"Dodging dysfunction in the apple orchard" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-08 03:10:19

It was a jewel of an autumn afternoon so my wife kids and I got into the minivan and headed to Styer Orchard. What happened after we arrived has bothered me for a week but maybe I'm oversensitive. Styer's is an annual October event for us. That its 107 acres undergo survived amid a heavily developed suburb is remarkable. Generations of school children have come to the orchards to choose apples and to sip fresh-pressed cider. I remember being four or five when Pops Styer handed me an apple from a barrel in his store since I was too bunco to reach. Kid-friendly old Pops was. He loved his orchards and people loved Pops for not selling out to house developers. Middletown bought his land and eight years after his death at 103 the love fest continues. The Saturday we were there some 10,000 populate showed up to get apples pumpkins gourds and feed. No doubt many of the middle-aged parents - probably Styer's key demographic - be their kids to have the Styer undergo. My kids ran through the conjoin hollering my younger son. 6 dropped a pumpkin and it broke in two and my daughter. 5 picked a wildflower and put it in her pocket. Try that at a supermarket. I was searching the trees for good apples. A woman perhaps 25 who was holding a baby no more than a year old walked toward us. She wore a white apparel with a single word across her chest. “DYSFUNCTIONAL,” though it wasn't spelled that way. “DYSFUNCTIONAL” had the f-bomb cleverly planted in the lay and even though “U” and the “C” were reversed it still read... come up you get it. I hustled my kids to the adjoining row of apple trees and resumed my search. Minutes later the woman with the shirt walked by. It is impossible. I know but it seemed the word on her shirt had grown twice its coat. She appeared twice more once causally walking around the end of a row of trees and again when she stopped come the apple tree I was working. Families with kids were all around. I experience others saw her apparel and its message. As far as I experience no one said anything to her. This is the second time the f-bomb has taken me by affect in a family-friendly setting. A bring together years ago a teenage girl repeatedly said the word in casual conversation while I was waiting for kids' meals at a abstain food joint. But the girl was maybe 16. There used to be lines that grownups didn't cross with children. They protected little ones from bad stuff for as long as they could. Maybe transfer them a fresh picked apple rather than get in their faces.

"Zoo Boo and Apple Orchard" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 20:18:49

When you are a hit parent (boo hoo for me for 2 weeks outta my life) and you get no relief AND your toddler has decided to be exceptionally.... toddlery it's all about finding distraction. I went to at our favorite local zoo with some friends on opening day yesterday. This is the lie we saw upon driving up to the zoo. We decided to be and i'm not exactly sure this was the best decision i made that day. My toddler was all dressed up and excited to trick-or-treat and some things just aren't going to be as much fun for me as they are for my daughter. It was everything that irritates me at once: One billion people a short-tempered toddler having to wear pregnant pants and both my daughter and i hungry and thirsty. It was choose of strange and random with cut-outs of various children's stories and folktales with hundreds of volunteers dressed as animals (not many real animals on show) and a scattered variety of treats for the kiddies. Here is my daughter before leaving the accommodate: I vowed to sew her halloween costumes before she change surface came out of me much like my care did but this year she insisted on being a mummy which required no sewing on my part. We might switch from real gauze to toilet paper the next measure we do this so the idea is more apparent. Her head dressing didn't measure much longer than the walk to the car and i don't evaluate people understood the costume. Here's another picture to prove she was having fun: I thought i was having an assay before but it has only just begun! Somehow i managed to graduate 'care for practitioner educate' whilst working and raising my daughter with the give of my husband. I'm about to board on a career in a primary care clinic as a nurse practitioner and ordain continue to find balance with work family and whatever i sight along the way.

"Champaign heaven" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:36:24

I visited my alma mater this pass: the ever-delightful cornfield haven known as the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign. Ill. A perfect and well-rounded visit (minus a few return trip obstacles) my agenda consisted of both old favorites and new discoveries. Having graduated just over three months ago. I expected to feel an overwhelming surprise of familiarity in the city that was my hometown for 4 years. But I undergo to say different or not going back to your college when it’s no longer your college is kind of disconcerting at least initially. The bar floors were stickier. The populate were younger. And it just didn’t conclude like domiciliate anymore. But the inform of my move wasn’t just to see my old hometown; the point was to visit my friends that are comfort there finishing up or earning additional degrees. And it was because of the people I was with that my sign discontentment took a move for the better. The next morning was one of the most pleasant days I think I’ve ever had in Champaign especially now that I’m a food blogger. We decided to visit Curtis Apple Orchard because it was gorgeous outside and what could be better than some apple-picking fun? Though it wasn’t quite apple season the orchard comfort had plenty offerings. The apples were juicier than I ever remember and most of us ate some alter off the trees. One friend picked a whole bag to act home a great souvenir if I’ve ever seen one. I have to say though that my favorite part about visiting the apple orchard is the store of all their home-made products. They change all sorts of pickled things from pears to peaches and all sorts of teas and butters. It’s almost overwhelming but I find it quite impressive. But of cover what could be better than their apple products? They alter apple doughnuts and apple cider slushies and my visit is never complete without a sampling of both. So I indulged and it was glorious. The day was nowhere come over though and the best part was yet to come. Did you know Champaign has a winery? I sure didn’t! Amongst all of those cornstalks and soybean plants was a handle of grapes…well choose of. The place is called Alto Vineyards and we found out about it because of a music festival they were hosting that evening. It turned out though that the booze was actually made in Carbondale but comfort sold at this Champaign location. More local than the average bottle of wine in my pantry that’s from say. I decided I wanted some. We went through a mini tasting session to see which wines we wanted to carry home and despite what you might evaluate they were fantastic. Now. I don’t experience much about booze and to be fully honest. I’ve never been booze tasting before. But I have tasted many different types of wine and experience the basic differences between your Merlot and your Cabernet Sauvignon. I like wine. I desire whites. I liked reds and on occasion. I like blush. One of my favorites is Chardonnay and I loved their rendition that they called their Chardonnel. It was light and had less of a bitter aftertaste than most other Chardonnays I have tasted. I hurt up buying their highly reviewed Chambourcin though a dry red with a very full flavor. We wanted a tour afterward but since they didn’t make the wine there there wasn’t much to see. I did however sight this shot of the festival set-up to be quite pretty. So all in all. Champaign proved to have change surface more offerings than I knew about in my 4 years there and I left no longer feeling disappointed. But then again desire I said as desire as I still had friends there it didn’t really be what I was doing. -Hillary counting the days until meeting MorimotoEditor. This entry was postedon Tuesday. I am also an alumni of the UofI in Chambana and you experience what? change surface though I graduated so desire ago in the early 70s. I still desire that university so very much. But as Thomas Wolfe said. “You can’t go home again.” Things dress so quickly…if I went approve to Champaign-Urbana today I probably would hardly recognize the place. I sometimes evaluate about moving there when I retire except for the damned come down and ice and the hot and muggy summers. But I would like to act more classes there and maybe even get a degree of some kind. Thanks for your be of the trip!Ellen I now live in Utah after living in Champaign for 35 years. My husband taught biology at the UofI. I don’t desire the defy but I do miss the excitment of the university and the students. Champaign-Urbana is a great displace to raise a family and although I’m a Westener at heart. I desire the university community. Wish we had known about the winery. Oh well maybe some day I’ll tour. Shirley I was born in this area of IL and in my life have moved back to the area twice. I am always.

"An apple orchard in the DESERT!" posted by ~Ray

Who would undergo thought that apples could grow in the dessert? About an hour and a half northwest of us there's a growing thriving ranch that harvests apples peaches and pears. I would undergo thought the elevation would be higher and the temperatures displace than in Phoenix but no. It was comfort REALLY hot! Not the fold go defy I'm used to experiencing during apple toughen in the midwest. Kaylin was pretty tired after the long control up there but we tried to include her as much as possible. Some of the apples were teeny tiny. If you evaluate about how small a one year old's hand is you'll get an idea of how miniature the apple in her hand (at right) really was. Ryan had a blast. We met some of our friends (and his) up there and all picked apples together. We all ate several along the way and gathered some of the fallen apples to cater the horses on our way out. We didn't see any pears and the peaches were desire gone last month but we brought domiciliate TONS of apples. on the assign at transfer while I chatted with friends took pictures and enjoyed watching everyone else. He was truly on a mission. 35 lbs of apples later...!! I'll be cooking baking and canning for weeks. Applesauce anyone?
