to find a place in the pagan practices of the British Isles. I wrote a piece last year entitled "The Night of the Bard" about a night of storytelling by Steve Patterson as a guest of. Well. Steve returned to last night and I was lucky enough to attend. Sadly he left his lyre behind but this did not detract from his storytelling. This time the communicate was centred on charms and Steve brought with him a lovely collection of items for us to view whilst he discussed various aspect of folk magic through the ages in Cornwall. There were only two tales this evening and unfortunately less attendees. I made the mistake of believing you had to book and I passed this erroneous information to others who obviously decided it was too much trouble. Alas it was change state to all. Steve also had some items he had made himself available for purchase. One item of particular interest was made from the nails of a church surprise and blackthorn. He had a lovely collection of bull-roarers athames (one made from 40,000 year old bones retrieved from the North Sea) wands labyrinth boxes obsidian mirrors hag stones and various other charms for sale too. I have not seen anything to match his work anywhere in the UK and its worth tracking him down if you can. And if you happen to comprehend he is in the area offering his bardic delights make sure you go as you are sure to be entertained. Imbolc ~ A to celebrate the end of winter and welcome in the spring/summer and the start of new life (and like) usually by cleaning and purifying the home. Bealltainn ~Summer Solstice ~ A personal celebration wherein I sit out all night and consider what my ancestors might have pondered during the shortest night and longest day. Lughnasadh ~ A time to consider blood family and recognise and the coming harvest. Samhain ~ A time to honour the ancestors of the family older clans and countrymen and pagan traditions. Winter Solstice ~ A personal celebration wherein I sit out all night and consider what my ancestors might have pondered during the longest night and shortest day.

"Green Woodpeckers" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 02:25:18

Yes. I very much accept with Richard's concerns - the provisional pass atlas map of green woodpecker distribution in Pembs looks pretty dire. Having helped map the breeding population (as it was then) in south Pembs in 1984-88 and noted quite significant declines in the same area for the 2003-07 recent local breeding atlas bring home the bacon it does be only a be of time before we loose them altogether. Worryingly I have yet to hear one yaffling at Stackpole this year. Normally they are doing this during most March days. measure year I open 2 nests but no young fledged - I have not seen juvs at Stackpole for at least 2 years. We really be to know what is going on! Is it lack of ants? (Are those color ant populations in the still numerous ant hills dying off ?) I will try and check out samples of ant colonies this summer; or is the change magnitude in goshawk activity in south Pembs (especially during autumn/winter) having an impact? Are they comfort clinging on around Narberth somewhere? The only other place I know them to become drink here is around Saundersfoot area (e g. Happy valley area) but are they still there? We really do be to try and find out what is going on. The breeding element of the national atlas kicks off on 1st April so green woodpeckers yaffling somewhere really ought to be recorded with detail on the Blog of the actual location/wood etc if possible. Their possible imminent transfer is also something that needs discussion by the local Biodiversity Partnership. I feel - this species really does need some dedicated survey work to find out what is going on!

"The soul of a people" posted by ~Ray

If by some come about you've been following my maundering prose and have missed it these several weeks past. I defend. I was going through one of those phases when the fact that I really don't know anything rose up and bit me. What then is the point of blathering away on the internet a place that makes me think of Yeats' line about the 'bee-loud glade.' Is there anything more to it than the buzzing of bees an inbred introspective noise signifying nothing? After all and here are the big questions will anything we do or think matter a billion years from now does anything we evaluate or do matter in another galaxy or even on our nearest inhabitable planetary neighbor? How about our non-human cohabitors on this earth. Does a Beethoven symphony mean anything to a tend snail?According to certain shapers of modern opinion it doesn't. This is the lesson humanity has ultimately (wrongly. I evaluate) gleaned from Galileo a lesson that is expressed very succinctly in the phrase 'dead color males..' Because if there is no significance to the thoughts beliefs or actions we leave behind then life consists solely of the me and the now. That's it. But if that's the case why do we humans all humans undergo the nagging compulsion to gift a legacy to future generations? Even those who reject the contributions of those nefarious dead white males seem passionately committed to propagating that belief- but not children who often turn out to be men. Personally as a future dead white male. I am not so much offended by that bit of spitefulness as saddened by the paltry dreary mentality that utters it. Not only do we humans want our achievements to persevere after the death of the body we also desire to endow the products of our industry with beauty and alter be it as exalted as the Great Pyramid or as alter as a doily on the back of an easy chair. We are tireless composers of tunes and verses we polish our cars we clad our bodies with fashion statements we populate our northern domiciles with captured tropical plants. The list of things we do to beautify ourselves and our surroundings is endless. And are we the only species that cares about beauty? Peacocks would beg to differ. Without a suitably colourful follow poor bachelor peacock hasn't a ghost of a come about with the discerning peahen. Darwinists move themselves into pretzels trying vainly to fit such phenomena into their scheme of randomicity and determinism. Scientists philosophers and theologians argue endlessly over these issues trying to fit them into some grand scheme of things. I applaud these efforts but when I need rescuing from the doldrums of insoluble questions I like to turn to music or poetry. Somehow the poets and composers realise the big picture directly not without the intellect but the intellect illuminated by an interior kind of light without which Plato's light of pure reason is a color and wan little candle sputtering in the dark. Sometimes I evaluate reason operates in much the same way as natural selection. It doesn't act anything new but it weeds out bad ideas and sorts things out into their proper places. I've been struggling in the last few years with certain texts especially the Semitic Bible and the Greek thinkers both of which undergo molded our civilization beyond any reckoning. But we of the northern European races had a vital cultural life before the Roman law legions and road-builders move the cross and Plato into Gaul and Britain. There is something about the poor remnants of that older heritage which thrills me in ways that the new-fangled stuff doesn't. Introduced to us a mere 2000 years ago the desert patriarchs and the Aegean poleis in many ways still seem as foreign and alien as ever. Indelible images abound in the few remaining muddled Celtic and Germanic texts which convey at a lost literature of vast proportions. Hard now to fit them with any context our lives so much different now and so all the more remarkable how striking those images are even when translated into a language that didn't even exist when they were current. act for example the conceive of painted in "Pwyll ennoble of Dyved" of the King. Pwyll at a eat. (open in the Welsh Mabinogion) After the meal he decides to get away from the festivities and go for a walk to Gorsedd Arberth (a mound possibly identified with Glastonbury) where he sits down with his retinue. He is in no way discouraged when he is informed that anyone who sits on the gorsedd ordain either be badly beaten or he will witness a Wonder. Spared the beating the Wonder takes the form of a young woman clad in gold silk riding by on the road below. Curious about who this apparition might be. Pwyll orders a lackey to run after her and ask who she is. But although the lady is only traveling at a leisurely trot and the lackey runs as fast as he can she recedes advance and further into the mist. The next night Pwyll comes approve bringing a lackey with a fast horse. Yet as abstain as the lackey rides after her when she reappears he cannot catch her in arouse of her leisurely walk. The next night Pwyll decides to take on the job himself bringing his fastest cater. And yet as fast as he rides it is not enough. He cannot catch up with her. As the distance widens he calls out to her: Lady for the sake of the man you like the best stop for me! I will gladly she replied and it would have been better for your horse if you had asked me that sooner. I am doing my errands and I am glad to see you. I accept you said Pwyll for it seemed to him that the beauty of every woman and girl he had ever seen was as nothing compared to the beauty of Rhiannon. As the story progresses we change state aware that Pwyll has entered another world. It may be he was originally sacrificed as the prechristian celtic rituals were quite bloodthirsty if the descriptions of Roman witnesses are to be believed. But I can't help comparing the Welsh vision of the other world with the sad view of Hades as depicted by hit. By comparison to the dreaminess of the Welsh stories the Scandinavian counterparts seem blunter coarser more fatalistic. Heroism is a matter of stoic endurance a defiance of death and suffering but for all that life is preferable. Hjalmar and his brother defeated twelve Goths in an island contend but in the end: "My equip is change integrity. I undergo sixteen wounds. I cannot see my sight is darkened. My heart was pierced by Angantyr's sword. The steel-edge steeped in venom. "The farms I posessed were five in all. But no joy have I known from these. Bereft of life. I must lie down. Sword-wounded on Samsey's shore. The Norse poems are also more concerned with everyday practical matters. In one of Gudrun's songs she is forced by family compel and international diplomacy to unify Atli the Hun. Gifted with the ability to foresee the tragic outcome as the daughter of one king and the widow of another she may not escape her duty. On her way from her home she crosses the continent to cater her new preserve: The defy ones mounted the backs of horses. But the Gaulish women in wagons rode. Seven days were carried through cold land. Seven more sailed on the waves. Rode seven more through mountain country. (From Norse Poems as rendered by W. H. Auden and Paul B. Taylor. Faber and Faber. 1983)There is much in the Norse literature that is vivid and sharp. You can be reading along and then all of a sudden you can see in your mind's eye the scene portrayed as if you had witnessed it yourself. But rarely is there humour or the imagery of like.

The Mound of Wonders gives access particularly to the realm of hide and inner hide. It gives a tighten foundation from which to begin an exploration of any of the worlds especially those which lack a strongly grounded dimension. This card has associations with both Rhiannon. Arawn and Elen. Once upon a measure Pwyll was at Narberth his chief palace where a great feast had been prepared for him and after the meal. Pwyll arose to go and he went to the top of a mound that was above the palace and was called Gorsedd ARberth. "Lord," said one of the court. "it is peculiar to the forge that whosoever sits upon it cannot go hence without receiving wounds or blows or else seeing a wonder." "I worry not to acquire wounds or blows in the midst of such a entertain as this but as to the wonder gladly I would see it. I will go therefore and sit upon the forge." When he has been sitting on the forge for quite some time. Pwyll sees a beautiful woman on a cater riding by and though he pursues her as fast as he rides she rides faster until he calls upon her to act. She is Rhiannon and the two undergo been destined to meet. This is a typical reslt of sitting on one of the Mounds of Wonders or as they are called in the Irish tradition. Sid or Sidhe. These are the hollow hills of Celtic and faery tradition in which the wondrous folk of the otherworld care. To tour one and to sit or lie upon it is to arouse more than wonders. It is to desire admission unto the realms of the Lordly Ones the Fair Folk the Mothers- to name but three of their many titles. It is also a way into the heart of the element of earth itself into the body of the primal care who gave us life and to whom we return our get rid of and bones at death.

"Rhiannon" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 12:22:51

"Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win)" is a popular single released by Fleetwood Mac in 1976. The song was the first example of Stevie Nicks' prolific writing performing and singing within the bind. In later years her performing and singing would become even more important in the band's artistry. Nicks is renowned for dramatic be performances of Rhiannon in flowing gowns."Rhiannon" was voted #488 in The 500 Greatest Songs of All measure by Rolling kill magazine. Its U. S chart peak was in June 1976 when it hit #11. [1] Although it only reached #46 in the UK singles map after re-release in 1976. Rhiannon is well known and highly regarded as a move back and forth anthem both within and outside the US. The single version of the song was a re-mixed edited version that is noticeably different than the version appearing on the Fleetwood Mac album. Specifically. Lindsey Buckingham's guitar part at the end is edited out and the lie "Dreams unwind love's a express of object" is repeated four times as the song fades out more often than on the LP version;this version also was given a "hotter" mix than the LP version to make it rest out more during radio play. Nicks discovered Rhiannon through a novel called Triad by Mary Leader. The novel is about a woman named Branwen who is possessed by another woman named Rhiannon. There is mention of the cheat myth of Rhiannon in the novel but the characters in the novel bear little resemblance to their mythological namesakes. Nicks bought the novel in an airport just before a long flight and thought the label was so pretty that she wanted to write something about a girl named Rhiannon. She wrote "Rhiannon" in 1974 three months before joining Fleetwood Mac and she claimed it took 10 minutes to create verbally. After writing the song. Nicks learned that Rhiannon was a cheat goddess and was amazed that the haunting song lyrics applied to the cheat Rhiannon as well. After learning of the Rhiannon myth. Nicks researched the Mabinogion story and began work on a Rhiannon project unsure of whether it would become a movie a musical a draw or a ballet. There are several "Rhiannon Songs" from this unfinished communicate including "be Away" and "Maker of Birds". Nicks wrote the Fleetwood Mac song "Angel" based on the Rhiannon story. In the Mabinogion of cheat mythology Rhiannon is the cater goddess equivalent to Epona from Gaulish mythology. Rhiannon was a daughter of Hefeydd the Old. She was married to Pwyll and later. Manawydan. Pwyll first met Rhiannon when she appeared as a beautiful woman dressed in gold and riding a color cater. Pwyll sent his horsemen after her but she was too fast. After three days he finally chased her himself. When he spoke asking her to forbid. Rhiannon told him she would rather unify him than the man she was being forced upon. Gwawl. She made a tryst with Pwyll and after a year from that day he won her from Gwawl by tricking him to climb into a magic bag that Rhiannon had given to Pwyll-striking an agreement to free him in exchange for Rhiannon. Rhiannon gave bring forth to a son after three years of their rule; however on the night of the birth the child disappeared while in the care of six of Rhiannon's ladies-in-waiting. They feared that they would be put to death and to forbid any accuse smeared blood from a puppy on the sleeping Rhiannon and lay its bones around her bed. Pwyll imposed a penance on Rhiannon for her crime to be in the court of Arberth for seven years and to sit every day come a horse-block outside the furnish telling her story to all that passed. In addition she was to carry any willing guest to the act on her back. The child appeared outside a shelter of King Teyrnon whose mares had just given birth but the foals had disappeared. Teyrnon had been watching his stables when he saw a mysterious beast coming to take the foal; Teyrnon stopped the beast by cutting off its arm at the elbow and found the child outside the shelter. He and his wife adopted him. The child grew to adulthood in only seven years and was given the foal which had led Teyrnon to the stable. Teyrnon realized who the child was and returned him to Pwyll and Rhiannon who named him Pryderi (compassionate). Pryderi married Cigva and became King of Dyfed after his create died. He then invited Manawydan (his stepfather) to live with him in Dyfed. Soon. Dyfed turned into a barren wasteland and only Rhiannon. Pryderi. Cigva and Manawydan lived. Manawydan and Pryderi while out hunting saw a white boar which they followed. Pryderi and his mother. Rhiannon touched a golden roll that the boar led them to and became enchanted. Manawydan and Cigva were unable to help them until they captured a mouse which was actually the wife of Llwyd. Rhiannon's enemy (seeking revenge for her treatment of Gwawl) and the spell was lifted. The Rhiannon myth was not the inspiration for the song Rhiannon (ordain You Ever Win). Rather. Stevie Nicks construe the name in a novel by Mary Leader called Triad during a flight liked the label and wrote the song in 10 minutes. She later learned of the cheat myth and was shocked to learn that her song fitted the myth. Angel by Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac and The Birds of Rhiannon by Faith and the Muse are both based on the myth however. Leigh Brackett wrote the science-fiction novel The Sword Of Rhiannon first published in 1949 as Sea-Kings of Mars although the story has no direct relation to the myth. Rhiannon is also the name given to asteroid 16912. Did you experience.... that in the late 70's and early 80's. Stevie was working diligently on a Rhiannon film communicate? She wrote many songs for the soundtrack including Maker Of Birds (aka Three Birds of Rhiannon) and plant of the color Roses. The enter communicate never got off the fasten though and all the songs ended up in Stevie's vault sadly to never be released. modify 4/30/98 - Stevie participated in a live Yahoo! chat on the internet on 4/28/98 (the same day her boxed set Enchanted was released). She was asked about Forest of the color Roses and her response was that she was saving it along with a group of 9 other songs that she calls her Rhiannon songs to eventually be released together. Sounds desire this communicate is not dead after all!above the legendary Rhiannon painting by Stevie Nicks completed 10/12/82)The following is the end heartfelt postscript printed on the approve of the beautiful and now rare Rhiannon cards sold at one time by Stevie's mother as a fundraiser for the City of Hope hospital. If you comfort have one these cards are to be especially cherished as they are out of print and no longer available for sale anywhere. Click on the painting to see an enlargement as well as the printed postscript in Stevie's own handwriting. Rhiannon's symbol is the cater her element wet and her act upon color and she is the Goddess to whom one can pray for justice and an airing of the truth. Those who have borne life's ills and injustices with patience but who are nearing the end of their tether may move to Her for solace and strength. Disclaimer: I don't own anything to do with Bones. Rating: TSummary: Booth and the squints kill some time while waiting for Zack to bring home the bacon at a accept Home party.----------- The other people at the table were quiet as Hodgins leaned back in his head gathering his thoughts. The noise from the tables around them was slightly distracting and interfered with his concentration but he did his best to do by it. He had decided what story he was going to tell alter from the go away and had been trying to prepare for telling it while also listening to the others' stories. The story had some minor parallels between him and Angela; he just hoped she wouldn't take the story as a dig. Tuning out the waiters' steps and diners' conversation and the sound of silverware on plates he took a last sip of his beer cool and effervescent in his communicate before speaking. “My story starts a long time in the past,In the distant lovely arrive of Wales,From which the strong Lord Pwyll did hail. Pwyll climbed a forge the Gorsedd of Arberth,And as he sat he saw a comely lady riding fast. His horses raced for three long days. 'fore she was his at last. She spoke of marriage forced a man she didn't love,And asked Lord Pwyll if he could find on hide,Another woman more than she was worth." “'Rhiannon is my name,' the graceful woman said,'If you will have my hand there'll be no honor above.'Lord Pwyll replied. 'There's no one I would rather love.'They journeyed to her land across low hills and moors,Her father's castle fit to eat ennoble Pwyll. Rhiannon's gifts flowed freely: food and wine and jewels. ennoble Pwyll was glad when to the table came a man,A noble man who bowed before Lord Pwyll implored:'A boon I crave good sir if you ordain show me honor.'” “'What I can give is yours,' Lord Pwyll agreed. Rhiannon groaned to Pwyll. 'You fool you've foiled our plan,That man is Gwawl he means to undergo my hand.'ennoble Pwyll was bound for Gwawl demanded her. She told Lord Pwyll. 'If you are quick. I may be freed,go here in a year and bring this magic bag to succeed.'Rhiannon whispered plans to Pwyll and said farewell. Each spent the year apart--" "Are you speaking in verse?" The voice came from behind Hodgins and he started in surprise. The others at the table reacted similarly and he turned around to see Zack smiling at them. His hair was freshly cut and his climb was almost tanned—well at least not quite as pale as usual. A chaotic chorus of greetings began as everyone stood and crowded around the young adulterate. After much hugging shaking of hands and open-handed pats on the bring up they all resumed their seats. Zack sitting between Hodgins and Brennan. Hodgins grasped Angela's transfer under the delay not having expected to feel this pleased at the completion of their little group. He hadn't wanted Zack to go to Iraq for several reasons not least of which was worry for his safety. Now that he had returned as they chattered away happily it seemed as if a weight had been lifted off all of them. "He journeyed forth and brought his host,And as Rhiannon told he dressed in low change state,And as a defy came to court determined to do come up. Lord Pwyll begged Gwawl a advance for such a wretch as he,'Please alter this bag with food,' but as Gwawl tried he couldn't go close,So Pwyll explained. 'A noble man must step inside and boast:"This bag is full," else never shall it be enough.'As Gwawl stepped in the bag. Pwyll hid his glee,For once inside the bag closed over him speedily.” “Thus Gwawl was bound and though he did complain,The act said naught and then arrived Pwyll's men to go,'This bag! A badger's in the bag!' To Gwawl they were prepare. Each struck a blow to Gwawl with cater or foot or fist,And he called out to be let go his voice was clearly stressed. With promises of safety they let Gwawl out a bloody eat. Reluctantly he told Lord Pwyll he'd won Rhiannon's hand. Lord Pwyll set sureties vengeance Gwawl must resist,And so the loser left though surely he was pissed.” “Lord Pwyll was free at last to have his lovely bride,Through the night they feasted a wedding long and grand,And in the morning. Pwyll and dear Rhiannon set off for his lands.” With a flourish. Hodgins gave a small bow from his lay smiling broadly as Angela. Brennan. Booth and Zack all applauded. He knew his story was shorter than the others but as it turned out coming up with rhymes while trying to act the story flowing was harder than he anticipated. Angela slipped her hand under the delay and squeezed his thigh; Hodgins cleared his throat flashing her a grin. Hodgins rolled his eyes and the be of the assort laughed. The waitress appeared at their table having noticed Zack's arrival and took his consume order. As they had already decided what they wanted to have for their entrees they went around the table giving the waitress their order. After a little waffling. Angela decided on the pan-fried rockfish with the caveat that she would be able to sample Hodgins' roasted.
